View Full Version : Inklet Update!!!
corw314 Feb 22nd, 2004, 03:55pm It's been almost 24 hours since Inklets arrival! I spent last night and part of this morning running around to LFS trying to find reasonably priced hermitcrabs. Know what his favorite food is? Local snails Jess & I caught in the summer/fall!! Luckily we still have around 30 of them in a feeder tank! So far he's eaten 3 of them! Next week I am getting fiddler crabs from Aquaculture, so I should be set with food for awhile! Lil Pumpkin eats 1 crab a day with frozen prawn thrown in here and there!
Inklet has been up the eheim tube, under the bubble filter, and digging in all corners of the tank! I even found him balancing on the plastic plant in his tank. Looked like he was bouncing on it! I have found if I hold a flashlight to take pictures, he doesnt get freaked. I don't want to use the flash yet.
He's always sitting in a spot where he can keep an eye on us! I have started tapping on the tank lightly so he gets used to knowing I'm there when he hears this sound. Lil P comes out when I tap on his now!
Jim emailed me to make sure everything was ok. I am waiting for his reply to see if I too have a sibling!! How many would that make?
So far so good!!!
Carol
neptune Feb 22nd, 2004, 04:12pm Carol,
He sounds as mischievous as Ochi!! I too have notticed no fear of the flashlight. Me thinks its because naturally they are a shallow water species.
My count has the sibs at 3 so far, but perhaps more. Have we started a poll yet? If so I missed it!
Ochi digs for clams, it's really cool to watch, even if he doesn't have many to find. He usually eats everything given in round 1.
Glad to hear Inklet is adjusting so fast! 8)
NickA5582 Feb 22nd, 2004, 06:52pm Glad to hear Inklet and Ochi are doing ok. :)
Got any pics of him, Carol?
corw314 Feb 23rd, 2004, 06:21am No good pictures yet. Think I already posted this one on another board. He's a little shy right now!
Thought you all would like to read what Jim from Octopets wrote back:
"I'm glad he arrived in good shape, yes he is from the same batch as the other members and anyone who has order in the last 6 weeks. Yours was the last octopus that I will be selling from that batch. the rest(20 octo's) will be raised to adults mated with octo's from other batches and lay eggs of their own."
Pretty amazing he keeps 20 babies from a batch! Looks like I got the last sibling!!!!
:D Carol
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:31am Very 8)
BOE is going to be upset, I think he was really trying to get a sib this week!
Colin Feb 23rd, 2004, 12:56pm im sure arms could be twisted :)
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 01:07pm I would have to agree with you Colin. Jim is a good supplier, however, if not, I don't want to be around when BOE finds out :yelling: .
BOE - you should call Jim today! I know you are shooting for 2-29, but I would get him to hold one till next week if possible, if you still want a sib that is!
Colin Feb 23rd, 2004, 01:08pm if not, I don't want to be around when BOE finds out :yelling: .
yeah, we'd have about 3 million posts in one day
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 06:46pm
Ill try to order tomorrow. Ill run some tests soon but last I checked the nitrates were high. :( Also Im not sure if I can be here when they deliver.

Wonder why they call me Bursts Ov Energy? :heee:
corw314 Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:11pm How high? Is everything else stable? I heard it's ammonia and nitrite that is the problem.
Carol
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:20pm About 40. Ill check the nitrite and ammo after the next commercial of the Simpsons. I want my Octo! :(
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:48pm Ever wonder why they call me BOE
:roflmao:
40 is high but bearable, when was the last water change. Dont freak on that!
Have you gotten to check the other params yet?
Also Im not sure if I can be here when they deliver.
Just deliever here, always ready to help out. :P
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:51pm Nitrite - 0
Ammo - 0
Im gonna try to get some distilled water tonight. Ive really never done a water change because there was no reason to.
I have a plan...since octopets sells to fishsupply maybe I can get the sibling from there! I hope this works...
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:55pm Call Jim @ Octopets he is in CA.
Params look stable, but there is always a reason to do water changes, are the scarlet and brittle not in this tank?
Do a H2O change and you should be doing better. Plan on those at least every 2-3 weeks max!!
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 07:59pm I know I know. Yeah the crabs and brittle are in this tank but I never did a real water change. I added some water when it got low in the tank. I do think I changed some at the 6th or so, though. :|
Im gonna call him.
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:00pm What is your salinity? Have you checked it?
corw314 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:00pm I remember Hermin my first Octopus, after I found this site, took my water to my LFS and the nitrate was off the charts!! Deadly to fish, but Hermin had existed in my old tank for 4 months at that point!
I did weekly water changes to bring it down. 40 is not bad!! Good idea on Fish Supply, if you want I could email jim and beg him for one more!!!!!
Carol
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:04pm Carol,
Lets get him. I think like Colin said arms could be twisted. OUCH
Nancy Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:05pm Yes, check pH and salinity. These should be checked frequently.
It's a good idea to have saltwater with the correct parameters already made up and ready for a water change, just in case.
As for the siblings, you might be able to reserve a bimac and have it shipped a bit later.
Nancy
NickA5582 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:08pm I think I read octos can stand up to 50 nitrate without effects on them?
My mom used to have an octo named Hermin, lived for two days in a bucket and now is in a jar of fermeldahyde somewhere in Texas.
Good luck getting your bimac, BOE!
corw314 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:13pm I just placed a pleading email!!!!!
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:14pm  Poor Hermin I hope that bucket didn't put in him the jar
I have read 100 is tolerable but not recommended. They do have high tolerances in certain areas.
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:16pm Thanks Carol!
I'll call if I have to we talk a few times a wekk, but I understand if he want to keep a brood stock! :?
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:27pm Good idear (I dont really say that :heee: ) with the email.
Here's the message Im sending him:
Subject: Future customer...
Body: Im going to buy an octo from you in a few days and have a question.
Lots of my friends of TONMO.com have recently been purchasing octos from a set batch. One person said that that was the last octo you would send and Im wondering if you can sell me one from that batch. I would really appreciate it. Otherwise I would feel left out. :(
Sincerely, Jesse Cummins
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:28pm That is definately a good plea!!!!! :D
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:32pm 8) Thanks. Oh and by the way, I went down to clean out my 5 gallon buckets (Im getting them filled tomorrow) and discovered I still had about 6 gallons left! :D So I changed the water. Nitrate update soon! :D
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:50pm 8)
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 08:51pm 20 PPM!
I dont know how it halved but that's what it looks like! :D
I hope the pleas work... :?
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:01pm Water changes work!!
Test salinty and Ph and you are fine. Those inhabitants you have make a mess.................octos are worse!!!
Keep it up and you will be fine!
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:04pm Should I take out the mollies and give em to my Oscar or let the octo eat em? Im slightly biased to giving them to my O because hes hungry.
NickA5582 Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:29pm But your octo would like a welcome snack....
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:34pm
That it probably would. But, I dont know for sure that these mollies have no copper in them. My O however, likes a little heavy metal. :heee:
How can you resist his hungry face? (http://whirlwindmissions.smugmug.com/photos/1668874-S.jpg)
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:37pm Good point! Leave it to the punks like Stalin to do that work!
Respect the 8)
NickA5582 Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:46pm Awwwwwwww.....
That makes me wanna set up my freshwater tank again, fishsitter killed cichlid #1 (little blue and black stripey guy) and didn't turn on the light, killing my plants. Came home and turned on the light, scared the crap out of my albino cichlid and he went whoosh across the tank to his cave and made a big cut on his side, down went cichlid #2. :(
I want to order a sibling now too, but that would be really pushing it, and I have no tank to put him in (125 and/or 55 coming soon) since my 20 gallon is filled with baby dwarf seahorses and would be octo popcorn.
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 23rd, 2004, 09:47pm Dude, that sucks. :(
He replyed quickly!
From Jim:
Jesse,
O.K. you can have the last octopus that I sell from that batch. Remind me when you order.
Thanks
Jim

Thanks Nick!
tonmo Feb 23rd, 2004, 10:01pm 8) Congrats!! Good luck!
neptune Feb 23rd, 2004, 10:46pm Wonderful!! Thats great BOE! The 8) will be a sib!
Glad you pulled that off.
And.... Nick I am sure eventually this whole site will have a batch of sibs at one point or another. Think 6 degrees to Kevin, well nevermind
Colin Feb 24th, 2004, 05:23am anyone know what the final total is for the siblings????
corw314 Feb 24th, 2004, 05:31am Congrats BOE!!!! Is the count 4 when yours comes?
sideways Feb 24th, 2004, 10:03am B.O.E. is a lucky S.O.B.

...Congrats
neptune Feb 24th, 2004, 04:20pm we really should do a poll. but I have it a 4 when BOE gets his, and there are few others out there uncertain. Hopefully, we will get confirmation on whether they are or not.
joel_ang Feb 25th, 2004, 06:23am Not sure If BOE's will be a sibling but I guess we can consider him one :)
neptune Feb 25th, 2004, 08:12am Joel, Jim at octopets has said he will send BOE out a sib
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 25th, 2004, 05:10pm Not sure If BOE's will be a sibling but I guess we can consider him one :)
