View Full Version : Just who is this Cthulhu guy anyway?
PurpleTentacle Nov 16th, 2004, 07:04pm That's what I was wondering, having seen and heard references to him ranging from a Metallica song to the User-friendly comic strip. I did some googling and found an online version of "Call of Cthulhu" on some web site. I read it, but I wasn't terribly impressed. It was a nice story and it does sort of make you wonder about your nightmares, but it just wasn't very scary. In your opinions, do the other Cthulhu stories get better or worse? Should I spend the time looking for and reading them?
cthulhu77 Nov 16th, 2004, 09:16pm No other mythos has been so widely written about, than the Cthulhu mythos...from Stephen King to Robert Bloch, almost every fantasy/horror writer has something based in it...and no, they aren't meant to be frightening, more of just "uneasy"...a little more refined sense of horror, although some of the stories from the 20's do have laughable grammar...ah well...

Right, I don't need to read that book now. :P
Steve O'Shea Nov 17th, 2004, 06:29am I still can't say 'cthulhu' without spitting everywhere. How's it pronounced anyway? Thooloo? Thoolhoo? K-spit-splutter(German gutteral sound)-hoolhoo? Why couldn't they have just called him Pig or something?
cthulhu77 Nov 17th, 2004, 07:10am most people say "kah-thoo-loo" but some purists insist that Lovecraft pronounced it "kah-too-loo"... the name comes from the tales being cthonic...there is also this place:
http://www.locksley.com/arkham
Dragonscales Nov 17th, 2004, 08:24am Alot of Lovecraft's writings weren't exactly horrific by today's standards, but the man also lived just after the turn of the last century. Language was different, inventions we take for granted today were "sci-fi" to people back then and people were easier to take fright due to a lack of horror flicks with advanced special effects about. Make no mistake though, Lovecraft is the definitive father of the macabre and horror would not be the same without his influence. He took suspense, the supernatural, thrillers and general horror then added a twist to create some of the most original, disturbing, breathtaking and utterly, grotesquely, brilliantly dark displays of literature of his day.
Some interesting facts about him is that he barely made a cent from his works (most was through the publishing of short stories to horror and sci-fi type pop culture magazines at the time, a bit of a trend back then) and they would have remained unknown if it wasn't for his collegues publishing them after his early death - he never published one of his own books. He also predominantly corrosponded with people through letters rather than conversation. He loved to take the piss out of his peers by telling each of them a different way on how to pronounce cthulu properly, that is why there is so much confusion to date as to how it is properly pronounced. Personally I think the only person who could really tell you it's proper pronounciation is Howard Phillip Lovecraft himself. I plan to ask him once I cross the barrier to where dark things do dwell.

Wow, this version is far more frightening. Especially the FAQ part.
PurpleTentacle Nov 17th, 2004, 11:03am they aren't meant to be frightening, more of just "uneasy"...a little more refined sense of horror
Yeah, I'll give him that. It turns out my library has a book with a small collection of Lovecrafts writings including the "The Shadow over Innsmouth." Assuming it's no 900 page epic, I'll give it a shot.
TPOTH Nov 17th, 2004, 07:55pm *grumbles*
I knew those fluffy cuddly fuzzy plush creatures were up to no good.... Nobody believes me when i say i can hear them muttering. I can see them moving... just at the edge of my vision... when i turn around they pretend... oh they do, i'm telling you! where's my flamethrower?!

Squidman Jul 16th, 2005, 03:11am This is good.
erich orser Jul 16th, 2005, 03:20am I don't know about that one; Cthulhu is vaguely humanoid of body, but not in some adonis-fashion. I always pictured him being shaped kind of similar to the late Chris Farley in body...
chrono_war01 Jul 16th, 2005, 07:00am still I have one question on my head, can I pronouce it as "coo (as in cool)low-who"
And that story about Coo-Low-Who and the plushies were tuly disturbing..I always imagined that Coo-low-who resembles a octo on a humans head or something....

With big webbed paws and feet, like a taloned frog, plus two stunted batlike wings sticking out between his shoulders! Don't picture him in your head, Chrono, whatever you do! He's bad! If you think about him too much, he'll be able to find you when he wakes up! Waitamin- I think I hear something outside - sort of a slopping sound, really - oh dear Lord! He's HERE! THE TENTACLE AT THE WINDOW-
WhiteKiboko Jul 16th, 2005, 02:18pm personally i think its easier to use the soft c (others may read 's' ) sound at the beginning and take the the route of something that could be hissed as apposed to the k-thool--hoo....
a bit more elegant, even if thats not what them elder gods were all about...
:cthulhu:
chrono_war01 Jul 16th, 2005, 03:08pm *coughs and sputters*
nope, can't pronouce it...

erich orser Jul 16th, 2005, 10:46pm Yeah, that's definitely closer. I might have mentioned this before, but how about Jack Black rampaging as Cthulhu?
WhiteKiboko Jul 17th, 2005, 12:00am how about Jack Black rampaging as Cthulhu?

CapnNemo Oct 4th, 2005, 05:53am Wow Monty, thanks for that link, that looks fabulous, I've just ordered my copy (luckily my DVD player is multi region). I like the idea of it being a silent movie as well.

This. (http://members.cox.net/natas_enasni/Cthulhuchick.gif)
This is another fine parody of a tract by Jack Chick (http://www.chick.com/default.asp), who is a bit of an idiot.
:cthulhu:
OctopusV Oct 6th, 2005, 12:08am Try as I might, on the movie site I can't get the trailer to work in any size or player!
erich orser Oct 6th, 2005, 12:30am That Cthulhu Chick tract was specifically done by my friend Howard Hallis for the very first Mighty Cthulhu Old-Time Revival Show up at Burning Man 2002. It proved to be immensely popular as I spent a lot of the festival handing them out for my very first Cthulhu service that took place on the Esplanade right after the main burn.
Howard had this posted on his website for a while and it started getting ridiculous numbers of daily hits. About that time, Jack Chick's lawyers got ahold of it and started making a stink. As Howard had just grabbed original artwork by Mr. Chick and inserted his own dialogue, Lovecraftian quotes, other Cthulhu art he grabbed from the internet (funny, none of those other Cthulhu artists ever had any problem with it), etc., Chick's lawyers made him cease and desist, so he took it down off his website. A few other folks have since redrawn the art differently to give it more of a satire status legally, but by the time Chick's lawyers had gotten a hold of it so many people worldwide had downloaded it, put up copies on their own sites, emailed it friends, etc., that I doubt it will ever really stop circulating.
To Howard's legal credit, he fully complied with Mr. Chick's lawyers and has never put it up again, but like some sort of eldritch, gibbering, cyclopean Energizer bunny, it just keeps going and going and going...:cthulhu:
CapnNemo Oct 6th, 2005, 04:33am Well it's brilliant. I've done my bit in ensuring that it keeps being driven through the information superhighway as surely and inexorably as the Deep One blood flowing through my own veins.
Look to the sea... and the stars....
erich orser Oct 6th, 2005, 05:28am May, uh, Father Dagon and Mother Hydra bless (curse?) you for spreading this Cthulhoid cancer on, Capn Nemo. Glub! Glub!:cthulhu:
Howard could have totally fought the Chick legal assault on First Amendment grounds as legitimate satire, but didn't want to bother. Heck, he did that in about an hour and a half. Funny, talented guy.
cthulhu77 Oct 6th, 2005, 10:11am Thank god Shanlyn and I waited until November 1st to get married !!!
http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1053/1053_01.asp
hey, do you think we are in trouble since our first dance was "Living Dead Girl" ?????
CapnNemo Oct 6th, 2005, 10:26am Jack Chick's going to be pretty shocked when the stars are finally right.
Not only that, but by getting the child to dress in a Father Christmas costume he has unwittingly condemned her to HELL! Behold!

Fujisawas Sake Oct 6th, 2005, 05:57pm Maybe someone should send Jack Chick a Cthulhugram...
WhiteKiboko Oct 8th, 2005, 01:50pm Anyone heard of a band called H.p. lovecraft? i was browsing through a flea market and in a stall with all kinds of old vinvl and concert posters there was one for jefferson airplane at the filmore east... right below jefferson airplane was "H.P. Lovecraft"
any one heard their music? some how i doubt the writer came back to life after strange eons (ok 30 years) just to go to a concert...
there also was a somewhat beat up poster from a few years earlier stating the president and mrs. kennedy would be at the merchandise mart in dallas on Nov 22....

OctopusV Oct 10th, 2005, 07:43pm Yestaerday at the annual Ventura Boulevard street fair, some odd woman gave my mother the original Chick Tract that the Cthulist spoof was based on, obviously, the original was far more frightening.
bigGdelta Oct 11th, 2005, 01:43am I once wore a Campus Crusade for Cthulhu t shirt to a baptist student union picnic. I don't think any of them got the joke.
OctopusV Oct 11th, 2005, 01:49am No, very few know of the true faith. Maybe a Miskatonic church could be founded. Hmmm...

Graeme- verging on just plain silly
erich orser Oct 13th, 2005, 07:46am I prefer Kadath in the Cold Waste. Arrived by Shantak. Skybar there was awesome, except for the sucker prints on the 'clean' glasses, but hey, ol' Nyaly's a pretty good host, so who am I to quibble? Didn't really appreciate the amorphous flautists much, however. Didn't know any Johnny Mercer songs. Just kept playing Neil Diamond incessantly.

Ee-gads, no wonder Azathoth's blind and stupid!!!! He wen't dumb with the insanity of hearing constant Neil Diamond songs for countless aeons! I would!
Think I know the place you mean though. Had Shoggoth waitors, and Nyogtha behing the bar?I got a request played; they did a really natty Swing version of Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden, which was surprising! Just don't ask them to do Shine On You Crazy Diamond... EVER! The original's enough to open rifts in space and time!

erich orser Oct 24th, 2005, 08:29pm Hmm. I just got a very odd package in my mailbox today. It was a business-sized manilla envelope addressed to me. The return address was "Starry Wisdom, 472a Calvin Court, Providence, RI 01294". It bore three thirty-seven cent stamps in the upper right corner, each showing a photographic image of the Cthulhu that appeared at Tonmocon I (only this was a photo taken from www.eatenbysquid.com).
Inside the envelope was a glossy image from the Sistine Chapel ceiling showing Adam reclining and reaching out to touch the finger of God. The Almighty had been replaced by an image of the Flying Spaghetti Monster! It featured the caption "TOUCHED BY HIS NOODLY APPENDAGE". Does anybody out there in Tonmoland, uh, know anything about this? It was not unwelcome, but still highly unexpected. Already spoke to Greg. He appears wholly innocent (of this at least).
Like I said at the top of this post, hmm...

Much as I'd like to take credit, I have no clue...
:cthulhu::arr: :thumbsup:
erich orser Oct 24th, 2005, 09:27pm No postmark whatsoever - it looks like it was hand-delivered, but all the likely suspects down here have been ruled-out, as it was either done while they were at work or they don't have my actual address (my searches online to determine this still bring up former addresses. Everything here is in Rebecca's name). The Flying Spaghetti Monster adds to the mystery as the only folks I know who are aware of this, er, religion are via online corespondance at tonmo.com.

Well, for what it's worth, I've seen references to the FSM from non-TONMO friends. Of course, my friends are pretty odd, but, er, I got the impression at the batshow that some of your friends might be a bit on the fringes as well -- I think the FSM stuff has developed quite a following in the, er, "interesting people" community...
Speaking of people I met at the bat show, did you watch the Calamari Wrestler Howard got you yet, and did his copy of the CoC movie arrive (and have you seen it?)
I have a friend-of-a-friend who does forensic DNA analysis, but I don't know her well enough to ask her to run the envelope for you, I'm afraid...
erich orser Oct 24th, 2005, 10:40pm Don't worry about it. The culprit will probably be incapable of keeping to it themselves indefinitely.
Uh, yes, based on The Bat Show - I do know a lot of folks in the "interesting people" category. Speaking of that, yes, Howard has now gotten the COC dvd in the mail and is trying to set up a movie-watching party featuring that AND The Calamari Wrestler on his 68" HDTV Sony, probably for November.

erich orser Oct 26th, 2005, 07:28am In about 45 minutes from now (8:00 AM EST - 5:00 AM PST), Cartoon Network will be airing an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy entitled "The Prank Call of Cthulha". As this is a kids' show that at times has been awash with Lovecraftiana - particularly the episode where moronic Billy finds a copy of the Necronomicon and is temporarily transformed into an evil genius (when Yog Sothoth and the other Outer Gods finally devour him at the end, they promptly spit him back out. Even they can't find any value in the poor, smelly kid) - I figured I should alert anyone out there with Tivo or a TV handy. Unfortunately, The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Collect Call of Cthulhu" from the Eighties is still only available as a bootleg. Jeez, I'm a complete, utter geek.:cthulhu:
erich orser Oct 26th, 2005, 06:31pm Wow. According to this episode of Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Cthulhu owns both a tiki/tentacle-themed cafeteria, a call center boiler-room filled with cubicle-dwelling monsters, and likes to spend his time golfing in two-toned shoes and plaid plus-fours. He's a mediocre golfer with a wise-ass caddy.:cthulhu:
cthulhu77 Oct 27th, 2005, 10:33am found some good info on episode 58 here:

Graeme Oct 28th, 2005, 07:45am Gah! What's this prog!? Don't think we get it over here. Sound quite funny. Like that dude who does the Cuthooloo strips on the Unspeakable Vault of something or other.
Hmmm, a Cthulhu Call-centre... lol.
"Hi, my name's Nyogtha from "Out Of Space Kitchens", just phoning to ask if you're the homeowner there? That's great! Well, you have the chance of having your kitchen replaced or upgraded at NO COST! Yeah we do, but I don't really watch TV, and so don't know if it's shown here. We hav Toonami as well, which is supposed to be an anime channel, but it only shows cheap western imitations... and Dragonball Z. Bit of a let-down really. I'll have to look for this show though!

Graeme Feb 27th, 2006, 05:20am Are we talking about Cradle of Filth here? Not a big fan of black metal, but I do like a bit of Emperor, Immortal and Dimmu, but that's about it. Unless I'm mistaken COF did a song called "Cthulhu Rising"?? If that's the link then I apologise, I'm in hte uni library on a computer y'see, so no sound...
