I finaly got to bring home the bimac last night.
It didn't want to leave the bag at first, but after some coaxing it went
into the tank just fine.
It's got about a 2" arm span, and was chasing pods around the rock
after 15 minutes.

Funny part was, it didn't seem to like the sand sticking to it's arms.
So it would be chasing a "bug" around the rocks, follow it into the sand,
and immediatly "jump back" and find another pod to chase.

Maybe a tank raised bimac has never seen sand before. :)

That's what I thought.

It looks like a little kid trying to get something sticky off his hands.

Congratulations!

thanks,

Cephkid, where are you located in the frozen wastland?
I just noticed I'm in your neck of the ice.

Arbor Vitae(by Woodruff and Minoqua). Where'd you get that octo? I mean, Foster and Smith don't get them in unless you special order it (I know; my mom and dad have a patient who works there-she's actually the one who gave me the 30g- and she knows I'm after one...eventually). The wal-mart in rhinelander that gets aquarium stuff sells cruddy stuff (someone in my class last year who found out I keep tanks convinced me to help him, and I found out they screwed him over-the "bio-wheel" filter they sold him didn't even have a wheel!) Pet-co in Wasau even sells royal dottybacks as "docile grammas". Pennywise would probably dose it copper...

Cephkid,
 Arbor Vitae(by Woodruff and Minoqua)
you are in the frozen wasteland
I'm near Milwuakee, and ordered it thru the LFS here.
You could try Gooch's corals in Green Bay, he may be able to
special order for you

as for updates, it took 1 hour to find Odo when I got home.
then I stepped out for a little bit (Pixies concert),
and it took a 1/2 hour to find him/her when I got back from that.

still won't go onto the sand, but it's still getting used to the tank.

Update time.
1.5 weeks later

Odo is hidding all day, and only comes out when the main lights go off.
i reduced the cycle down to 5 hours, with actinics on for 12.

about 1/2 hour after the main light goes off,
Odo starts to peek out of a cave,
then about 1/2 hour after the actinics go out,
then it comes out of the cave and explores.

hopefully, he'll/she'll start to be more active during the day after more time

Glad Odo is doing well! Any pics? As to the lighting, I thought these Bimacs were day active, so as he gets more comfortable, he should start coming out more. Mine got to the point, they couldn't care less if the light was on or not.

The actinics are probably too bright for him - try just a 30W fluorescent bulb and he may come out more during the day. Yes, bimacs are day active!

Thanks,
I didn't think the actinics could be too bright

The actinics are (2) 18w NO tubes
The main lights is a 55 PC 10k bulb.

I'm looking into switching the (2) 18w bulbs to reds and
getting a 50/50 bulb for the PC bulb.

day 13 report

yesterday, I put a ghost shrimp in, Odo came out of hidding in 5 minutes,
and all the ligths were on. :D

I'm hoping that soon she'll get more comfy and start coming out more often.

How long did your octopus take to stop hidding?

those power compact bulbs can be a bit harsh on octo eyes...switching the bulb might not be a bad idea...does your lfs carry caulerpa algae? You might want to put in some of that, gives them something to play with, and shades the tank a little too...

Your octopus should spend a lot of time in his den, but peeking out. They are so good at concealing themselves that you may not even know your octo is there! Once person recently reported that it took him 1/2 hour to find his octo! You learn to scan the rocks, looking for a special outline, a tiny bit of movement - this is developing your "octopus eyes".

They do usually spend more time out as they get older, too.

day 13 update,

changed the 10k PC bulb to a 50/50.
switched out the (2) 18" actinic with (2) 18" "red" bulbs

Those red bulbs sure do look cool, and I'm working
putting them on a switched outlet.

I've tried to add caulerpa, but my Urchin loves to carry it in it's spines.

I'll get pics as soon as I save up enough for a camera.

one time I dropped a staple in the tank,
I searched for about an hour, digging up the sand and everything.
the next day, the urchin was carrying it around like a trophy.

what kinda urchin is it? My blue tuxedo urchin I have in the 90g does that, but the pencil urchin in the 30g doesn't. I think that the "greens-carrier" thing they do is sorta a "walking salad", 'cause the blue urchin seems to wrap himself up, sit down somewhere, and eat.

This urchin behaviour is called "Hatting"...cos they carry stuff like a hat!!! It doesn't appear to be related to diet or camo at least not that I can see! our large urchins often carry one pebble! (the urchins can have a 20cm test diameter and the pebble will be about 1cm diameter.....not much of a disguise!)......'tis a mystery!!!!

day 14 update

urchin is still hatting, but I still can see it

Odo was out, in (new) full light.

I was sooooo excited, untill I noticed that one of the back arms seems
to have been chopped off and is about half the length of the others.
I gotta get a camera soon

Is that normal?
does that mean it's a male?
if not, will it grow back?

Hit a local walmart or osco...you can get disposable digitals now...until you get a mainframe job! Sounds like a great tank!

No, that's not normal. Do you have anything else in your tank (fish, for instance) that could have attackd your little octopus? Or a larger crab?

it seems that most of the time, they do grow back...Dr SOS was commenting about that on another thread a day or so ago...amazing, really, aren't they ?
