Hey kids! Apparently some unknown species of large
squid was caught on some sort of underwater camera
in the Gulf of Mexico within the past year. Although the
news link on Yahoo was just posted today, the news
article itself is dated from March 2, 2005. Go figure.

Anyhoo, it's still an interesting article. And, in fact, there's
even a link to a (very) brief video of it.

The website is:

http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/ap_050302_squid_vid.html

Apologies if this has been discussed before--I only infrequently
browse this website.

Incidentally, I saw a small squid washed up on shore two days
ago in Ocean City, Maryland (USA). It's mantle had been
mostly eaten(?), but it was still my first encounter with a
"wild squid," heh heh. It was only about six inches in length.

Later!

Vince

Thanks very much for the link, Mournblade. The film actually dates from August 10th last year. We have had this before, you may like to have a look at this thread.

Steve has concluded that the squid is definitely not Mastigoteuthis as was suggested in the initial Ocean Explorer report and is probably a gonatid squid.

Thanks!

I think these are the armhook squids, Chrono. Check this out for more information:
