Here in the 'Burque KASA Fox 2 gratefully braodcasts the Simpsons twice daily. Last nights 10:00 episode was the one where Marge is in the musical version of Streetcar Named Desire called Oh! Streetcar.

During the opening sequence, the "couch gag" featured the Simpsons Family hopping on the couch, which promptly ate them as it morphed into a huge octopus like creature (its face looked more like a fish, but it had the tentacles)

Also, The two aliens featured on many episodes are also very octo like. Although these aliens oft wreak havoc, they are somewhat sympathetic characters, displaying emotion and what not.

Thats my general sighting for the day! :heee:

I don't know if I am overexposed to the media or what, but here is my general sighting for the day.

On last nights Jeopardy, during the jeopardy round, the following clue was given ( I don't remember the catagory, it was somethign like "size matters" this clue is paraphrased but accurate)

This underwater animal has the largest eye of any animal in the world

The answer

GIANT SQUID!!!! :squid:

I was listening in the kitchen while cooking, head the clue, and shouted out ARCHITECTUETHIS DUX!!! Then I wondered if the judges would even know what I was talking about.

No worries, Lith! Alex Trebek probably would've picked up on that -- and if not, "What" would've been the biggest damn letter protest ever launched by a bunch of online ceph geeks!

Re THE SIMPSONS: Let's not forget the Sea Cap'n's nemesis, The White Giant Squid (as in "Aaaargh, Squiddy!") -- who, like the Cap'n himself, periodically "surfaces" for a cameo on the show.

Yet another general sighting from the world of Jeopardy. You know how after the first commercial break they have a little "meet the contestants" spot where they each get about 30 seconds to say something? Well, last night one of the female challengers most exciting moment in her whole life was when her son got "attacked" by an octo. She had friends at the aquarium in Indiana Who took her and young son behind the scenes to check out the octo tank. Whilst leaning too close, one of them wrapped a tentacle around her sons wrist. She and the aquarium employee removed it quickly, although she said it had quite a grip. And thank goodness, her son was spared!
A bit over dramatized if you ask me, but then again, I cannot comment on a mothers love type of feeling. Y'know, that crazy instinct that must kick in if your offspring is in the sleightest danger from an I'm sure well meaning and simply curious octo.

As a mom, I'd have to say it depends upon the age of the child. Assuming we're not talking about a Blue-Ring, if it were an older child or adolescent I don't think I'd panic unless the octo was clearly attempting to bite. Perhaps I'm anthropomorphizing again (I tend to do that when it comes to critters I like!) but I'd interpret the "gesture" as an act of friendly curiosity on the part of the octo.

I had a similar experience, though admittedly there was a pane of glass between me and the octo. Years ago at the NY Aquarium, I was looking at the octopus exhibit to find the shy little guy (or gal) hiding in a rock crevice at the back of the tank. Just to see what would happen, I placed my palm against the glass, and amazingly, the octo -- still in its little hiding place -- reached out with one arm and placed it exactly where my hand was, as if trying to "shake hands". I thought that was neat!

Still, if an octopus in a tank seized my young child or baby by the wrist, I'd probably act just as the mother in the anecdote did. There's something to be said about hominid maternal instinct too.... :D

Another sighting from a Simpsons episode: In "The Secret War of Lisa Simpson" (the military school episode) a sound wave shatters a tank and an octo launches itself at Professor Frink, and wraps firmly around his head... but if memory serves, the octo is purple so it might be a tad tough to identify it :) but what can you say about a show where a portion of the town has blue hair? and TaningiaDanae, you forgot to mention Capt. McAllister tells squidy he 'was only after the gold in your belly' maybe we should ask our resident scientists if theyve ever found gold inside giant squids :) as for kang and kodos, theyre a tad inept and might give octos a bad name...plus they slobber too much.... as you might be able to tell, im a bit of a fan of the show and ill give a yell if i see any more cephs...

ARGH!! i knew as soon as i left the site i'd remember another Ceph sighting.... from "Homer Badman" (the sexual harassment episode) when Homer launches into his 'Under the Sea' song, but before he eats all the critters, Marge can be seen playing an Octo like a harp....

"There'll be no accusations, only friendly crustaceans....Under the Seeeeeeeeeea"

TaningiaDanae, you forgot to mention Capt. McAllister tells squidy he 'was only after the gold in your belly' maybe we should ask our resident scientists if theyve ever found gold inside giant squids :)

Ah yes, how could I forget that classic line! :) Apparently Squiddy was a forgiving sort because I seem to recall that he and the cap'n were standing with their arm (and tentacle) around each other's shoulders in that episode. It could have been worse -- if Monty Burns got wind of that gold rumor, Squiddy would've been the entree at the next big Springfield Calamari Fry!

BTW, what does "Kiboko" mean?

another simpsons ceph sighting.... in one of the tracy ulman shorts, then shown again on "the simpsons 138th episode spectacular" bart is imagining himself as jacques costeau in the bath tub, and is "attacked" by an octo floating past... i really probably watch that show too much, but oh well, i have a soft spot for satire, especially when it includes itself

I thought of another one too! On the episode where Homer joins the Navy Reserve and is unwittingly put in charge of a nuclear sub, there is a split second scene where they show the ocean surrounding the sub, and along with other creatures, a giant squid hovers right next to it - looking a bit menacing.

Hey there, Kiboko --

Cool! I love hippopotami (sp?), and come to think of it I recently saw a show on ANIMAL PLANET about a young zookeeper who had a real rapport with the hippo in her charge, coincidentally named Kiboko too (the hippo, not the zookeeper!). She (the zookeeper, not the hippo!) loved everything pertaining to hippos, and wore little hippo-figure earrings and pendant, the way many of us would do with ceph stuff.

The amazing thing was the hippo's gentleness with her. While it was being hand-fed (hay or grass) by the zookeeper, it allowed her to affectionately pat the roof of its mouth, which normally would've been a good way to lose an arm! From what I've heard, more people in Africa are killed by hippos than by crocodiles, and in fact crocs have sometimes been literally snapped in two by the massive mammals.

Another interesting bit of trivia -- it is the opinion of many Biblical scholars that the "Behemoth", described so majestically in the Book of Job, was a reference to the hippopotamus:

http://webhome.idirect.com/~donlong/monsters/Html/Behemoth.htm

Now, is everybody here prepared to go on "Jeopardy"?

You certainly do! Before it's too late, I suggest that you immediately switch to something more profound and intellectual, like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. Remember to take careful notes, because next week there will be a pop quiz consisting of ten multiple choice questions, four essays, and a test of your ability to sing both the show's theme and the "F-U-N" song.

You will not know in advance what the test will cover, but I can tell you that it would be advisable to memorize (a) the characteristics which distinguish Squidward from an actual cephalopod; (b) what poriferan species, if any, are perfectly square-shaped and wear pants: (c) why a squirrel from Texas would want to live underwater; (d) whether copepods are really the embodiment of evil; and (e) how come Patrick Star sounds exactly like "Dauber" on the TV sitcom COACH.

Have fun....

You have done well, Grasshopper! Your essay is most graciously accepted and will be applied to your final grade. As for the other questions, here are the correct answers, with which you may grade your own test on an honor system:

a) Six arms, a big nose, a shirt, and a clarinet.
b) Have you tried looking in the clothes dryer?
c) The higher, the fewer.
d) According to Plankton's computer, 1% evil and 99% hot gas.
e) Bill Fagerbakke needed the money.

same here...i had been debating/price shopping it for a while, but got just got it....

ok... like you mentioned the giant squid attacks the window and gets its arms into the underwater apt in various places in "I, Roommate".... In "Love's Labours Lost in Space," an octo with tusks is hanging off the remains of the planet vergon 6, which exploded.... In "Fishful of Dollars" Leela makes referrence to going to the Squid Fights.....On the director's commentary track on "My 3 Suns," Matt Groening admits Dr. Zoidberg has some definite ceph influences (among them his tentacle-like mustache thingy and the ink sac we find out about in later episodes) .... actually in that episode is one of my favorite parts:

Fry: "It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched tv. But then the winter came and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns! And also, he got a racecar! Is any of this getting through to you?"

although they arent in the first season, in "The Deep South," Fry and his mermaid friend watch a giant squid wrestle a sperm whale and fry has a pennant cheering on the squid...."In That's Loberstertainment" Zoidberg writes a personal letter in his own ink...and in "Insane in the Mainframe":

Fry: I really a....
Zoidberg: Squid?
Fry: Human!
Zoidberg: Also Good.

Hey y'all! There is something to be said for sweet alcoholic drinks. Speaking as one who has had four glasses (though admittedly not too big) of Manischewitz at a single meal, once a year, since young adulthood, I have developed a fondness for sweet wines as well as dessert-y cordials such as Chambord, Creme de Menthe, Creme de Cacao, Bailey's Irish Cream, Vandermint, etc.

Yo, John, if you're ever around Noo Yawk way, mix me up one of those sweet saké drinks and I will buy you the animé film of your choice from Amazon....

actually, i blend my own type of wine with an extremely easy recipe (what will that get me? :) ) take a fifth (or 1.5L if your thirsty) of blackberry Manischewitz (the other flavours arent too friendly, especially the concord grape) and mix it with an equal amount of wild vines blackberry... the wild vines will bring the alcohol down to 9% (from 12) and the sweetness and mellowness of the two wines will even each other out....

Taking it up to '11',

Shalom and Konichiwa, WK! Send a batch of the stuff up here, and we can market it as "Mesonychoschewitz" -- smooth, strong, plenty of bite, and preservative-free (no ammonia).

Kinda reminds me of the time my college buddy Marie's brother Marco was on leave from the USAF, and mixed up a batch of something called "Air Force Bash" for Marie and her friends. The recipe involved dumping a little of every liquor and/or wine in the house into a big mixing bowl, and then chugging it. (Marco said the one he made wasn't completely authentic, because the real thing had to be mixed in a large, unwashed garbage can -- to enhance the flavor, of course.) I wasn't there, which I guess was a mixed blessing: I missed all the hilarity, but then again I didn't have to puke my guts out the next morning either.

Hmmm, do you suppose we could get Steve-O' and Kat to mix up some "TONMO Bash" in an unwashed dissection sink?

Not everything I drink is sweet, my old standby is the Absolut and tonic.

However, when I first became of legal age, I "invented" a drink which I named after myself - the Veronica, which is sweet but not too sweet, there is also a variation called the Holy Veronica:

To make just one Veronica
Take 2 oz ( or more depending on yr taste) absolut vodka (or your favorite brand)
1 oz Frangelico
and two International Delights hazelnut creamers
Serve over ice

To make a pitcher of Veronica's I use Rice Dream Vanilla Rice milk instead of the international delights

You can use flavoured vodka if you like - orange is nice

The Holy Veronica is the same as above, but you stir and dissolve a spoonfull or more of nutella in the ricemilk or creamer before adding it to the Vodka

Ummmmm sugary and alcoholic, just like me!

Sounds good, except I'm allergic to hazelnuts. Can you use Bailey's Irish Cream and butterscotch syrup instead? Then you could call that variation a "Fra An-Jill-Ico" :heee:

Leela rocks! She is one of my favorite animated heroes. Aside from that cool cyclops eye, kick-ass attitude, and voice suspiciously reminiscent of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN's Peg Bundy (yeah, I know it's really Katey Sagal), her full name is actually an in-joke for classical music fans.

In the episode where she became the world's worst baseball player, you may remember that when she enters the stadium the announcer identifies her as "Turanga Leela". Believe it or not, this is a reference to the Turangalila (pronounced the same way) Symphony by 20th-century composer Olivier Messiaen -- a massive work which blends Hindu spirituality with modern sounds, featuring the rarely-used Ondes Martinot (an eerie-sounding electronic instrument similar to the Theremin).

Now for those of you who think I'm just showing off -- damn straight I am! :heee: However, someone I used to know owned a record of the Turangalila Symphony. (Record, what's that? Yep, I've dated myself again.) Anyway, I heard it a couple of times, and the name -- which I believe means "play of God" in Sanskrit -- stuck with me. Obviously the FUTURAMA writers thought they could slip that one past their viewers, but they didn't reckon on the extreme nerdiness of TONMO members, especially that of a were-squid often referred to by her friends as "Cliff Clavin".

i think futurama has the most overeducated writing staff around (not that its a bad thing) even moreso than the simpsons.... i think they have one or two physics phds in there and probably a dose of ivy leaguers like simpsons, but that doesnt say much by itself (WK being one of those quite unimpressed with a name on a diploma - known many a rich moron) but it can often attract sharp minds....

i think i lost my focus a bit, but no big deal :)

WK, you are too good! I didn't think anyone still remembered that hysterical "Jeopardy" episode of CHEERS. (And I still think Cliffie should've gotten credit for his answer :P ) When Nick at Nite started running CHEERS again, I would sometimes be glued to the screen till the wee hours of the a.m. It got to the point where I knew some of the scripts by heart, but they never ceased to be funny. My friends and I used to get into prolonged discussions of who was the better comic actress, Shelley Long or Kirstie Alley (actually, I think Rhea Perlman had them both beat), and how Bebe Neuwirth managed to keep a straight face through the entire series (I would've loved to see some of her out-takes!).

Leaving out the great animated features such as SIMPSONS and FUTURAMA, CHEERS was IMHO one of the best sitcoms in the history of the medium -- right up there with newer ones such as SEINFELD and MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, older ones such as TAXI and ALL IN THE FAMILY, and really old ones such as I LOVE LUCY and THE HONEYMOONERS.

I even seem to recall a couple of uses of the word "squid" as an insult in CHEERS. I believe once when Carla had provoked Diane's anger once too often, Diane told her to "go mate with a squid". Another time it was Carla who referred to the CHEERS bar-flies contemptuously as "squids".

A great, great show -- I hope it never goes out of syndication.

Cheers,
Tani

The Simpsons seem to have a very special relationship with Abq - our new minor league baseball team, The Isotopes being named after that episode you mention WK. It caused quite a controversy in town as persons were deciding what to name the team, with citizens being split about 50/50 between "The Simpsons rocks and that would be awesome." and "Please, Albuquerque gets enough badmouthing without us naming our ballteam after a cartoon!"

I of course, was of the former camp! :notworth:

And let us not forget the long-running Nickelodeon 'toon show ROCKET POWER, about four California pre-teens who never go to school or do chores, but spend all their time surfing, skateboarding, skiing, playing volleyball, eating greasy junk food, breaking into closed amusement areas, and providing other fine role-models for young viewers.

Anyway, one of the four -- a Kansas-born computer nerd named Sam -- is nicknamed "The Squid", which is apparently West Coast surferese for "the new kid who can't keep up with all our lovable hijinks".

In one particularly entertaining scene, the Rocket Power kids are being punished for one of their hilarious break-ins by having to sort huge buckets of Loligo for the local aquarium seals. At one point, a chastened Twister says to Sam, "Hey, remind me never to call you 'Squid' again!" Indeed!

A week or two ago i saw one were they all go to an aquarium, theres an empty one thats being cleaned and Lisa asks were the fish are then there's a shot of a storage room with a large octopus in a bag being thrown in. Then Bart moons Skinner from inside a giant clam, swims up and his arms are grabbed by an octopus and he's beaten up by assorted sea creatures. They bring him to the hospital and Dr. Hibbert says its quite common, points at posters where children are being hurt by puffer fish, and one of a giant squid eating a school bus.
I think this episodes been posted before but I'm too lazy to find out...
