TOKYO: With regard to commercial fishing in and around Japan, an article was published on this day about whaling and its perceived affect on marine life, with particular interest in sardine, mackerel, and squid. Basically, the President of the Japan Whaling Association (JWA) is taking an opportunity to express his belief that "a whale sanctuary in the South Pacific as proposed by NZ is absurd."

MADRID: A giant Taningia danae weighing 275 pounds was caught today (11/3/00) off the coast of northern Spain. To give you an idea of how unusually large it is, cephalopod expert Richard Ellis previously stated that Taningia danae typically weigh in at 135 pounds. You can read his statements in 1998 on this animal by visiting this site (http://spider.nhm.ac.uk/hosted_sites/tcp/Tdanae.html).

BOSTON: Friday the 13th delivered some bad news for the individual who got himself into trouble for stocking up illegally on loligo squid (as previously reported on this site (see below)). Now, the headline on Friday's PR Newswire said it all "New Bedford Fish Dealer Admits to False Statements, Reports U.S. Attorney." This was the official report of his pleading guilty (which was previously reported on TONMO.com back in June of 2000).

From Environmental News Network: El Nino May Skew the Balance of Marine Ecosystem (http://www.enn.com/enn-news-archive/2000/09/09082000/phyto_31235.asp)
-- toward the end of this article (by author Margot Higgins), there is a brief explanation with regard to El Nino and its effect on squid populations. There's not a whole lot of upside to having a life-span of six months -- this article reinforces that notion. (This article mentions that "squid" have a life span of six months -- the species is not identified, however. The Loligo paelei, or common long-finned squid, is believed to have a life span of 2 years. Other sources commonly claim that squid in general have a 1 year life span. The life span of the infamous Architeuthis (http://www.tonmo.com/architeuthis.php), or Giant Squid, is unknown.)

Hey kids! There's a new show coming to Nickelodeon -- Oswald the Octopus. To quote the press release, "Oswald is a show about a blue octopus who lives in a whimsical city with his best friends, a pet hot dog, penguin and daisy." Now, we all know that the blue-ringed octopus of Australia is one of the few octopuses with a deadly venom. I'm hoping Oswald is not the venemous type.

The Internet has just become a better place. According to a press release from Caribbean WebCams, LLC (reprinted on TONMO.com with permission), the world's first permanent underwater reef WebCam (a.k.a., "ReefCam") has been placed in the waters off Bonaire. Grab yourself <a ">a look (http://www.bonairewebcams.com).

Apparently squid sales are low on the West coast. As a result, Rubio's Restaurant's stock has taken a dixie -- it dropped a whopping 35 percent on Wednesday. Yeouch! Unfortunately their recent calamari marketing campaign fell short with consumers.

TOKYO: An article titled "Russia Seizes Japan Fishing Boat" described how the Russian coast guard seized a squid-fishing boat in Russian waters. Apparently this wasn't the first time this has happened...

Albatross! Get your albatross! There are apparently plenty to be had in Midway Atoll (in the Pacific) according to an article published in the LA Times. The pinnacle of success for the lanky albatross is to fly out to sea where they dine for years on live squid. Worse fates were explained in detail.

An interesting article by Becky Ham appeared this week on MSNBC about "The Great Dying (http://www.msnbc.com/news/432102.asp)" that occurred about 251 million years ago as a result of a disasterous event (most likely an asteroid crashing into Earth). Unlike most reports that obsess with dinosaurs, this article is with regard to research and findings on the massive loss of marine life. Scientists studied a sampling of 333 different species from the time (including cephalopods) and concluded that 94% of them became extinct within the span of 500,000 years -- a relative blink.

BANGKOK: Thai Union Frozen Products Plc, Asia's largest tuna exporter, projects an overall drop in their earnings per share this year. While 50% of their revenues come from tuna, the balance comes from sales of canned squid, octopus and pet food.

An article titled "Monster Squid from Antarctic", reports on the discovery of British biologist Amanda Lynnes at the end of April. She found a seven-foot long Kondakovia longimana (ref. Dr. James Wood's CephBase). This is not the famed Giant Squid Architeuthis), although the article takes the liberty of calling it one.

The recovery of the remains of this squid is nonetheless impressive, as it is the largest Kondakovia longimana specimen ever found, and one of its precious eyes was nicely in tact. But again, the article is implying that this is a "monstrous" creature. While it is certainly a large animal, and a palm-sized eyeball is surely worthy of note, the article is remiss not to compare that to the eye of Architeuthis, which has been measured to be as large as 16 inches in diameter. Now that's monstrous!

ONTARIO: Canadian's Minister of Fisheries and Oceans issued this statement (http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/COMMUNIC/Statem/2000/marshall-june22e.htm) about the Supreme Court's Marshall decision. These articles essentially provide insight into current regulations imposed in Canada's commercial fishery industry. As of June 21st, there are four commercial fishery licenses in the First Nations for collecting squid. As we saw in the article cited below dated June 9, the U.S. is also doing its part in keeping our marine populations at healthy levels, and are taking steps to ensure fishery commerce remains regulated to secure its long-term stability.

An article was published about a tranquil island off the east coast of Malaysia. It mentions the island's abundance of marine life, including cuttlefish and squid. It reminded me of a story a co-worker told me this week about a remarkable snorkeling excursion he once had. In seeing what he thought were a school of 6-inch to 1-foot fish, he swam among and through them. As he interacted with them, he realized with astonishment that he was actually swimming with a school of squid! He called the experience "weird."

An article appeared on the PR Newswire about a commercial fisherman who plead guilty to lying about the amount of loligo squid he caught. Nice try, buddy!

Last week, the Underwater Adventures (http://www.underwateradventures.cc) aquarium issued a press release about record attendance over the holiday weekend. The release in part boasts the exotic sea animals in their exhibit, including a giant Pacific octopus.

Octopus Opens Jam Jar in One Minute -- It seems (from this isolated experiment, at least) that their long-term memory is lacking -- but what do you expect from something with a cluster of nerves for a brain?
