View Full Version : Fishkeeping can be fatal!
Colin Jan 5th, 2005, 05:24am A fishkeeper has died in his Manhattan apartment after cutting himself on the fish tank he fell on to.
According to a report from the New York Times, the man, Antonio Perez, lost his balance and fell onto the aquarium, causing it to fall over and smash.
An artery in Mr Perez's arm was severed and he later died at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center.

Colin Jan 5th, 2005, 11:16am Heres my best fish tank scar 8-)
Got that on the corner of the glass and got 3 stitches for my troubles
its my elbow BTW
Jean Jan 5th, 2005, 03:44pm I've not managed a serious cut yet from a tank (just waiting on a filletting knife to slip tho' :hmm: ) But our *$^#*^#($^@ midget octopus bit me on Sunday....after I saved him from crashing onto the floor too....ungrateful wretch.....makes for a grumpy Jean!

DHyslop Jan 5th, 2005, 04:48pm I saw some bikers on Real TV or some such show that were bobbing for live fish in an aquarium at a rally. One of them was pushing a bit too hard against the glass with his torso and broke the tank with his head in it. It was a 55 or a 75, too. I guess when you're doing a stunt like that you should stick with acrylic.

chrono_war01 Jan 12th, 2005, 06:35am So, I've never had had stiches in my life and I don't really think I have seriously cut myself.....Is it normal for a 14 year old to not get hurt? ( No dislocated bones, no stiches, nothing serioous..)
corw314 Jan 12th, 2005, 06:40am Ouch!!!! I don't want to jinx myself, but I've been lucky.....
Jean...How bad did he get you??? Was he making the great escape???Wonder where he thought he was going????
chrono_war01 Jan 12th, 2005, 08:50am I can see the title :

You're just not trying hard enough , by the time I was your age I had cut my thumb in half (modelling knife), stitch over the eye (surfboard tail, whilst attempting a 360), broken wrist (hitting some guy - Roger something-or-other). Maybe I'm just accident prone, especially after today's Formalin in the eye trick... I am in soooo much trouble over that one.
chrono_war01 Jan 13th, 2005, 04:09am So, it's me that's not accident prone perhaps...all my friends have at least needed cruches or stiches at least once.
Infusoria Jan 13th, 2005, 04:19am Yup, keep up the 'not accident prone' thing. Oh, done the crutches thing aswell! (skateboard - medial knee ligaments - mishap).
chrono_war01 Jan 13th, 2005, 06:49am SO, it seems like not liking sports has it good side....

He got me but good! Tis still sore and it's been two weeks! Not sure where he was going but the last one that took that route ended up dead!
As for the tally of injuries, hmmmmmm let me see, stitches to the corner of my eye, stitches on my hand and 5 months in a cast after I shattered my leg (still have a plate and 11 pins holding it all together
 ) the really scary thing is I did all this as an adult!!

This is bad, no wonder you are gibbering under your desk...
Swarvegorilla Mar 4th, 2005, 09:23am but I so have you beat on da mishaps. Lucky on the scar front though!! Still trying for the perfect jaw line symbol of manhood.
Have however been a human torch with a nice desil fertiliser misshap, pulled a machette out of my shin (nice throw friend!!), been crushed by a boat launched from a car, zapped a few dozen times, bitten by mangrove jacks and eels, poisoned by bad prawns, almost run down by everything from mainbattle tanks and luxury cruisers to drunk housewives in 4wd, crashed almost anything mobile.......
Ummmm yea I have a little voice that says 'do it, go on, do it, what are you a wimp, don't even think about thinking, do it'. Some people don't apparently. But then some people didn't first try a job that involved picking up landmines and boobytraps.
Live and learn is the key I thinks. Still selling goldfish to the general public has a few hazards........ quite often that i strain something internal trying to think up a way to explain the nitrogen cycle to a new customer.
8-) Scars rock the caz-bar!!

I suspect you may be a cat owner ?
risk taking is a classic symptom of someone infected with the toxiplasma parasite. You are more likely to be involved in a car accident involving a cat owner than a drunk driver !
Stay away from sources of cat poo, such as cats !
On a lighter note & to get back on piste I nearly choked to death on some fish flake I was trying, it is SO chokey ! :yuck:
Always have a drink to hand when sampling petfood.
(Purina dog mixer is the best)

chrono_war01 Mar 5th, 2005, 12:25am Who in the world would try petfood!?
Scooby-snacks, anyone?
Munch Munch.
Swarvegorilla Mar 5th, 2005, 09:39am No..... I used to be a grunt.
8-)
Do work with a few cats though. Or kitty widdys as we call them in the biz.
People have died at the rockpool I am planning to collect from. But then rock fishing claims lots of people in oz. I have found the secret to be to go at low tide. You know the time when wave AREN'T crashing over said shell and weed covered rocks. Oh and I have some sweet bootys.
A spear fisherman got 'attacked' by a great white a few weeks ago near where I sometimes snorkle . Only a friend talked to his dive partner and apparently it is all hyped way way out of proportion. Shark just nudged him and grazed a bit of his skin off. idiot should have just cut his fish loose. Went and blabbed and wow he's the man that survived.
Christ..... all we need is people paranoid about sharks. Every year there is less and less and less. Hardly ever see them anymore. Will be a bit lame when all the big things are gone and all we will have left to worry about are bacteria and virus diseases from our pets poo....

probably contains less additives & GM than the crud produced for human consumption & wouldn't you want to be sure what you're about to give Deefer or Oafer is tasty & wholesome ?
Mangetout is my motto !
Swarvegorilla, I can't claim to have been victim of a shark attack but I did get bitten by a bat which I caught while fishing !
No harm done as long as I get in before dawn & garlic sucks !
