Oh, and here's another question:

Sharks detect electrical impulses by way the the ampules of Lorenzini. Do cephs show any electrosensory capability?

We'll get back to you on that one; not sure if magnetic field would give the same sort of response, but I'll place some magnets around the squid tank and see what happens .....

Didn't Budelman have some sort of theory about cephalopod electroreception??

A sehkrit!

John, I've actually got a Masters students starting in ~ 6 weeks looking at these Sepioteuthis squid. I'm sure I can get him to do a little bit of environmental manipulation to check out a few of your ideas/queries. Fire away right here and we'll see what experimental design we can establish to determine what they are/are not capable of doing.
Cheers

Hmm.. Capital idea.... I'll see what I can some up with. My father in law is an engineer, and I think he can give me some low-voltage ideas. I'll send you some info by private e -

Jean,

Who is that?

John

Bernd Budelmann does a lot of work with octopus sensory systems etc and nuerosystems too. I haven't got my ref list with me but I'll try and remember to look out some refs.
