View Full Version : About Monterey... (split from the initial Poll thread)
chrono_war01 Apr 3rd, 2005, 06:39am Can anyone give me info on where Monterey? East or West Coast? Which state? Anyone willing to tell me which hotel you guys will be staying? since I want to be in close contact with you guys in case I get lost in a real big city.
Oh, and any more attractions in Monterey? I wouldn't ming if anyone can arrange a tour of the local universities or research labs.

erich orser Apr 3rd, 2005, 07:43am Chrono,
Monterey is on the West Coast, about two hours' drive from San Francisco, about five-and-a-half hours' North of Los Angeles. There is a shuttle service from San Francisco International Airport straight into downtown Monterey. In terms of size, Monterey is more of a medium-sized town than a big city, kind of like Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz if I recall. Of course, that will mean little to you, but it's a nice place. Very pretty. Hope you can make it!
tonmo Apr 3rd, 2005, 07:45am I'm sure at least some of us should be able to meet up at the airport and ride the shuttle together, assuming arrivals aren't too far apart... as Melissa noted, logistics to come...
corw314 Apr 3rd, 2005, 07:48am What day is everyone coming in???? I'm looking at the 4th.
tonmo Apr 3rd, 2005, 08:01am What day is everyone coming in???? I'm looking at the 4th.
At present, I'm thinking of coming in on 8/5 (the Friday), and leaving 8/7 (the Sunday), but that could change depending on how the agenda shapes up.

There are three different labs here that you might be able to visit.
Moss Landing Marine Labratories http://www.mlml.calstate.edu/
I applied for a cooks job on thier RV Point Sur. Would've had it too, if I hadn't spewed my guts out the whole second day. Cool place though, I'll see what I can russle up for a tour.
Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute www.mbari.org I met one of the postdocs a few weeks ago, and I'm working on that one already.
Hopkins Marine Lab http://www-marine.stanford.edu/ Don't know anyone there, not that I know of anyway. Although I suspect there are TONMO members that have something to do with the place.
chrono_war01 Apr 10th, 2005, 05:19am Thanks for all the info, by the way, anyone planning to go there before TONMOcon and stay there after it has ended? I mean why stay there only for a few days when you use so much money on transportation? I staying there at least for a week since it takes about 4000-5000HKD
chrono_war01 Apr 10th, 2005, 05:26am ARGH!!!!!!!!!
Priceline can't offer me anything since I'm below 16. Dam.
erich orser Apr 10th, 2005, 10:56am We'll be putting up some cheaper lodgings in Monterey over the next week, either here or on the Monterey: FAQs thread.

i personally like the carmel hill lodge over the rest or maybe the embassy suites.
a rabid squid Apr 18th, 2005, 07:53pm the coolest place as far as ceph labs go is hopkins marine lab. professor Gilly is really cool and its right next to the aquarium.
Melissa Apr 18th, 2005, 09:50pm Thanks for all this info! It's great to have some local hands to offer advice. I hope Dr. Gilly realizes how many fans he will have to entertain!
Melissa
chrono_war01 Apr 19th, 2005, 09:37am thanks a bunch, rabid squid.
I'm currently looking for a place that's safe, has a bed with no fleas or ticks on it, a TV and a clean bathroom. Wonder where anyone is looking for what I'm looking for.
chrono_war01 May 5th, 2005, 10:11am Finally, a breakthrough! My mom promised to fund my first 'adventure'!
erich orser May 5th, 2005, 11:16pm Give your Mom a big hug for all of us! Congratulations!
chrono_war01 May 6th, 2005, 07:23am Mom replies,' You're welcome.'
Rona May 7th, 2005, 01:49am Whoa! Is this Convention really going to happen!??????????? Count me in!!!!!! I have a octo-wagon, if anyone wants to come to LA first, I will carpool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cephalopods or Bust! BTW, there is a really great Youth Hostile 2 blocks from the Aq, MBARI and the like [Cannery Row etc..] I am in school at the time of this so I can only go, Fri- Sun. if anyoe is interested. Hey! James, You in?
erich orser May 7th, 2005, 06:46am Hmmm, Rona... an octo-wagon, you say? We'll be driving North in our own vehicle, but I'm definitely curious. What, exactly, does an octo-wagon look like?
chrono_war01 May 7th, 2005, 12:47pm I've been wondering too!
Melissa May 7th, 2005, 01:28pm Yes, it is really going to happen! August 5,6,7. We'll tour MBARI on Friday afternoon, listen to very special guests on Saturday followed by food in Monterey, and visit the aquarium on Sunday. Monterey's Convention Center has been very helpful, the local high school has been super supportive and the folks at MBARI will show us their labs!
I'm waiting for a price quote on one last item so we can figure out the costs that will determine "ticket prices." After that, the only things to work out will be carpooling to Moss Landing and MBARI, and who wants to be part of the TONMO group entering the aquarium at 9:30 am on Sunday.
Melissa
Rona May 7th, 2005, 02:29pm It's a Mazda P5 wagon w/ a lot of octo and aquarium stickers on it....Silly ain't it?
Rona May 7th, 2005, 02:33pm Cool! Count me in. Can't wait...
:bluering:
erich orser May 7th, 2005, 04:03pm Let's see... Saturday night we're staying out late in Monterey... 9:30 AM Sunday morning versus the next tour slightly later on in the day... I doubt I'll be part of the 9:30 crew on Sunday, but people flying (or driving) back to their destinations that day will probably want to take advantage of the earlier aquarium visit. Anyone up for a champagne brunch somewhere?
Rona May 7th, 2005, 05:17pm There's actually a great little Diner on the corner of Wave St. and Ocean [Archie's American Diner 125 Ocean View Blvd # 103,Pacific Grove, CA] It's a favourite amoung us aquarium goers. [Can you tell I go there A LOT?!!!] :vampyro:
No champagne though...
chrono_war01 May 8th, 2005, 12:51pm I'm not allowed to *hic* have champagne although *hic*I did try some*hic*...tastes really funny...*hic*
