View Full Version : ID?
incysor May 11th, 2005, 12:52pm I found this guy at one of the LFS, and didn't feel like waiting another 2-3 months until my fishsupply order might get filled.
Anyone have an idea what species 'Houdini' might be?
He earned his name by crawling out of the acclimation pitcher to go exploring across the hardwood floors. :hmm:
I took a couple quick shots of him in a shallow tupperware bowl to see if anyone would recognize what type of octo he is.

Colin May 11th, 2005, 01:22pm Looks like a lovely young briareus :)
Nice catch, but they really do try their best to escape! watch those lids...
take it you're in the States? (acclimation pitcher)

Yep. I just adjusted my profile. I'm in Texas.
Thanks for the ID. Now I can do a bit more research.
The tank is fairly well octo proofed from when we had our bimac squishy. We lost him, (no eggs), last year, and wanted to replace him immediately, but knew a move was in our future so we decided to wait until we did that and got everything upgraded and settled back in before ordering another one. By the time we did that octopets had their snafu, and everyone is backordered 4-6 months it appears. I figured I'd go ahead with this guy since it's been nearly six weeks since I tried to order a bi-mac and was told 4-6 weeks, and just saw that people are still being told 4-6 weeks. Hopefully when we inevitably lose this guy everyone will be back up and running and I can get another bimac.
ceph May 11th, 2005, 04:26pm Long legs and aqua color do look like an O. briarieus (Caribbean reef Octopus). However, the "green eye brows" are not something I've seen before although I've mostly worked with hatchlings and adults of this species, not juveniles. O. briarieus has a sister species on the other side of the Panama Canal - any idea where he/she is from?
In any case, O. briarieus are quite the escape artists; you are not the first to name one Houdini.

Nancy May 11th, 2005, 04:45pm Welcome back! What a lovely young octopus! Such beautiful colors.
I'll add Houdini to our list of Tonmo octos and assume for now that he or she is a briareus.
Looking forward to more pics of Houdini in the tank.

I was being lazy this morning and thought maybe someone would recognize it on sight. After Colin ID'd it I looked it up on cephbase, and there are quite a few in the briareus image library that look pretty similar.

I didn't figure I was being particularly original naming it houdini, but I figured if I named it after any of these guys I'd have to explain it over and over and over.

I've got no idea where it's from. The owner of the shop I got it from wasn't in, and his wife couldn't tell me where it was ordered from.
What's the name of sister species of o. briareus?
B
corw314 May 12th, 2005, 06:38am He's really beautiful! Best of luck with him!!!! I love the first shot. You can see he already has plans for another escape!!!

incysor May 12th, 2005, 01:29pm Well, we didn't see him all last night. He found a good hole to hide in for sure.
I caught him with the tanks dark this morning though. And took several pics. Only one really came out. Here's the orig, resized, and the crop from the orig.

Carol
erich orser May 13th, 2005, 08:28am That is a stunning octopus. Absolutely gorgeous.
Nancy May 13th, 2005, 12:34pm If it is a briareus, it will be nocturnal - although I have seen some that have adjusted to being out during the day.
Nancy
incysor May 13th, 2005, 02:06pm No new pics. I looked around in the tank about 4am this morning and managed to see a leg in a hole in one of the rocks in the center of the tank, but haven't seen him out since yesterday morning early when I took the last pic.

The camera is an Olympus C-5050 zoom.
It's about 2yrs old. It's been a fantastic learning camera, as it's got more features than most point-and-shoot cameras. When I manage to get the money together to get a dSLR, I'll have a much better understanding of what things are than I had before.
No real updates. I couldn't find the little guy at all yesterday evening. I got up about 4am and managed to see a leg in one of the rocks near the center of the tank, but that was it. It's about what I expected.
When I got my first bimac, I didn't see the little one for nearly 3wks after I put it in the tank.

Nancy May 13th, 2005, 05:00pm You might try looking at night using a flashlight with a red lens.
I agree with Carol, the pics are good!

incysor May 13th, 2005, 05:18pm Thanks. I'll post more as I get them.

incysor May 18th, 2005, 03:57pm I found the octo dead in the tank yesterday morning.
I'd just checked my water the day before, and all the params were at 0. Just to double check I took a sample to one of the LFS I trust and had them test it. They said there was a very small amount of ammonia, but no nitrates, nitrites, or phosphates. My tank runs between 74 and 76 degrees.
It didn't seem large enough to be fully grown. Maybe it was just shipping stress?
B
Colin May 18th, 2005, 04:19pm sorry to read the bad news! :(
I think that it may be worth checking for copper in this case...
I havnt lost an octo to shipping stress after more than a few days of receiving it and in both cases they didnt eat.
They are just so sensitive sometimes
again sorry about the octo
regards
colin
corw314 May 18th, 2005, 08:34pm I'm sorry to hear! Hope you will try again at some point. It is deffinately worth the effort!

I'm very sorry to hear. That was an incredible octopus you had. Amazing pictures -- thank you for sharing them. I'm with Carol -- hang in there!
Squidman May 18th, 2005, 10:24pm oi. Seems only fitting that such a wonderful animal is so fragile, and has such a short life.

I really appreciated your photos..
So it goes..
take it easy,

incysor Jun 22nd, 2005, 05:21pm I found this little guy at one of the LFS on Monday night.
He acclimated well and pounced on a crab almost immediately. You can see it holding the shell in the last pic. So far it's stayed in the open most of the time. It's been out every morning, and during the evenings with the lights on it's been hanging out on the cleaning magnet, and the few places on the rock where I don't have anemones. I'm going to have to do some serious maintenance this weekend and remove all the aiptasia, and tulip anemones so that he can move around easier as he gets bigger.

Nancy Jun 22nd, 2005, 08:50pm Nice little octopus!
Have a look at the Bimac Care Sheet and compare the ring - is it an unbroken chain like the bimac in the photo? If so, you probably have a bimac.

Nancy
incysor Jun 22nd, 2005, 11:28pm It's definitely a bimac, I just don't know which species.
My first octo was a bimac as well. They're great pets.
B
Nancy Jun 23rd, 2005, 11:31am When we use the term bimac, we are referring to a species:
O.bimaculoides. So that's what you have!
Do you have a name for it yet, so I can enter you in our TONMO list of octopuses?
Nancy
chrono_war01 Jun 23rd, 2005, 12:27pm What's the name of your new pet? We can't just call it "The Bimac" or "It" forever, can we?

Well since there's o. bimaculoides, and o. bimaculatus, that's what I meant when I said I don't know which species it is.
The first one I had I ordered from fishsupply.com, so I knew it was o. bimaculoides. Since this one is wild-caught, it's less clear. Unfortunately the LFS I got them from is a very weirdly run mom and pop shop where the 3 sons and the parents often don't know who orders what, so they couldn't tell me where they'd gotten this guy from.
I've got a rule about not naming the critters until they've been in the tank for at least 3wks.
The last one got named early cause of it's antics while trying to acclimate him. I'll be making a list of names during the next few weeks and let my wife pick out the one she likes.

Octomush Jun 23rd, 2005, 07:39pm Just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss and... Buetiful or lovely would be an understatement in describing this majestic creature! It's AWESOME IT'S GORGEOUS!!! IT'S THE MOST BUETIFUL OCTO I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!! That will be all...
