I am sure we are going to make this all as user friendly as possible...no exclusions of anyone!!!!! greg Jean Apr 3rd, 2005, 10:49pm ah yes but do the bars serve pan galactic gargle blasters???????? erich orser Apr 3rd, 2005, 11:04pm I believe they serve Slurm. "Slurm: It's Highly Addictive!" cthulhu77 Apr 3rd, 2005, 11:10pm I had my head knocked in by a brick wrapped in felt once...I think so, at least. WhiteKiboko Apr 3rd, 2005, 11:25pm I believe they serve Slurm. "Slurm: It's Highly Addictive!" What, no St Pauli's Exclusion Principle Girl? Infusoria Apr 4th, 2005, 01:41am What, no St Pauli's Exclusion Principle Girl? That used to be my favourate lager, you can't get it here anymore. WhiteKiboko Apr 4th, 2005, 02:13am I take it you were excluded..... Waiting for the inevitable...... Infusoria Apr 4th, 2005, 06:22am 'fraid so Infusoria Apr 4th, 2005, 06:23am Slurm, I've seen where that comes from... Infusoria Apr 4th, 2005, 06:31am I just couldn't help myself... This one's for the pedants. http://www.bustedtees.com/product.php?name=yourretarded cthulhu77 Apr 4th, 2005, 09:40am I gather that I would be in that group...oh well. St.P's girl is a wonderful thing... PurpleTentacle Apr 4th, 2005, 10:33am That reminds me of this story my boss told me about the last time he went to a bar in San Luis Obispo. He made the mistake of yelling to the bartender that he would like to have a "Pauli girl" which when spoken sounds an awful lot like "Poly girl." Every guy at the bar chimed in with "Yeah, I'll take one of those too!" along with a few comments a little more lewd in nature. PurpleTentacle Apr 4th, 2005, 10:36am Wish I could go to the bar event... Hey, if you get caught drinking, tell the cop that the liquor in your cup is called "Old Tennis Shoes" and you got it from some guy on Cannery Row named "Mack" WhiteKiboko Apr 4th, 2005, 04:12pm Wish I could go to the bar event... A lawyer at such a young age... thats impressive.... pipsquek Apr 5th, 2005, 01:06am That's one e in pipsquek, thank you very much..... cbarela Apr 5th, 2005, 01:33am What is on the agenda for "Ceph Art"? As a (sorta) regular contributor to the TONMO Galleries you've peaked my interest. What's the buzz?? -Chris cthulhu77 Apr 5th, 2005, 09:41am Erich and the rest of us are still bouncing ideas around...will post a thread on the issue soon ! glad you are interested! greg tonmo Apr 5th, 2005, 08:45pm That's one e in pipsquek, thank you very much..... Noted and corrected sir! cthulhu77 Apr 5th, 2005, 08:52pm Well, if we are going to get that picky, make sure Dr. SOS knows how to pronounce Cthulhu, also. Jeez...all that ND has ruined his eardrums! g tonmo Apr 5th, 2005, 08:59pm Note I updated the agenda (and also my avatar because Matt Jones has thrown me off!) The going idea is to go to the aquarium on Sunday to allow ample time there, instead of trying to shoe-horn the aquarium visit with the bulk of convention events into one day. So, instead, Saturday is shaping up to be "lecture day". We may need to look into a catered lunch type deal... PS: the avatar is my son's creation from pre-k; 4 popsicle sticks and a fuzz-ball with googly-eyes makes 1 kewl octopus... erich orser Apr 5th, 2005, 09:11pm Tony, Tell your son it's excellent work! Erich supernick Apr 5th, 2005, 11:34pm I have a membership to the aquarium so i could bring in someone free as a guest. aslo, the ceph ecxibit there is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1  erich orser Apr 5th, 2005, 11:53pm Supernick, Great news! Yes, currently the ceph exhibit is being refurbished. To my horror, it seems that they're moving the cuttlefish and chambered nautilus behind closed doors as they're not (obviously) part of the marine fauna of the California coastline. On the plus side for cuttle fans, Righty is coming down to give a cuttlefish lecture for all of us! The good news about the sweet cephalopod exhibit at Monterey is that the GPO environment is being expanded, so more of us should be able to visit the great devilfish at the same time. The (currently) closed ceph area will have a grand reopening next month. Erich pipsquek Apr 6th, 2005, 12:16am So, instead, Saturday is shaping up to be "lecture day". We may need to look into a catered lunch type deal... That is pretty easy. I am the Meat Dept. Manager at a local independent grocery store that does a lot of lunch caterings. Sandwiches, salads, BBQ ribs, chicken and tritip, plus various deli and fruit trays. Once we get a ballpark on the numbers I can give a qoute. tonmo Apr 6th, 2005, 08:25pm That is pretty easy. I am the Meat Dept. Manager at a local independent grocery store that does a lot of lunch caterings. Sandwiches, salads, BBQ ribs, chicken and tritip, plus various deli and fruit trays. Once we get a ballpark on the numbers I can give a qoute. Awesome. darandascifi Apr 7th, 2005, 11:19pm This sounds like a lot of fun. I love Monterey and hope to make it to the convention as a lifelong admirer of cephalopods. That is, if we get back from our honeymoon before then! :o) chrono_war01 Apr 8th, 2005, 01:55pm On TONMO's first post, what in the world is TBD?! Does it stand for TO BE DETERMINED? Also, what will the bar scene include? Any beer? Melissa Apr 8th, 2005, 02:13pm You are exactly right on both counts, Eric. TBD = to be determined, as we get confirmation for speakers. As for drinks, you can choose from all the juice, milk, soda, and water as you are too young to be served alcohol in the US. We have a reservation as a group for 9:30 on Sunday, August 7, at the aquarium. Melissa cthulhu77 Apr 8th, 2005, 05:40pm Sunday...August Seventh...A Day that shall live in INFAMY ! erich orser Apr 8th, 2005, 07:26pm I wonder what the entrance fee at the aquarium will be for Cthulhu... does he get a seniors' discount? :cthulhu: cthulhu77 Apr 8th, 2005, 07:42pm "Bow to me,inferior mortal" or somesuch???? Heck...I am only the 77th in descent...maybe I will get a balloon? tonmo Apr 9th, 2005, 01:07pm *ping* for the updated seed post... Squidman Apr 18th, 2005, 07:42am Will Sunday be the one and only time we visit the Monterey Bay aquarium? The plane tickets I'm looking at require me to be at the airport by 1:00pm on Sunday. chrono_war01 Apr 18th, 2005, 08:28am hm...most poeple are only staying for TONMOcon, is anyone going to stay there or go to Montery before TONMOcon? Melissa Apr 18th, 2005, 10:42am Will Sunday be the one and only time we visit the Monterey Bay aquarium? The plane tickets I'm looking at require me to be at the airport by 1:00pm on Sunday. So far, it looks like Sunday is the only day we'll go to the aquarium. However, you could go whenever you like. One pm at the airport may mean leaving Monterey by 11 am, depending on which airport. Most people will probably fly to San Jose or San Francisco. Monterey airport is only a few miles outside the town. Melissa erich orser Apr 18th, 2005, 07:21pm America West and United Airlines fly right into the Monterey Peninsula Airport, otherwise, the shuttles to and from SF and San Jose airports are every ninety minutes. Melissa Apr 27th, 2005, 09:44am We're trying to set up a tour of MBARI for Friday afternoon, probably at 1 and 3 pm, for two groups of 20. How many people would be there that early? Melissa chrono_war01 Apr 27th, 2005, 10:21am I might come, I might not, To be perfectly honest, I don't have a clue on what's going on. My brain only has a maximum 50 bytes you know... monty Apr 27th, 2005, 01:29pm We're trying to set up a tour of MBARI for Friday afternoon, probably at 1 and 3 pm, for two groups of 20. How many people would be there that early? Melissa I hope to make it by then... I'm not sure if I'm flying or driving, though; if the latter, I may make it by 3 more likely than 1. I'm not sure if my SO will be coming as well... so I might be 2 people, although she also may not be able to get off work Friday and would have to meet me Saturday or something. Melissa Apr 27th, 2005, 01:34pm Thanks, Monty! For now, it's not important to have all the details about when you'll arrive and how many will be in your party, but when we start planning the actual groups for MBARI, numbers and arrival time will be crucial. Details to come - including transport 20 miles up the coast. If we're carpooling, that will be another detail. See you in August! Melissa erich orser Apr 27th, 2005, 07:02pm Those of us who are driving will probably be able to accommodate a couple of extra people per vehicle for MBARI carpool purposes, unless of course somebody is coming via SUV/minivan/dirigible or some other conveyance with more passenger seating. corw314 Apr 27th, 2005, 08:31pm The agenda sounds great!!! Unfortunately I may have to attend by way of internet!!! Is that in the works for possably a live chat event? Carol Melissa Apr 28th, 2005, 09:31am Hi Carol I don't know about chat while we're in Monterey, but anyone who wants to can plan a chat during TONMOcon. This will be easier when the schedule is set. Chat will definitely be used to make plans before TONMOcon and after to update everyone who couldn't come. Maybe someone will videotape the talks. We'll ask everyone who speaks whether they'd be willing to put a description of their work and their presentations online, too. I'm sure people will put pictures on the site. Brainstorms welcome - please share your ideas to make TONMOcon an event to remember! Melissa Shepmoon Jul 1st, 2005, 04:04pm We're trying to set up a tour of MBARI for Friday afternoon, probably at 1 and 3 pm, for two groups of 20. How many people would be there that early? I plan to arrive Thursday afternoon, so I'll be there for the MBARI tour, either time. Shepmoon (aka Steve) tonmo Jul 5th, 2005, 07:02am Folks: Unfortunately, it turns out that Dr. Steve O'Shea will not be able to attend TONMOcon due to timing and logistics. I don't need to tell you that this is a real bummer!! Other than the obvious void, the event should remain unchanged, and we certainly have enough content to fill Saturday's events. chrono_war01 Jul 5th, 2005, 07:06am AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PurpleTentacle Jul 5th, 2005, 10:24am Dr. Steve O'Shea will not be able to attend TONMOcon due to timing and logistics. But he'd have plenty of time to make it to Cleveland on Sunday for the Neil Diamond show! chrono_war01 Jul 5th, 2005, 11:26am *sniff* It's still a shame that he couldn't go... Squidman Jul 5th, 2005, 07:44pm AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Agreed. Steve O'Shea Jul 5th, 2005, 07:47pm  Steve is fighting some pretty major battles over here right now, and is under seige. I am terribly sorry!! PurpleTentacle Jul 5th, 2005, 09:09pm No worries. It's disappointing news, but I'm sure we all understand. I can't speak for Mr. Diamond though. As for being under siege, remember the famous words of Chesty Puller: "We're surrounded. That simplifies the problem!" chrono_war01 Jul 6th, 2005, 04:49am under seige by what? Infusoria Jul 6th, 2005, 07:42am under seige by what? Me, probably, though I do bribe him with doughnuts. monty Jul 6th, 2005, 12:30pm  Steve is fighting some pretty major battles over here right now, and is under seige. I am terribly sorry!! Sorry to hear that, I hope you can cope. Does that mean one of your minions can use your plane ticket, at least? erich orser Jul 6th, 2005, 09:15pm How about a taped (or preferably on disc) talk from SOS to be projected? Or a streaming-feed discussion (could be a logistical nightmare, actually)? I guess this means the ND impersonator will have to be called-off as well... Well, we will all just have to see Steve at TONMOcon II. The first round will be on me... or Greg, or Tony or somebody. Not sure Rebecca would approve of me buying all those pints... Melissa Jul 6th, 2005, 10:57pm I'm so sorry to read this! Steve, you will be missed. Can you send a minion from your lab in your stead? Or a taped talk, as Erich suggested? Melissa Steve O'Shea Jul 7th, 2005, 01:14am How'z about a small mpeg with me toasting all of you lot? A taped talk could be quite amusing ..... I'm feeling pretty bad about this, but it's out of my hands. Thales Jul 7th, 2005, 01:39am What about a web cast for Steve? Steve O'Shea Jul 7th, 2005, 03:57am Old farts like me (yes, I'm getting that way) wouldn't know what to do or where to start to get something like this set up. What I'd probably do is get something together and Fedex it to Tony - that's about as modern as I could get (and I still cannot figure out how planes fly). When it comes to IT I really am Victorian, and have still not recovered after having Felipe sticking an ?IPOD (a white sliver-like box) on my stereo, without wires, and having something played through the speakers, or Jason (aka Squidvicious) having a pen-like thing on the desk that recorded everything I said. It's just not natural!! I'll just quietly toast you all, and maybe send an MPEG (whatever that actually stands for) .. like what is a jpeg?? ... in fact what is a peg? ... and trust you all have a safe and enjoyable meeting, something that I am sure that you will have. I really do wish that I could make it over, and will eventually catch up with many of you - just not this time. Infusoria Jul 7th, 2005, 07:30am A web-cast would be cool - I'm sure we could set it up PurpleTentacle Jul 7th, 2005, 09:53am and maybe send an MPEG (whatever that actually stands for) Motion Picture Experts Group, the working group of ISO (the International Standards Organization) that develops standards for encoding movie files. .. like what is a jpeg?? It's a picture encoded is such a way as to meet the standards set forth by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. ... in fact what is a peg? ... It's a little thingamajig you stick in a hole. Thales Jul 7th, 2005, 10:23am :D I was 1/2 kidding! You will be missed, but it is completely understandable. Could you handle a phone call piped over a microphone for a toast at the opening? chrono_war01 Jul 7th, 2005, 01:02pm a taped talk would be good, but perhaps a live one would even be better. SteveCAM with sound effects. Not that I'm forcing this into everyone, but I'd say that be a great idea! You will be missed though. monty Jul 8th, 2005, 12:49pm What about a web cast for Steve? I've had good luck using Apple's chat (iChat AV, I believe) to do "telepresence" at meetings-- if anyone has an apple laptop and Steve has access to one on his end, that may be a possibility for a Steve-in-a-Box. I know similar solutions exist for Windows and Linux, but I haven't used them; the Apple one I know is pretty convenient, easy, and reliable, if there are macs about on both ends... If my girlfriend comes with to the con, we can probably use her ibook for the tonmocon end, but that's up in the air right now. chrono_war01 Jul 8th, 2005, 01:02pm I don't get it. monty Jul 8th, 2005, 01:43pm I don't get it. don't get what? If that's regarding my post, maybe I should rephrase: I have used apple's iChat to let someone do a video telecon over the internet to present to/interact with a group before, and it worked well. I have high confidence I could make it work again if we have one Mac+iSight in NZ and one in Monterey. Something similar could probably be done on Windows or Linux as well, but I haven't done it, so I can't say that for sure... I'm happy to try to help make this work if Steve & Melissa & Tony are up for it, but I'm not sure I will have a mac to bring, and I have no idea if Steve has access to one in Auckland-- I know TTF said they have mostly Windows machines... Does that make more sense? chrono_war01 Jul 8th, 2005, 01:49pm Oh...now I get it. Well, smae goes for me. I know how to rig up it by using MSN Messnger, but the quality won't be good. chrono_war01 Jul 10th, 2005, 02:15pm Since Doc SOS won't be coming, so what are we going to do to fill up that time table? (Perhaps a little editing needs to be done on TONMO's first post...) tonmo Jul 10th, 2005, 02:55pm Chrono -- Melissa, Erich and/or I will coordinate and will be communicating the final agenda soon. Stand by! Thanks - Melissa Jul 11th, 2005, 04:35pm Hi Steve and Monty I think TONMOcon will have ibooks on hand. I'm not sure whose, but we can make sure that it has the right software. We have a lot of wonderful scientists on the agenda. We hope Dr. Gilly will move into the top slot on the agenda, and we may be able to convince another fabulous researcher from MBARI to step in. Melissa chrono_war01 Jul 11th, 2005, 06:29pm cool! tonmo Jul 24th, 2005, 03:19pm The agenda has been updated! (http://www.tonmo.com/tonmocon/tonmocon.php) We're getting close!! OctopusV Jul 30th, 2005, 01:06pm I just have a few questions: A) What's the agenda for Friday look like now? B) Where is the Convention Center where Saturday's events will take place? C) What's the agenda for Sunday look like now? D) Will The agenda for the other two days be posted on the registration page again or somewhere else soon? tonmo Jul 30th, 2005, 01:24pm Quick answer for item B), it's at the Monterey Conference Center (http://www.monterey.org/mcc/). Will post this to the page as well! tonmo Jul 30th, 2005, 01:30pm And, re: A and C --- on Friday, there are tours of MBARI at 1pm and 3pm (see the thread devoted to this for details). On Sunday, we're going to visit the Monterey Aquarium on our own -- we'll informally meet up there (for example, I plan to be there first thing on Sunday morning when it opens). Re: D, I already have general acknowledgements for what's going on Friday and Sunday, I don't think I'll be posting anything more specific -- but do check out that MBARI thread. |
