View Full Version : Writing Posts:warning, this is a rant...
cthulhu77 Apr 26th, 2005, 08:11pm Ok...I think I have had enough of reading posts that come off like they were written by a kindergardener...please, I am begging you, use punctuation and spell at least somewhat correctly...all of us make mistakes from time to time while typing, but this "tel me wat i cn du 2 kep a bemac n a 10 gln tank" is really getting to be too much.
Dr. O'Shea commented once that it seemed that the post by a member had been written on his cellphone...beep beep...for a while it is ok...but trying to struggle through post after post of the same verbage is killing me.
Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings...but enough is enough.

clownfish Apr 26th, 2005, 08:47pm sorry Im just realy bad at spelling I try but realy I lack in grammer skills  I usualy try not to take grammer short cuts
cthulhu77 Apr 26th, 2005, 09:21pm I am not singling anyone out...especially you, Clownfish !!!! All of the people who post just need to remember that to get an answer, the question must be framed correctly!
greg
Melissa Apr 26th, 2005, 09:24pm Greg's got a point, it is easier for some of us to read old fashioned sentences with all the vowels. It's been a while since Steve or TTF put on the grammar teacher's cap - we were due!
Clownfish, don't go away discouraged, it's not only you.
Melissa
chrono_war01 Apr 27th, 2005, 08:18am Yep.
joel_ang Apr 28th, 2005, 07:34am I'd have to agree with you, there are too many posts with internet slang and it makes it rather hard to read and understand. I'm no innocent either...
chrono_war01 Apr 28th, 2005, 07:40am Hell, everyone goofs up with grammer sometimes...It's just that some poeple know that what he/she wrote has tons of spelling and grammer mistakes and doesn't bother...
clownfish Apr 28th, 2005, 08:13pm ya I now
Fujisawas Sake Apr 29th, 2005, 05:08am How about keeping on the thread topics while we're at it?
I understand. I swear I almost slapped the first person who wrote at me using Haxor out of spite, like I wouldn't figure that out. I can read about six or seven languages - substituing numbers for letters can't fool me.
Well, I think we could all be arrested by the grammar police at times. I think, however, that you do make a good point.

Haha i agree.
monty May 13th, 2005, 06:52pm I noticed I had used "their" for "there" in a post yesterday.
I am ashamed (and someone quoted it, so editing it can't erase my crime)...
:cthulhu: forgive me...
cthulhu77 May 13th, 2005, 08:30pm 2nd round is on you at Tonmocon, then...
Jean May 14th, 2005, 11:52pm My main problems are that while my brain can spell and do grammer, my fingers can't PLUS the connections between the two are routed via outer siberia so someties there's a lag between the thought, the writing, spotting the problem and attempting to corect it......sea????

PS I'm just a iggerant, socially maladapted marine biology student........what's Haxor????????
erich orser May 15th, 2005, 12:12am I'm with Jean on this (not counting the marine biology student part - for which my dear mother will always hang her head in shame ). Also, the keyboard on my Mac seems to want to input multiple letters when I'm only touching it once. For instance, I'll hiit the "t" once and then get "tttt". Hey, it just happened again with "hit" in the last sentence!
PurpleTentacle May 15th, 2005, 12:16am PS I'm just a iggerant, socially maladapted marine biology student........what's Haxor????????
I'm not sure, but it's probably a dialect of leet, aka l33t. A bunch of hackers and other computer geeks have sort of developed their own language where they susbtitute non-alphabetic characters and use other abreviations in English words. For instance, at Defcon last year (an annual hacker convention that takes place in Las Vegas) the team that won the capture the flag contest called themselves "sk33l of r00t" or "School of Root". Incidently, these happen to be a group of fella's at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey.
The name "leet" supposedly comes from the word "elite", it's a sort of pride kind of deal with them. But yeah, it's an annoying "language". Although, id10t$ makes a great temporary password.
Oh yeah, here's the wiki link:

cthulhu77 May 15th, 2005, 10:06am I am sure she is rolling over quite well in her grave...
Jean May 15th, 2005, 06:49pm Ok then I could spell things badly and then call it a new language! errrrm maybe squiddish?
I only ask this cos on the draft of a paper I'm writing I spelled (sigh...... of course I mean spelt) my name wrong on the title page  and it only has 4 letters  again
J
TPOTH May 15th, 2005, 08:52pm The name "leet"
Surely you mean "l33t"
But yeah, it's an annoying "language". Although, id10t$ makes a great temporary password.
Sure does. anyhow l33t languague is old, a relic of ye olden days of telnet and other text-based interfaces (hardly a secret code... as any half-brain nitwit can decipher it... but i suppose that's the point, to make the half-brained feel "elite"). Seems normal it pops up so much in mobile phone lingo as people who weren't around the net the first time think they found something rather cool. They way technology is going, it's likely that all that will remain of txt-language will be a few acronyms (roflmao) and a handful of words (that might make it to the dictionnary if they prove resilient enough)... All in all, a bit a fun or, if taken seriously (i.e. 1 tlk nly txt, l33t m8!!1!) just a sign of a sad life
TPOTH
Jean May 15th, 2005, 08:58pm TPOTH that just put my brain cell into a spasm...........now my head hurts   (sorry just being pathetic...it's lunchtime and we're out of :coffee: )

pipsquek May 15th, 2005, 10:30pm Don't you think it's a litte bit generational??? Seriously, when you are given a toy cell phone before your given a bike, and you finish 30 different video games before you can speak 20 full sentences, it has to have an effect.
Kids are being raised with the idea that seconds are not to be wasted on trivial things, such as being polite, much less taking the time to learn how to type properly and quickly enough to finish a whole sentence. But it starts with the parents and the influences they are surrounded by. One out of a hundred customers that walks through my door to place an order from me expects me to help them while they are on the phone with their dentist, mother, cousin-they-haven't-seen-in-ten-years, plumber, lawyer, whatever. They have to be doing two things at once, at least, and that means that nothing ever gets your full attention, including the HUMAN BEING standing in front of them making their food. (Since it's much too temping to do something horrible to these folks' sandwiches and meats, I just ignore them now...But sometimes    )
Before I get completely off-topic myself.....(Is there some way to embed and cross-reference these things so that a discussion that starts to lead to far off topic can be spouted on a new branch without cutting it from the tree that it grew from????)
I do have to say though, that while I agree that is it is born out of laziness, some of it is rather clever, and language is as much an evolutionary process as everything else. I think really that it is a matter of time and place, and since rather serious and specific information is being discussed on this site (mostly ), a specific set of language skills should be used by all to convey the best possible infomation for the sake of the animals we are so fascinated with as to have them in our homes.

Sure do, I've lost count of the number of kids who want to see spongebob in the aquarium tanks! and who arrive with their cellphones and carry on texting through the lab session (or whatever) which I think is just down right rude!

Oh, sure, abbreviate the rest but add an extra "n" to "whining."
You're a sly one.

Phil Sep 27th, 2005, 09:44pm Yo, ths pics ov arke2this r gr8 n cool. Wkd.
Nancy Sep 27th, 2005, 09:55pm Well think of it this way, Octowanabee,
the time you save in writing like that is made up in the extra time it takes the rest of us to figure out what you're saying
Nancy
chrono_war01 Sep 27th, 2005, 10:05pm the real problems at hand and ppls diein octos.... :)
 I have no idea what you are talking about.
Is it "dining on octos, or dying octos?"
Tintenfisch Sep 27th, 2005, 10:10pm Excellent point, Nancy.
If you would like the experienced ceph-keepers on this site, like Colin and Nancy, to take the time to read your posts, offer their advice and answer your questions (on their own time, which I'm sure is full of other demands) then you might have the courtesy and respect for them to take the time to write in coherent English (so they don't have to spend extra time trying to decipher 'wut u r sayin').
:twocents:
Jean Sep 27th, 2005, 10:15pm I agree with Nancy and TTF, I have to spend enough time trying to decifer the scientific techno speak in the papers I HAVE to read to really want to translate phone text speak!
J
um... Sep 27th, 2005, 10:39pm Octowanabee, you're joking, aren't you?
chrono_war01 Sep 27th, 2005, 10:44pm I hope he is...
cthulhu77 Sep 27th, 2005, 11:11pm octowannabe, I do hope you notice that I rarely, if ever, reply to posts worded the way that you write.
I feel that if you can not do me the simple courtesy of writing in a normal fashion, than I do not owe you a response.

Aye, Ye DO realize people are not obligated to answer ye, right?
CapnNemo Sep 28th, 2005, 03:23am My Secretary types all my posts, I just dictate them.
tonmo Sep 28th, 2005, 06:23am Nancy, TTF, Cthulhu and others here have it right -- if you don't have enough respect for us to spell out your words properly (and we now have a spell-check feature to assist), don't expect to get replies from our resident experts. Obviously some misfires are fine, but "u no wut im sayen" isn't worth responding to.
sorseress Sep 28th, 2005, 02:43pm I agree wholeheartedly with everyone on this, and I am an absolutely wretched speller. When in doubt, look it up. I can't access the spell check on Tonmo because I have Firefox, but I look things up in an online dictionary. My typing skills leave a lot to be desired too, and I frequently miss things when I proof read, or get in too much of a hurry and don't proof read at all. The point is, I try to respect the reader and try not to let my lousy spelling and typing get posted without correction very often.

chrono_war01 Sep 28th, 2005, 08:27pm Once again, it shows why letters and numbers don't mix in the same word and I had absolutly no idea what you guys (and gals) are saying for the last few posts.
tonmo Sep 28th, 2005, 08:50pm The last one was something to the effect of, "Fear my mad elite skills, or I will own your buttocks."
