View Full Version : Things aren't to good :(
joel_ang Mar 2nd, 2004, 02:01am Just to keep this simple:
I go into LFS,
I come ot of LFS with cuttle a wee bit smaller than the current one.
I get home and acclimate the cuttle,
I release it after sometime.
Original cuttle lunges at new one,
I seperate the two with a feeding stick
Get new one out and put him with the fu man chu.
Me= :(
Any comments or ideas what happened?
Colin Mar 2nd, 2004, 02:26am well,
doesnt seem like your original cuttle wants to share his room with a new one! Perhaps the tank is too small for two territories? Maybe you added another male?
I have never tried putting two cuttles together that didn't 'know' each other but i would have thought it would be tricky, they are not naturally sociable animals
corw314 Mar 2nd, 2004, 05:16am That's too bad..... How is he??? Good luck!!! Hope he's ok!!!
Carol
neptune Mar 2nd, 2004, 08:25am  GL Joel! Sorry to here this first intro didn't go well. But perhaps Colin has some good points!!! GL Again!!!!
Burstsovenergy24 Mar 2nd, 2004, 08:34am So sorry Joel. :(
Do they see each other? Is that better or worse? :(
joel_ang Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:22am Sadly he went into the big fish tank in the sky. Five mins after he was transferred, I gave him a shrimp which he took real fast, he acted normally and then I came here to post, I cam ack an hour later with a black tank.
neptune Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:22am  Oh no Joel, so sorry to hear the news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Burstsovenergy24 Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:23am
I hate it when that happens.
joel_ang Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:35am Who doesn't, I feel kinda guilty that the cuttle didn't have too good an experience with me :(
On a lighter note, I learned something, I think maybe the original cuttle had already established its territory and hence wanted to defend it. Maybe the cuttles at the LFS were ok with each other since they arrived at the same time?
neptune Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:45am Joel, out of curiosity, what size tank is it, and if you said and missed it soory!!
Burstsovenergy24 Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:46am Thats how it is with some fish. You put the least argessive thing in first to establish its territory.
NickA5582 Mar 2nd, 2004, 04:19pm
I'm so sorry, Joel.
Melissa Mar 2nd, 2004, 05:52pm Sorry to hear this, Joel. And surprised, as you've done so well with your tanks. Sounds like you have another fierce cuttle at home.
Melissa
wow, i have to say i envy some of you guys who can walk into a store and walk out with a cuttle, ive been trying to get one for almost a year now, and so far im no closer to haveing one :(
Nancy Mar 2nd, 2004, 09:46pm But now, rc, you have an exceptional octopus!
joel_ang Mar 3rd, 2004, 01:54am Don't worry rc, I envy you guys who can get bimacs delivered to their front door :( I do get cyanea but they're just too big.
cthulhu77 Mar 3rd, 2004, 07:37am On a similar note, a local pet store owner put a bichir in with his discus...now he has a fat bichir and little discus bits...(diskettes?)
I have never had luck introducing new fish/cephs into an established tank without first re-arranging all of the decoration...this seems to "start-from-scratch" all of the territorial behaviour...maybe that would solve your situation?
Don't beat yourself up too much...happens. :(
Greg
joel_ang Mar 3rd, 2004, 08:13am That kinda makes sense, but I don't think I'll try too soon, I guess when this guy passes, I'll get two at the same time. :)
cthulhu77 Mar 3rd, 2004, 02:24pm Now, now...don't go getting all LOGICAL on us ! :D
Greg
Colin Mar 3rd, 2004, 04:58pm 2 is never a good idea either!!!!! LOL
no seriously, one will always be stronger than the other and eventually out compete the other... if you want to do it, you need to get at least 6 and spread out the agression... okay, you'll need a damn big tank, but i think that's the only way forward with cuttles...
:bugout:
joel_ang Mar 4th, 2004, 01:28am Thats true, foolishly kept two baby arowanas in the same tank and they fought like there was no tomorrow. Then again, the more cuttles the higher the chance of getting a female, but that also means more ink.
Colin Mar 4th, 2004, 02:32am yep, because when they have a little fal out they ink and even cuttles at the other side of the tank who had nothing to do with the fight might ink too, though this skittishness can be a sign of water being too hot.
joel_ang Mar 4th, 2004, 03:10am It really is very hot right now, outside is about 30C , Its supposed to go higher towards may 8) . Thanks to the great invention called air-con, Im typing in a comfortable 24C. I heard that if there were a few in the same tank, if one got frightened and inked, the others might do the same.
Colin Mar 4th, 2004, 12:38pm its about 4 degrees C for me :(
Outside i mean... about 18 in
joel_ang Mar 5th, 2004, 01:43am 18 isn't too bad but any colder and I'll just sit here and freeze. :goofysca:
cthulhu77 Mar 5th, 2004, 06:21am Hey, enough! I may have to wear a JACKET this morning ! It is only supposed to be 78 today...what is this world coming to?????
Greg
joel_ang Mar 5th, 2004, 07:03am BUt to make things worse here, I got about 100% humidity to contend with, its 85 f, and its nighttime. :x (thats me being steamed[alive])
NickA5582 Mar 5th, 2004, 04:27pm I've got a nice cool 30 degrees Fahrenheit and had about 8 inches of snow fall from last night to now.
:feet:
joel_ang Mar 5th, 2004, 06:56pm
cthulhu77 Mar 5th, 2004, 10:09pm Hey, what you need to do is just curl up with a nice cerveza and build a PT boat !
(well...that's what i do when I am down...)
Greg
speaking of Singapore...what IS the national/native beer there? I know Kingfisher is Indian, and Singha and others come from Thailand...you must have some fantastic brews there...I would like to order some from our distributor...any good titles?
Melissa Mar 6th, 2004, 01:23am Tiger beer? I'm sure it's Tiger, but I haven't been there, so there's no reason for me to know. Must go try ti sometime...
Melissa
Colin Mar 6th, 2004, 05:06am I think Tiger is from Singapore too... gets sold in Eastern restaurants here
cthulhu77 Mar 6th, 2004, 06:35am Hmmm... I shall have to see if I can order some...(on a suprised note, absinthe is legal again here...!)
Thanks for the info!
Greg
joel_ang Mar 6th, 2004, 07:25am I'm not too sure on Tiger but I know Singapore Sling is from Singapore :D
neptune Mar 6th, 2004, 09:07am on a suprised note, absinthe is legal again here...!)
we had some delievered to fl the other week. simply awesome experience! :bugout:
WhiteKiboko Mar 6th, 2004, 09:26am best i could find was only one brewer that i heard of in Singapore, APB, who does Tiger and its relatives....
joel_ang Mar 7th, 2004, 06:47am Tiger's relatives?
Ok more bad news, I was expecting this but here goes, The bandensis isn't eating anymore, Im afraid its sesenence, the stuff he released earlier could have been eggs or sperm packets so I guess the end is near.
corw314 Mar 7th, 2004, 06:49am So sorry to hear Joel. How long have you had him?
Carol
joel_ang Mar 7th, 2004, 06:55am Only Three months, but I got him when he was quite big ( about 4-4.5cm Ml)
neptune Mar 7th, 2004, 12:38pm Joel,
Hopefully, it not sesenence, but just a shock from the previous situation. How long has it been since it ate? I really wish you all the best here!!!
joel_ang Mar 8th, 2004, 04:06am About 3 days. I don't think its related to the incident since, it ate well for a few days after that. I tried once more today without success and he's growing rather thin, so I guess anytime soon.
neptune Mar 8th, 2004, 02:35pm  I will still hope for the best!!!
Colin Mar 8th, 2004, 03:11pm sorry to heat that Joel, at least its normally quite fast
:(
joel_ang Mar 9th, 2004, 08:04am Quite fast it was :( Last night I noticed that he had let out quite alot of ink, he was still swimming at the top, however he inked on more time, he then swam to a corner, I could see viscous ink still hanging from his siphon. After that his eyes scrunched up, his fin stopped moving and he went to ceph heaven :(
Colin Mar 9th, 2004, 02:35pm A shame :(
corw314 Mar 9th, 2004, 04:28pm I'm sorry!!!! :(
Carol
Jean Mar 9th, 2004, 04:38pm
Sorry to hear that Joel
J
Nancy Mar 9th, 2004, 04:40pm Sorry about your loss.
These short ceph lives are hard to take.
Nancy
NickA5582 Mar 9th, 2004, 05:25pm
Burstsovenergy24 Mar 9th, 2004, 10:53pm Joel, Im sorry.
joel_ang Mar 10th, 2004, 04:30am I think I'll try to make it a point to only get the smaller cuttles, the big ones die to fast. But I'll stop the ceph keeping for now, my exams are coming up.
