Hi Folks... this ought to do for now... note that usernames are *not* integrated -- chat at your own risk!

Type "/nick <your username>" to establish your username. e.g.:

/nick superfoot

Chat Now! (http://www.tonmo.com/cgi-sys/mchat.cgi?channel=tonmo.com)

:talker:

First Wednesdays of the month again? 9pm ET?

Squidman
Apr 23rd, 2005, 12:29pm
I tried to type "/nick Squidman," but I found that just "Squidman" works fine.

Am I not doing something right?

tonmo
Apr 23rd, 2005, 12:48pm
no, that's good -- i'm just saying that it doesn't happen automatically, which is what I'd prefer to offer -- i.e., access to chat should be based on your TONMO.com login credentials. Some day soon!

Note that if you don't type /nick username, you can still chat, but your identity will be "unknown".

Well, I sat there yelling for quite some time ... alas, nobody yelled back; I was stuck in some channel all by my lonesome (first time I've been able to chat in years, and nobody was there)

Well, I managed to talk to TONMO for a few minutes, so it does work with 2 people... I had some weirdness where I left "ghost logins" when I just closed the window instead of using the logout button or "quit," but when I quit my browser (and the associated java_vm) it closed those connections. Tony says his doesn't do this, so it may be something about my OS or some such (debian pure64/amd64 linux + firefox + blackdown/sun java j2re1.4.2). Shrug.

Are you gearing up for TONMOcon Tony??? So that all the people who can't make it can have a chat/Q&A session with speakers?? Maybe we can bring a laptop to the bar and have chatroom toasts!
  :wine: :glass:
I love it.

I think it's still a 12 hour difference, although we just put our clocks an hour ahead. So 9 pm in New York is probably 9 am the next morning in Hong Kong.

When I need to know for sure, I look at the World Clock website.

It seems to work for me, still, but no one else is on... what's the failure?

Tintenfisch
May 4th, 2005, 12:49am
I get a blank grey screen for about 20 seconds (although the status bar says 'Applet initialized' if you mouse over), then a black screen that says in red: Connection to [...] failed! MELANGE debug: java.net.NoRouteToHostException: Operation Timed Out

... and that's it. :hmm:

Are you behind a firewall? When I spy on my chat session, it tries to get to the same host for the chat that it goes to for normal TONMO stuff:

65.98.87.107:www is the web connection
65.98.87.107:6666 is the chat

so, it'd be weird to get a "no route to host" for chat but not posting to tonmo. So, my guess is that something like a firewall is blocking port 6666 between you and tonmo.com, but it's also possible something's funny with your java setup, I guess.

you might try "telnet www.tonmo.com 6666" to see if that works (I forget if recent windows versions include a telnet client-- some browsers let you enter "telnet://www.tonmo.com:6666" but mine doesn't seem to let me.

Anyway, if it works, it'll look something like this:
telnet tonmo.com 6666
Trying 65.98.87.107...
Connected to tonmo.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+++Online
>> Melange Chat Server (Version 1.10), Apr-25-1999

Welcome ! (Type /HELP for a list of commands)

and you can just type /quit to get out.

If you get "no route to host" with telnet, it's probably a firewall type issue; if you get to the chat server message, it's probably a problem with the java client.

It looks like if the telnet works, you can actually use that to access the chat, although it's probably a bit klunky compared to the java client...

(since I don't know what OS you use, the telnet stuff is a bit vague... I think it should be available on mac or windows from the "console"-- use start->run cmd or start MS-DOS prompt on windows or start a terminal on MacOS to get to where you can type "telnet tonmo.com 6666")

hope this helps...

Thanks for the advice, Monty. Good plan... guess it must be a firewall issue though. It does say 'Connecting to www.tonmo.com... ' and then the window shuts itself down. I guess it's not too surprising; I doubt the university would be encouraging the use of chat programs on its machines. Even if it's vaguely on-topic for my thesis! It used to work, though... wonder what's changed.

I fear we've lost critical mass in chat-land. Sorry we couldn't get the Kiwi crowd on-line... maybe next time...

Maybe the university IT folks could tell you about the firewall situation, or insert an exception for tonmo.com:6666 or some such. I'll shut down my not-that-helpful relay now, I guess.

Hello All,

I must admit, I find the new chat format to be a bit of a puzzle, but hopefully I'll find a comfort level with it.

Sorry I missed the discussion of the Ta-154.

Lady T, you can always add on to any discussion...heck, I don't know much about the 154 either (but Phil, Clem, and Pakok certainly have some strong feelings...)

You're not using an OS X 10.3.9 machine are you? It sort of sounding like this is a local JRE issue and I know that the 10.3.9 update to Panther broke all kinds of stuff, one of the biggest of which was Java.

When we were debugging, she was using a windows (win2k, I think) machine. It seemed pretty clear it was a network problem rather than being local to a particular machine, although I don't know that there were any non-windows machines tried...

Eric, why not say that you will be in the chatroom at a specific time and date that are good for you and that you'd love to chat with others who could make it then, too? Just be sure to note the time zone so we can all calculate whether it's feasible for us, too.
