View Full Version : My tank for near dead fish.
chrono_war01 Feb 24th, 2005, 09:08am So my tank's been over run with coraline algae...havn't been cleaned for months, don't know the level of nitrates and copper. And I have this sole/dab/flounder thing in my tank after seeing it lay around in the supermarket. What's does those bottom dwelling feeders eat?
Mine is about 20 cm long and has funny zebra lines on it back but it's brown and white. I suspect it's a Moses sole...
This will be a journal for all the rubbish fish I put in my tank.
Longest record for a animal alive: 3 prawns (6 months)
Shortest record: angelfish (30 seconds)
chrono_war01 Feb 25th, 2005, 03:07am The dab, sole flounder thing keeps bashing inyo the glass! But it sure is doing a good job churning up the sand. I gave it some dead shrimp without the shell but it's not eating it.
Jean Feb 26th, 2005, 04:11pm Our flounders and sole eat minced fish, but it takes them some time to get used to it. If your tank was as messy as you say then there may have been amphis that the flounder would eat, plus they'll go for any worms etc
Cheers
J
chrono_war01 Feb 27th, 2005, 10:33am Sorry, we don't really get live rock here, so no amphis and worms. How about shrimp without shells? I'll try mince fish next/ And how do I make the mince fish sink without causing the tank to become watery chum?
joel_ang Feb 28th, 2005, 01:24am If its possible, live food would be best, small fish or shrimp should work
chrono_war01 Feb 28th, 2005, 08:49am I think that his mouth couldn't even swallow this smiley  . It's like only 15 cm long at most. Plan to take it back to sea. :hmm:
chrono_war01 Mar 12th, 2005, 12:17pm whopee! My fish survived for a whole week!
The state of my tank is just like HK ( overcrowded).
New addistions include:
1 stone fish,
2 5cm long flounder sorta thing.
1 puffer fish
1 red fish thing
1 trigger fish thing.
Nancy Mar 12th, 2005, 12:47pm Is this the tank for fish you save from the supermarket? And wouldn't it be better to keep the tank in as good condition as possible?
Nancy
Colin Mar 14th, 2005, 04:45am try posting pics and we'll see if we can ID your 'things'
chrono_war01 Mar 14th, 2005, 05:54am my stonefish
I couldn't get the pics of the other fish since the other fishs move!
Colin Mar 14th, 2005, 05:55am Cool looking fish! Just watch your fingers!

Colin Mar 14th, 2005, 06:08pm well, all your 'thingfish' (zappa album :) ) are very nice looking fishies! And i dont think I have ever seen these for sale in the trade at all... think yourself lucky and take good care of them
Cheers
Colin
chrono_war01 Mar 17th, 2005, 06:13am Forgot, this fish only survived 3 hours... Bad shape when I got it....oh well, can't expect to be too good when they come from a market...
chrono_war01 Mar 17th, 2005, 06:21am And this is me diving for a scuba-thon to raise money for the Tusnami victims 2 months ago and the other pic is my fish tank
H. lunulata Mar 21st, 2005, 01:31pm flounders and all other flat fishes eat worms(live, live shrimps, and gobies and any other live fish that live on the bottom they prefer live stuff over dead stuff i fed mine live shrimps and every now and then a goby(expensive food though) and sometimes worms if i went down to the beach i would catch them. flatfishes take time to accept frozen/dead food so be patient and try some white shrimp from www.liveaquaria.com or just plain ghost shrimp(white shrimp are better since they live in saltwater. also watch that trigger and puffer as tey do pick at flatfishes and rays(even though they are completely different) and that also might be why it is not feeding.
Jean Mar 21st, 2005, 04:10pm Hey CW
stunning flounder/sole! and don't feel too bad about the loss (hard I know) of the silver/yellow fish, it had terrible scale damage, It's pretty hard to bring fish back from that sort of injury without intensive nursing.
Way to go on the scuba thon........how much did you raise?
J
chrono_war01 Mar 25th, 2005, 10:58am the zebra flatfish is dead amd the puffer died too.
added 2 triggers though amd a presumed damselfish.
the stonefish is somewhat amused since it swallowed a freshwater fish I got from my friend's tank. It seems to like it though.
P.S; Added a mose's sole and grouper in there, didn't survive the night desipte the hard work of the poeple in ER.
Names
Trigger 1: Floaty --DEAD
Trigger 2: Spotty --DEAD
Trigger 3: Triggy --DEAD

Flatfish 1: Ghost --DEAD
Flatfish 2: Wraith --DEAD
Red fish: Munchy --DEAD
Damsel : Goldie --DEAD
H. lunulata Mar 25th, 2005, 12:49pm you really need to get a water test done and stop addinf all thoses fish to you tank IT HAS ENOUGH fish in it if a puffer died it might have released a toxin that could have killed everything in there SO WATCH EVERYTHING CLOSEYLY and dont add anymore fish you have way to many and get a water test done
chrono_war01 Mar 26th, 2005, 12:09pm nope, the puffer dies weeks ago. Nothing happens muich in my tank although I might of a single tube worm living on the rocky um...rocks. Anyway, I plan to take the 2 flatfish off intensive care and put them back to sea, see?
raised 150 HK for scuba-thon. 7.9 HK = 1 US.
H. lunulata Mar 26th, 2005, 12:12pm good if you plan on keeping any other fish in that tank get a water test done
chrono_war01 Mar 26th, 2005, 12:14pm but I can't ! They don't sell these kits in HK and sending my water samples to the local aquarium will cause my funds to go to 0 and that includes getting my money from mom in advance for 3 months!
H. lunulata Mar 26th, 2005, 02:47pm oh i did not realize that your store doesnt do it for free my store does it for free how much would it cost for you to get one at you local fish store
Nancy Mar 26th, 2005, 09:39pm So the point of this tank is short term care for fish you rescue from the fish market? And you'll eventually return them to the ocean?
Do you have any filtration or do you rely only on water changes? And are you using ocean saltwater - are you lucky enough to live very near the ocean?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to get a better picture of what you're doing.
By the way, keep up the scuba diving! It's a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot about the ocean and its inhabitants.

chrono_war01 Mar 31st, 2005, 12:45pm So the point of this tank is short term care for fish you rescue from the fish market? And you'll eventually return them to the ocean?
Yes, but I might keep some fish that are too small to be worthy of releasing. ( Too easy to become prey)
Do you have any filtration or do you rely only on water changes? And are you using ocean saltwater - are you lucky enough to live very near the ocean?
I have a Bio-wheel for filtration and I live so close to the ocean that I can smell it and see jellyfish on a sunny day.
By the way, keep up the scuba diving! It's a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot about the ocean and its inhabitants.
You bet.
chrono_war01 Apr 17th, 2005, 05:25am Arghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friends thought that putting a shark in my tank would be fun, so he put a small shark in and now I can't get it out becuase it it to aggresive!
Help!
Squidman Apr 17th, 2005, 03:54pm What kind of shark?
chrono_war01 Apr 17th, 2005, 10:47pm I don't really know, put its not the normal shark you get, at least it doesn't fit into the Great White Shark Mold.
clownfish Apr 22nd, 2005, 08:50pm hey I would fix up that tank if I were you even if the fish arnt there for there life what I would do is emty the tank until there is about a half an inch of water there pour your tank empty of all things exept shark and little water into into a plastic trash bag bring him back to the sea wala can you send me a picture
chrono_war01 Apr 23rd, 2005, 03:17am hey I would fix up that tank if I were you even if the fish arnt there for there life what I would do is emty the tank until there is about a half an inch of water there pour your tank empty of all things exept shark and little water into into a plastic trash bag bring him back to the sea wala can you send me a picture
fix what tank?
clownfish Apr 23rd, 2005, 01:21pm the way you discribed your tank it led me to think you dont take the best care of it water test things like that
DocFrye Apr 23rd, 2005, 03:30pm I guess I have a hard time imagining why you claim to be rescuing these fish. At least in the market they would have died quickly without lingering on in the overcrowded, disease infested, toxic prison you seem to call "intensive care." I am sorry to say it, but it really seems more like intensively careless.
chrono_war01 Apr 24th, 2005, 01:19am no, it's not over crowded, it's just that I keep forgetting to post that I releases the majority of them, speakin' of diseases, hm...since I get natural sea water through some sort of carbon filter, I guess that would have a better chance with the sea water I get than in the ocean. Not to mention the oil slick near our coast....Toxic...Hah.....Anyway, I releases most of them last Friday....
And I'm trying to raise 250 bucks to get my water to get the tests done...
chrono_war01 Jul 5th, 2005, 06:56am now that I have moved and all the fish is released, I went to my fishing pal's house and found out that he has dumped his 40 gal. freshwater tank and bought and approx 65 -70 gal. salt water tank tank a month ago and is now planning to go for a 100 gal. tank  .
Since he was what some might refer as a newbie (new person), he bought something which he found quite useless since either 1) His tank does not require that, 2) Another product is more effiecnt or 3) He bought is to compare which is better.
So:
I now have a free protein skimmer, and new set of water salnity and temperature kits, a one big pro who has spend 45 minutes lecturing me on the depthness of sand and what I should get when I get my tank started again
Squidman Jul 5th, 2005, 07:31pm Cool.
chrono_war01 Jul 6th, 2005, 04:48am now I have to saw off a top bit off my tank cover to fit in for the protein skimmer.
Colin Jul 6th, 2005, 11:16am yeah, thats always fun...
chrono_war01 Jul 7th, 2005, 01:14pm not if you don't have a saw...
Colin Jul 7th, 2005, 02:16pm jig saw is best if you can get a loan of one?
chrono_war01 Jul 7th, 2005, 02:41pm nope, all I have is a very large crow bar and a steak knife.
Colin Jul 8th, 2005, 08:20am and a big packet of bandages?
chrono_war01 Jul 8th, 2005, 01:01pm no, just some wooden limps
