Congratulations! And welcome to Ochi!

Did Ochi arrive in good condition?

And that's an unusual name - how did you come up with "Ochi"?

thanks everyone. he/she arrived great. nothing at all to indicate worries. Just added tank water to acclimate and he is just jetting around playing on the ledges that the bag creates in the water.

How did I come up with Ochi.....(Long and Short version)
1. Wife and I were married in Ocho Rios Jamaica
2. Ocho Rios means - Eight Rivers in Jamaican
3. Ochi is there native slang name for Ocho Rios
so.... Ochi is slang for eight

figured it was fitting for an octo

OCHI the OCTO :D

neptune
Feb 13th, 2004, 12:22pm
Excellent condition. No ink in bag no signs of stress, good color. :D

Once he was acclimated I let him crawl onto my very clean hand ( which he did very happily) and gently lead him into his new home.

Watched Ochi explore for almost an hour before I had to come back to work. I miss waching him already,....oh well 4 hours to go before I can go back home. :P

me too scouse, I was actually concerned of dumping any of the shipping water into Ochi's tank, so I saw no other way(was not using a net!!!!!) but he agreed and crawled right on for a ride. Hopefully, he will always be this accepting. I believe it can only go up from here!! :D

Thanks btw on the name complimnet! 8)

definitley agree on the only way is up, if he's acceptin your hand now, its only positive, suppose you've just gotta keep that bond goin an build.

Nancy's relationship with Ollie was amazin by the sound of things, so hopefully others can discover even more, im sure its not unrivalled just the way she documented it so well. i suppose sittin next to the little-un helped as well.

keep us informed on how you get on in that department :D

you too sideways !!! :D

you should both try an do some similar little experiments of some sort an see what happens, if personalities effect response's etc

god i cant wait until the clocks stops tickin an dthe world stops spinnin.......... an mine arrives!!! 5-6months yet.... :D

Thanks for the congrats. Where are the virtual octo cigars to pass around at moments like this :smoke:

Right now I just cant wait for this last hour of work to pass so i can go see the little guy, and turn the lights on. Left them off for him to get used to his new home comfortably.

I guess thats the advantage of getting captive bred animals, they get used to us and play with us earlier. They can probably withstand shipping better too.

:D Well everyone! If you could only see Neptune with his new play mate right now. When we first got home tonight he was hiding in a little dungeon he created. After a while he decided to come out and let Neptune know that he was not too happy being disturbed! He got over it very quick though and decided to have some fun exploring the tank walls. Neptune tells me that Ochi has never experienced glass on a tank wall before :) It was very obvious as he was like a little child learning how to ride a bike, skirting up and falling down just as quickly. After a few minutes he got the hang of it and it was very amusing to watch him play! We are having fun already. Sorry so long- just excited!

This little guy really came in really healthy no problems at all with shipping.

Carol loved all your posts about interaction with your octo. Hope to have as many stories myself.

BOE - although my hand was a mutually agreeable mode of transportation to get out of his shipping container, he has yet to punch that ticket again.

I fed Ochi a clam tonight, but noticed he had already found 1 blue leg hermit, in his journeys. I have to say he is quite shy, but I am amazed at how accepting he has been! :D :D :D :D :D

Ochi is hanging on the right wall of the open hole. He is slightly greyish/brown (atleast for this pic - ) and basically at 3 o'clock if looking through the hole. He is small! Hope that helps.

Sorry about the quality but he moved after three of this pose, and the rest of the action shots were BAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

I will get better wit hthis camera, just bought a new digi just for all these fun times :D

It does and I did not react quick enough. Was not planning on seeing him then, was actually taking pics of my reef

sorry that another photo

The live rock I have for him has an insane amount of growth. There is a algae strand infront, but those red dots are coraline growth. Wish I could have placed this piece in my reef as it is brimming with life, but thought it had to many cool spots for an octo. Ochi does love playing trough it so it was a good decision :)

Hello Everyone-

Ochi is doing great!!! neptune was not home last night and I think he was a little sad that he could not be home playing with his new friend. All went well and I have to say that I finally think he is coming around with me now. In the beginning he would only respond to Neptune. Last night, he danced along the glass for me and played on top of the ledge of the boat and in the algea. When I gently placed my finger on the glass as Neptune did the day before when he tried guiding Ocho to his food- he imediately repsonded as if he thought I was prompting him to look for food. Needless to say- he is getting more and more curious and we are loving it!

Very nice pics!!!! Bimacs have such great personalities, I miss that somewhat.....The tent. could just be a abnormality if it is split, can ya get a better pic? Just wait till he eats from your hand,,WOW what a great feeling that is

neptune
Feb 18th, 2004, 08:15am
He does, he is a Pirate. Has a huge rock full of crevices he loves more, right now. But he is an explorer. And such a ham. He knows that camera, and wants to take a pic of me I think. :P

He has not eaten out of my hand, but we are already really close to that. Everyday he does his flash dance, when I come home telling me he is hungry. Then when I put the clams in his tentacles go nuts. He is not scared of my arm or hand at all. It will happen soon, and I am definatly waiting for the day he actually grabs it.

I think Joel is right about the shadow. The split is not something I have seen before or after this shot, so good eyes Joel! oh and BTW - Sphene, this Calcium Titanium Silicate forms flattened wedge-shaped crystals; massive, compact and lamellar forms are also found. It occurs as an accessory mineral in igneous rocks

neptune
Feb 21st, 2004, 09:57am
Thanks, been reading on your Jetta's Egg Saga, sounds exciting!!!

Ochi is doing great, he is getting ever more curious of exactly what is going on. I was worried at first because I placed his tank in the center of my house so you can see on all sides. Not really the center but between an open archway. He seems to really like this location, he scoots all over looking in this and that room. I leave the front window open for him, and it must be strange for him to be able to sit and look out into the world at eye level :goofysca:

But everyday I come home and he is in the same spot looking out front and then he want to play or eat.

Thanks for asking and good luck with thoose eggs!! and the feeding of Jetta

That sounds like an excellent place for Ochi, lots to watch. Octopuses like to be where there's some activity, more than I originally thought.

Maybe Ochi will be like Ollie, and in 5 or 6 months want to climb out and see what the outside world is really like.

Nancy

joel_ang
Feb 22nd, 2004, 04:09am
But we'll just have to hope that this curiousity would be satisfied, and fast. Octopus seem to like attention but can become nervous with too many unfamiliar faces around.

neptune
Feb 22nd, 2004, 10:03am
He has blown me away!! I would definately say he loves his view.

Yesterday I tried the feeding stick and a little fish for the first time. Have been giving him clams, and crabs, but we were haveing fresh fish for din, so I thought what the hey. As soon as it went in he was on the stick like he knew that thing has food. :o

Fun little wrestling match and tug of war! However, he spit the fish out after eating it and it was a small piece.

But this morn as I got up, he was hanging out on his ship, and I had a few shell to janitor for him. Next thing I know he is on my hand like that stick. Didn't bite, but scared the pucky out of me! I didn't yank my hand away, but let him explore and he grabbed on like 3 times. I had to him a clam after that.

I did not expect him to be so adjusted and used to me this quickly, but we have spent a lot of time together already.

Sorry for the novel, but this is too cool!!! 8) :D 8)

Nancy
Feb 22nd, 2004, 11:40am
Ochi is doing really well. If he's exploring your hand already, you should become great pals pretty quickly. I'd love to see a pic of Ochi hanging out of the ship.

Please continue with the detailed reports (you and all the other octo owners, too). They're fun to read and give us valuable information. Don't worry about boring us - you won't! :)

You might try a bit of fresh scallop in feeding him. Little bimacs seem to prefer that to fish. Fresh shrimp are excellent, but are hard to come by.

Feb 24th, 2004, 05:32pm
BOE, before you order this sibling, you'd better have a plan for how you're going to feed it.

You may have to ship in fresh shrimp and crabs, and we have the names of good companies that will provide this type of live food.

Are you going to start with the clams and amphipods from Octopets?

Nancy

Burstsovenergy24
Feb 24th, 2004, 06:20pm
Im going to get the Octopet kit. It comes with 200 clams. I have a small 2.5 gallon that I could use, or a rubbermaid container. Ill probably get amphipods too. I just emailed the guy that runs this (http://www.tonmo.com/store/shrimp.php), about his prices.

:)

I also have lots of bluelegged crabs, some scarlets, and some emerald crabs.

neptune
Feb 24th, 2004, 08:17pm
Colin,
Thanks. :D
I have kept it for about 11 months. I feed it everyday, when it is awake usually early evening, when I feed the rest of the corals in my reef, and Ochi too  .

It actually gets fed the same mix I make for my corals - brine, zoo, coral dna, etc. he has trived and grown this way since day one. It is very amazing to watch him react and respond so much like a coral, yet be so completly different.

Good point Nancy, BOE I put my clams in my sump. They are beneficially to your system!

Burstsovenergy24

Also, I dont have any sand in the sump. :(

neptune
Feb 24th, 2004, 09:09pm
Thats ok, heaters and pumps shouldn't be a problem. I place mine on the top of the sponge and I actually have my skimmer facing the top of this sponge as it help to reduce bubbles. I have not had a problem with loss at all!

An Ochi update, he has become quite active exporing both the tank and my hand. He really likes to crawl up the corner to the top of the tank, and let me give him a clam, or four.

Nancy you may be right about him wanting to sit up there like Ollie). :D

It is quite a unique experience to first have him want to touch all over my hand. I actually didn't know if he was going decide I might just be a really big clam. But we have gotten used to the concept, however, he has tried to pull my hand into his den with all his might a few times . It cute, because they actually have a lot of strength to be so small.

I have attached a colorful shot of Ochi I noticed early the other day before work. 8)

Yep this Sunday! I might even get it on Saturday! He said it costed 15 more dollars for Saturday shipment though, than on a weekday, do you think it costs extra for Sunday too?

Great pix!
