View Full Version : Old Chat [locked]
tonmo Apr 23rd, 2005, 06:19am Hi Folks... this ought to do for now... note that usernames are *not* integrated -- chat at your own risk!
Type "/nick <your username>" to establish your username. e.g.:
/nick superfoot
Chat Now! (http://www.tonmo.com/cgi-sys/mchat.cgi?channel=tonmo.com)
:talker:
First Wednesdays of the month again? 9pm ET?
Squidman Apr 23rd, 2005, 12:29pm I tried to type "/nick Squidman," but I found that just "Squidman" works fine.
Am I not doing something right?
tonmo Apr 23rd, 2005, 12:48pm no, that's good -- i'm just saying that it doesn't happen automatically, which is what I'd prefer to offer -- i.e., access to chat should be based on your TONMO.com login credentials. Some day soon!
Note that if you don't type /nick username, you can still chat, but your identity will be "unknown".
Steve O'Shea Apr 23rd, 2005, 04:00pm Well, I sat there yelling for quite some time ... alas, nobody yelled back; I was stuck in some channel all by my lonesome (first time I've been able to chat in years, and nobody was there)
joel_ang Apr 23rd, 2005, 09:22pm Thanks for getting the chat back up and running  ! However even after i enter my username i'm still "unknown"
WhiteKiboko Apr 23rd, 2005, 10:44pm it seemed to work fine for me, except of course the lack of conversation..... not that its ever stopped me before but.....

Well, I managed to talk to TONMO for a few minutes, so it does work with 2 people... I had some weirdness where I left "ghost logins" when I just closed the window instead of using the logout button or "quit," but when I quit my browser (and the associated java_vm) it closed those connections. Tony says his doesn't do this, so it may be something about my OS or some such (debian pure64/amd64 linux + firefox + blackdown/sun java j2re1.4.2). Shrug.
chrono_war01 Apr 24th, 2005, 01:12am Nice, but where's the poeple?
pipsquek Apr 24th, 2005, 02:25am Are you gearing up for TONMOcon Tony??? So that all the people who can't make it can have a chat/Q&A session with speakers?? Maybe we can bring a laptop to the bar and have chatroom toasts!
  :wine: :glass:
I love it.
joel_ang Apr 24th, 2005, 07:08am Sorry for the stupid question, should have read Tony's post lol.

Saved me from typing in...oh wait, I'm typing...
The first Wednesday of every month...that will be the 4th of May...at 9 pm eastern standard time...
Mark your calendars appropriately !!!
Squidman Apr 24th, 2005, 07:03pm I'll be there.
WhiteKiboko Apr 25th, 2005, 09:50am that will be the 4th of May...at 9 pm eastern standard time...

chrono_war01 Apr 25th, 2005, 10:20am hm....wonder what time will that be at Hong Kong....
Melissa Apr 25th, 2005, 11:41am I think it's still a 12 hour difference, although we just put our clocks an hour ahead. So 9 pm in New York is probably 9 am the next morning in Hong Kong.
When I need to know for sure, I look at the World Clock website.

Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 12:19am Hmm, I can't get in. This doesn't bode well for tomorrow. :hmm:
monty May 4th, 2005, 12:25am Hmm, I can't get in. This doesn't bode well for tomorrow. :hmm:
It seems to work for me, still, but no one else is on... what's the failure?
Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 12:49am I get a blank grey screen for about 20 seconds (although the status bar says 'Applet initialized' if you mouse over), then a black screen that says in red: Connection to [...] failed! MELANGE debug: java.net.NoRouteToHostException: Operation Timed Out
... and that's it. :hmm:
monty May 4th, 2005, 01:53am I get a blank grey screen for about 20 seconds (although the status bar says 'Applet initialized' if you mouse over), then a black screen that says in red: Connection to [...] failed! MELANGE debug: java.net.NoRouteToHostException: Operation Timed Out
... and that's it. :hmm:
Are you behind a firewall? When I spy on my chat session, it tries to get to the same host for the chat that it goes to for normal TONMO stuff:
65.98.87.107:www is the web connection
65.98.87.107:6666 is the chat
so, it'd be weird to get a "no route to host" for chat but not posting to tonmo. So, my guess is that something like a firewall is blocking port 6666 between you and tonmo.com, but it's also possible something's funny with your java setup, I guess.
you might try "telnet www.tonmo.com 6666" to see if that works (I forget if recent windows versions include a telnet client-- some browsers let you enter "telnet://www.tonmo.com:6666" but mine doesn't seem to let me.
Anyway, if it works, it'll look something like this:
telnet tonmo.com 6666
Trying 65.98.87.107...
Connected to tonmo.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

>> Melange Chat Server (Version 1.10), Apr-25-1999
Welcome ! (Type /HELP for a list of commands)
and you can just type /quit to get out.
If you get "no route to host" with telnet, it's probably a firewall type issue; if you get to the chat server message, it's probably a problem with the java client.
It looks like if the telnet works, you can actually use that to access the chat, although it's probably a bit klunky compared to the java client...
(since I don't know what OS you use, the telnet stuff is a bit vague... I think it should be available on mac or windows from the "console"-- use start->run cmd or start MS-DOS prompt on windows or start a terminal on MacOS to get to where you can type "telnet tonmo.com 6666")
hope this helps...
Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 05:38pm Thanks for the advice, Monty. Good plan... guess it must be a firewall issue though. It does say 'Connecting to www.tonmo.com... ' and then the window shuts itself down. I guess it's not too surprising; I doubt the university would be encouraging the use of chat programs on its machines. Even if it's vaguely on-topic for my thesis! It used to work, though... wonder what's changed.
monty May 4th, 2005, 09:01pm I think it's 9pm ET (or one minute shy...) chat works for me, but I couldn't help Kat get connected...
newb and I seem to be online (but I'm not sure who that is...)
talk to y'all soon?

Unfortunately still a no go on my end (and i believe for Lady TTF too)
All because of a %$%@#$ firewall

Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 09:37pm Yeah, with a little help from Monty I'm trying to figure out a way to get in - I'll let you know if we have any luck!
:hmm:
cthulhu77 May 4th, 2005, 10:08pm We are Yapping now!!!!
Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 10:29pm We're trying.
um... May 4th, 2005, 10:39pm
cthulhu77 May 4th, 2005, 10:44pm Dangit...wish you were there!!!! Is it still popping up errors?
Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 10:51pm Yes. The firewall never gave me any trouble with the old chat, but there's something about this one it doesn't like...
cthulhu77 May 4th, 2005, 10:54pm  Dangit
cthulhu77 May 4th, 2005, 11:05pm Right now, we are discussing the merits of chaps and the beautious wonder of the tA-154 Moskito...
Tintenfisch May 4th, 2005, 11:09pm 'fraid I wouldn't be able to contribute much to that anyway.
monty May 4th, 2005, 11:42pm I fear we've lost critical mass in chat-land. Sorry we couldn't get the Kiwi crowd on-line... maybe next time...
Maybe the university IT folks could tell you about the firewall situation, or insert an exception for tonmo.com:6666 or some such. I'll shut down my not-that-helpful relay now, I guess.
Clem May 4th, 2005, 11:53pm Hello All,
I must admit, I find the new chat format to be a bit of a puzzle, but hopefully I'll find a comfort level with it.
Sorry I missed the discussion of the Ta-154.
Cheers,
Clem
cthulhu77 May 5th, 2005, 09:25am Yep, it is going to take some working out of the bugs...only four of us on last night...puzzling after all the hype!
Lady T, you can always add on to any discussion...heck, I don't know much about the 154 either (but Phil, Clem, and Pakok certainly have some strong feelings...)

tonmo May 5th, 2005, 08:28pm ....back to the drawing board... I'll step up search for permanent solution.
PurpleTentacle Jun 8th, 2005, 03:32pm I get a blank grey screen for about 20 seconds (although the status bar says 'Applet initialized' if you mouse over), then a black screen that says in red: Connection to [...] failed! MELANGE debug: java.net.NoRouteToHostException: Operation Timed Out

You're not using an OS X 10.3.9 machine are you? It sort of sounding like this is a local JRE issue and I know that the 10.3.9 update to Panther broke all kinds of stuff, one of the biggest of which was Java.

When we were debugging, she was using a windows (win2k, I think) machine. It seemed pretty clear it was a network problem rather than being local to a particular machine, although I don't know that there were any non-windows machines tried...
Tintenfisch Jun 8th, 2005, 09:36pm Sadly, I don't have any access to non-Windows machines. Stuck with my Uni-issue Windows 2000, I'm afraid. Sigh.
Cephkid Jun 16th, 2005, 06:05pm ...too...many...postss...
Yay, new chat! seeya there next time its on. (Right now I'm go gonna curl up into a fetal position and suck my thumb  )

chrono_war01 Sep 7th, 2005, 08:05pm I seem to have totally forgotten this chat thing, although now that you say it, I might go in a chat for 30 seconds before the school teachers find me not doing homework.
tonmo Sep 7th, 2005, 09:13pm hmmm, my connection to chat failed. When the Webmaster can't connect to chat, it's time to get a new chat room! :-/
Cephkid Sep 7th, 2005, 09:16pm try again. I got on no trouble.
Melissa Sep 7th, 2005, 09:23pm I had no trouble either. But I was tardy and everyone had already left.

chrono_war01 Sep 8th, 2005, 04:55am dam school, they banned tonmo.com's chat system!
Cephkid Sep 8th, 2005, 08:08pm Okay, based on the small amount of people who got on, I would like to schedule a "semi-official" chat tommorow, as friday will be (SHOULD be), more accessible. Anyone agree?
chrono_war01 Sep 8th, 2005, 10:55pm Okay, becuase of the fricking time zones, I can't attend it.
Melissa Sep 9th, 2005, 08:14am Okay, becuase of the fricking time zones, I can't attend it.
Eric, why not say that you will be in the chatroom at a specific time and date that are good for you and that you'd love to chat with others who could make it then, too? Just be sure to note the time zone so we can all calculate whether it's feasible for us, too.
Melissa
