Giant squid 'taking over world'

By Simon Benson

GIANT squid are taking over the world, well at least the oceans, and they are getting bigger.

According to scientists, squid have overtaken humans in terms of total bio-mass.

That means they take up more space on the planet than us.

The reason has been put down to overfishing of other species and climate change.

A report in the Australian science journal, Australasian Science, said marine researchers are now in universal agreement that cephalopods have been given an advantage not available to any other sea creature.

Sadly this is a rather old story. The (undated) news.com report refers to an article published in Australian Science in August 2002. You can download a version of the article here:

I'm not convinced. Not that its not possible; rather are they taking into account current shifts and water temp changes which would cause squid to move into waters they avoided before?

Oceanic squid biomass is VERY hard to calculate accurately. Given that these populations are dynamic in their behavior and movement, it can be assumed that squid are simply moving into new niches left behind by the collapsed fisheries and such.

As far as "giant' squid are concerned, I would love to see the Q10 of growth size vs. water temperature any day. Any papers out there?

Maybe they could call the movie "The Life Aquatic With Steve O'shea" and get Bill Murray to play him. :talker:

You know, you could start a whole thread based on 'actors to play Steve O'Shea'

Spilt it up into living and dead...

:P

um...

I always pictured Steve as being a little to kinetic to really be in the range of any dead actor. Perhaps an unusually talented undead actor could pull it off.

WK,

I think Kat preferred Johnny Depp for Steve, and Julia Stiles for Kat (if Kat weren't allowed to appear "as herself," that is).

Oh, and Ving Rhames to play you.

Before we go giving Steve the oscar for "best performance in a tentacled role", may I ask if someone could send me a copy of any papers on this biomass issue? Sounds like fascinating reading.

If there are no copyright issues, could I get a copy by private e- (mail)?

Thanks!

John

That's just plain mean - still, as a good friend of mine says: sometimes you have to be cruel to have fun.

:P

I got fired from my job today - they said my personality was weird. That's ok, I have four more...

Someone has told me this:

:oshea:

Makes him look like Waylon Smithers:

so perhaps a cartoon version would be a better bet than live action?
