View Full Version : here comes my painting
Tigerkatze_82 Nov 11th, 2004, 02:32pm Hello my ceph-friends :D
I am painting from time to time and thought I should share my latest painting with you. It shows 5 cuttles and it was done with oil + acrylic paint on a 70 x 100 cm canvas...
I don't have any title for it yet - so suggestions are welcome :)
And here it is

Tigerkatze_82 Nov 14th, 2004, 08:36am Thanks, thanks, thanks :notworth: ... happy you liked it
Oohh, this poor thing still doesn't have any name :|
I took some front-view-pictures, but had problems with light reflections. It either was too dark (no colors) or too bright (shiny and no colors) :bugout:. One pic is ok and was submitted to the gallery ... The real painting is much nicer though, so you have to come here to see it
Cheers,

Tigerkatze_82 Jan 24th, 2006, 07:28am Hi
As promised on the introduction thread last week, I will upload some of the paintings I did during the last year. Apparently I was not able to find the upload-button to the tonmo-gallery however (does anybody know how to upload?... I can't remember how I did it before ), I will share some pics here...
The first (most recent) one is this:
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/sepiatraum2.jpg
Oil on canvas
100 x 70 cm
"Traum, verursacht durch den nahenden Abgabetermin, eine Sekunde vor dem Aufwachen"
"Dream caused by the approaching deadline one second before waking up"
K Wolfram 2005-06
This painting was done while writing on the final parts of my master's thesis and shows some things I spend my time (and dreams :) on during the past year:
The genetic variability among cuttlefishes from various areas was investigated and some work was done on the oxygen carrier haemocyanin... In the meantime, cuttlefishes were raised with plenty of food (Crangon) from tiny hatchlings to gorgeous animals with mantle lengths of currently more than 15 cm (Jan 06). Sheepish hermit crabs were hired as cleaner for some of our tanks... Well, that's enough explanation for the moment
In the end this painting was also used as cover illustration of my master's thesis.
Hope you like it - if you do, pls let me know
Best regards from Germany,
K :cuttle:
P.S.: By the way, we are still looking for tissue (or/and blood!) samples from cuttlefishes from the Mediterranean Sea. If you can help, pls let me know...
joefish84 Jan 25th, 2006, 10:19am heres one "dances with cuttles"
Tigerkatze_82 Jan 25th, 2006, 02:45pm Hi
The following one was done in summer 05. Again it's oil on canvas (100 [height] x 70 cm [width]) and again it's a tiny little bit cuttle-related (otherwise I wouldn't post here, right ) ... Hehe ... This one was done for a poster dealing with cuttlefish physiology (for a scientific conference).
The first two pictures show the two cuttlefishes that were painted for this poster: the upper one was meant to emphasize respiratory and circulation system - the lower one was more neurophysiological. Both cuttlefishes are on one canvas (just too difficult to get a clear pic with both). The last picture shows how they were arranged on the final poster ...

Tigerkatze_82 Jan 30th, 2006, 03:47pm Hallo
Once again, thank you for all those nice comments about my paintings
Here is one more I would like to share. This time it's not painted on canvas, but on a wall (my family's bathroom, app. 163 x 185 cm). It was painted long time ago (in 1999) and only recently was cuttle-lized
Yes, I admit the dolphin part was stolen from / inspired by the "miracle of life" painting by C.R. Lassen :grad: Hehe... I liked his stuff when I was 16
These first three pictures show the (ceph-free) original painting while it was painted in 1999...
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/20061.JPG
I always felt this painting wasn't complete  So here in the upper left corner just below the sea surface is this little brandnew ceph-addition that I was painting during my last visit at home (xmas 2005)
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/20062.JPG
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/20064.JPG
Furthermore, on the seafloor there are three new cuttle-eggs and one tiny hatchling (in real size and with w-shaped iris!)... Hehe
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/20063.JPG
This last picture was not taken in front-view so it looks a little bit strange...
And after almost seven years I finally call this painting complete  Hehe...
Hope you like it,
Cheers,
K
Octomush Jan 30th, 2006, 08:32pm Thats got to be on of the most awsome murals ive ever seen!
cuttlegirl Jan 30th, 2006, 09:06pm What a cool place to take a bath. How did you make it waterproof???
bigGdelta Jan 31st, 2006, 01:29am Again very very cool work. All this stuff has got to go to the gallery.
Tigerkatze_82 Jan 31st, 2006, 04:49am Thanks
How did you make it waterproof???
To make it waterproof I used a special bathroom-varnish which is transparent and water resistant. I got it in a do-it-yourself-store...

SeaStarLiss Feb 7th, 2006, 09:47am soo beautiful! Thanks for sharing such talent.
Graeme Feb 10th, 2006, 09:43am These are amazing!! So do you paint other cephalopods or are you primarily interested in Cuttles? Again, fantastic work... I've done a couple for course poster presentations but they're not great, and absolutely awful compared to your pieces! All I can really say is WOW!
How they look to me are a sort of very realistic, but also very dynamic making them look almost like fantasy creatures, or not of this world, yet still grounded in our reality! Very dramatic; like a dream! Wish I could afford to buy one of them!
Graeme
Tigerkatze_82 Feb 10th, 2006, 07:30pm  Hehe... very nice to receive such a positive response ... and very encouraging... I immediately feel attempted to turn those white virgin canvas standing next to me in something more colorful
SeaStarLiss, thank you and :welcome: to TONMO! Nice to see your second post is a response to my paintings. I feel honored...
Graeme, thanks! I was working with/on Sepia during the last three years of my study and I admit I fell in love with this gorgeous creature. Sepia is so amazing in terms of behaviour and physiology and - most important to me - they are so beautiful, I think. So yes, I'm primarily interested in cuttlefish at the moment, but this may be due to the fact that I don't really have any lab experience with other cephalopods. There are some other cephs that are pretty interesting (e.g. Argonauta :argonaut: , Taningia , Vampyroteuthis :vampyro: ), but as I don't know them "in person" (i.e. except from books and movies etc.) I always ended up with cuttles on my canvas so far... I would appreciate any suggestions for other cephs in my paintings, so if you were thinking of a certain species, please feel free to share your idea...
In general, my paintings are not for sale and all of them (minus one exception [post #15]) are kept by either me or my family, but of course I won't rule out to sell some someday, if somebody is really interested (i.e. depending on how much people are willing to pay ). Which one are you interested in?
What kind of course poster presentation painting have you done? Cuttlefishes, other cephalopods? I am curious...
Cheers,
K :sink:
bigGdelta Feb 10th, 2006, 11:36pm Tiger you should do a cuttlefish mural using flipflop paints so the cuttle changes color depending on where you stand

Hehe, yeah. For example with a male in the center courting a female to his left (or right). And when the viewer is approaching the female (and changes his/her position) the male starts to display an intense zebra pattern  Pretty cool idea actually...
Here is another one from last year...

It was an ocotpus and a squid, just typical representatives of the species really. THey were just done in watercolour, so they were nothing special... I could take a photo of them if you really want, but they're not great! Especially compared to your work, as I said.
I know what you mean about sepia though; they're amazing animals! It's a shame but in my experience they seem to be overlooked, everyone wants to know about octopus or squid.

Tigerkatze_82 Mar 22nd, 2006, 05:32pm Hi
here comes my current "masterpiece" ... it shows some cuttlefishes in :tentacle:, a lady cuttlefish laying eggs in the foreground etc. ... and, most important, it's not finished yet, so if you want to see your great idea in my painting, you still have time to tell me your suggestion  hehe

Tigerkatze_82 May 21st, 2006, 12:19pm Hi
Thanks a lot for the nice comments about my paintings.
Very beautiful!! I would like to hang the squid-dalí painter in my blog if if doesn't matter to you.
www.mondopulpo.blogspot.com
Hehe, please don't call my cuttlefish "squid" - cuttles are much prettier, aren't they?
Thanks for asking! Well, I gave the original painting away to a friend, but I think it's fine with the new owner, if I digitally spread it around the world  ... I've had a quick look at your blog (nice!) - yes, I think my painting would fit well, you can post it there. I would appreciated if you write "painted by K. Wolfram" or something like that. Do you need a higher resolution image or do you want to take the TONMO-one?...
If you post my painting on your site, I would like to add a link from my artwork-website (I am currently rebuilding a flash version at http://katze.cabspace.com/KWolframPortfolio.html ... takes some time to load) to your blog and hope that is ok for you. Is it?
I also have a few new paintings to share:
First off, the painting from the first post of this thread which cannot be displayed anymore (the entire server got lost)
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/kwolfram1.jpg
it was oil and acrylic on canvas (100 x 70 cm)
Then a recent one from early 2006

another close-up picture:

and finally, the entire painting:

K. Wolfram, 2005 - 2006
oil on canvas (100 x 70 cm)
Hehe, and I've painted in oil on cuttlebone (which is a bit tricky, actually)... Don't know if anybody is interested in seeing this, so I will only post one:

Hehe. No, no - don't hesitate! ... it's always nice to hear that people like my paintings. And people who appreciate cephalopods / understand my paintings are not that common over here, so thanks for the nice comment!
Best wishes,

tonmo May 29th, 2006, 07:11am Yeah, this is a great thread. Thanks for sharing T82.
bigGdelta Jun 1st, 2006, 10:03pm looking forward to seeing more. Your paintings are great.
Tigerkatze_82 Jun 19th, 2006, 05:31am Hello TONMOers
looking forward to seeing more. Your paintings are great.
Sorry for keeping you waiting
I am currently working on a painting I started in last summer... I wasn't very happy with it and left it to dry among some others from the "unfinished"-family and then almost forgot it for many months (a previous stage is on my website).
A couple of days ago I re-discovered it and realised that it's not as bad as I thought it was... so I continued to paint and after plenty of Phthalo Blue I am suddenly very happy with its development now...
Right now I'm allowing the canvas to dry a bit, so it's a good time to take some pics and share them with you. It's not yet finished and I am thinking of further emphasising the reflection of light on the skin and of adding some bubbles plus perhaps some fish shaped shadows in the background...
http://people.freenet.de/kawolfram/TONMO/kwolfram8.jpg
It's oil on canvas (100 x 80 cm)
I haven't found a final title for this painting yet. I am thinking of "Crangon's hell", "No, they don't bite - they just wanna play.", "Wrong time, wrong place" or something similar. What do you think? Any suggestion?
Gruß,
K :sink:
P.S.: On my screen the picture looks MUCH more pale than the original painting (very colorful! :rainbow: )... I start to dislike my digicam :hmm:

I've just uploaded a new layout of my portfolio and thought I should also exhibit some of the ceph-related works here...
The following images show paintings done on cuttlebones. I have collected them whenever an animal died and thought they are too precious to just lay in a box on the top of my bookshelf... So here are some of them:

erich orser Dec 14th, 2006, 03:25am WOW!!! Pure genius! The fact that these are painted on cuttlebone is intense enough, but the fact that you did a cuttly portrait of Bacchus (a personal fave, for obvious reasons) and then did David's "Death of Marat" - Holy Toledo!!! What would be a competitive price for either? These are truly - ridiculously - unique works of art. I'm poor, I don't care. This is art that needs to be championed. I've really liked your works in the past, but this is sheer genius. Absolutely amazing. When you've completed a couple more, you need to contact Juxtaposed magazine. Seriously.
erich orser Dec 14th, 2006, 03:26am I mean, seriously.
Tigerkatze_82 Dec 14th, 2006, 04:06am Hey, hey, hey, thank you Erich. I wasn't prepared for such a nice feedback  *smile* Really, thanks for the encouraging words.
I have a few more Cuttlebonepaintings on my Portfolio in the "Cuttlebone Gallery", e.g. "Rokeby Venus" by Velasquez, "Straw Hat" by Rubens, "Swans reflecting Elephants" by Dalí (although this one looks really bad through my digi-cam) and some more... upcoming portfolio-additions are the "Saturn" by Rubens and the "Saturn" by Goya ...
I was actually just kidding in my reply to Tintenfisch - these cuttlebones come from animals I raised during the past year (while I was graduating), so I've seen them hatching, growing and dying... They have little numbers on the ventral sides and some of them have cute little bitemarks (from evil tankmates ). I don't think I would be comfortable giving them away at any price at the moment...
However, if people really like it, I could try to find somebody who has access to wild cuttlebones (e.g. collected on a beach) and then start a sell-able collection
Juxtapose magazine? This is the second time within the last 48 hours somebody is suggesting me to have a look at this magazine  I have never heard of it before, but I'm starting to get extremly curious now and will have a look at it... Is it a printed magazine or a kind of website?
