um... Nov 5th, 2003, 11:02pm we better watch it or Tony'll be taking the axe to this thread too!
He practically asked for it  . He wanted us to 'put a sock in it', and this is an entirely appropriate response. Ceph content. Socks.

Archeopterix Nov 5th, 2003, 11:21pm Now ! really want to make socktapuses! I think I saw grey toe-socks at Whalemart.... :rainbow: I will put them on my feet and no one will say anything cause they are all used to me by now. 8)
TaningiaDanae Nov 5th, 2003, 11:38pm I believe those last two Socktopuses are variations on the basic Red-Heeled Sock Monkey (genus and species unknown). You can find the directions, among other places, at this URL:

Archeopterix Nov 5th, 2003, 11:41pm I always thought they looked a little like a subspecies of Howler monkey. Alouatta seniculus woolsockius, maybe?
um... Nov 6th, 2003, 01:05pm This is Socktopus canadensis.

Neil
Clem Nov 6th, 2003, 02:25pm Um et al,
If you have a cat, you can make a special socktopus for the little bounder. Find an old sock, preferably one on the foot of someone taking a nap. Fill the toe with catnip and tie a knot in the sock. Then, use scissors or a bowie knife to cut the tube behind the knot into strips. Voila! A mind-altering socktopus for Mr. Kitty. For advanced fun, read aloud from Victor Hugo's "Les Travailleurs de la Mer" as Mr. Kitty and the socktopus re-enact Gillatt's encounter with the devilfish.

Is there any other use for a (c/K)at, other than as an instrument of torture and/or mayhem?
Whoa... déjà vu...
Neil
Steve O'Shea Nov 6th, 2003, 02:54pm Hmmmmmm. I enjoyed reading 'feet' simply because I have to deal with cephs on a 24/7 basis - it offered me a bit of light relief - a bit like my constantly referring to my Neil D poster; ya see, I don't have a lot of time to consider many things, but I squeeze it in there for Neil and I squeezed (past tense ... RIP indeed) it in for feet.
The thread would have died in due course ... most do ... but this one seemed to show no signs of slowing down (in fact it was cranking up).
Reminds me of that film 'Misery', where Cathy Bates (sp?) hobbles that poor fellow (James Caan?) when strapped in bed.
There's no dissention in the ranks ... we just gotta hobble on
NickA5582 Nov 6th, 2003, 04:33pm I was sure Steve would make a Peoples Fingernail Scum thread or something like that, oh well, this one will do. I give it a month and a half before it's locked.
um... Nov 6th, 2003, 04:41pm I was sure Steve would make a Peoples Fingernail Scum thread or something like that, oh well, this one will do. I give it a month and a half before it's locked.
That is quite an optimistic assumption. I figure that even without any help I can get this baby locked in half that time. Sure, it may still be ceph-related now...
Neil
NickA5582 Nov 6th, 2003, 04:51pm Anyone gonna make a sock squid? Sock cuttlefish? Sock ammonite? If um.. can do that, we might have another pointless forum!!!!
um... Nov 6th, 2003, 05:06pm Anyone gonna make a sock squid? Sock cuttlefish? Sock ammonite? If um.. can do that, we might have another pointless forum!!!!
Good idea! A sock squid (needs a clever name) would be even cooler than a socktopus, and I'd love to see someone pull off an ammonite.
I was going to make a sock slug, but I figured that was too dumb. Even for me.
Neil
NickA5582 Nov 6th, 2003, 05:13pm I'm making (unsuccessfully) a garbage belemite (based on Phils emoticon :belemnit:) out of Mountain Dew cans.

NickA5582 Nov 6th, 2003, 06:37pm Done! Turned out like crap, though. Now I just need film and to develop it, which should take a month or 2, when this thread is long dead. Made of duct tape, paper, and a Mountain Dew can. Now to make one of a pen cap and toothpicks......(need clever name for both)
tonmo Nov 6th, 2003, 07:00pm Um.... um.
I've received several private thank-you's for locking the "inane" People's Feet thread... that's not really reflected in the poll here, but then again, the answers were kind of leading...
I think you raise a good point about the description of the forum, which I did indeed write. I'm going to consider making it general cephalopod discussions, and leave the Supporters Forums as the appropriate place for people to banter if they choose. Frankly speaking, I'd rather the public forums be devoted to cephalopod discussions, that's what this community was built on, and when people come back to check in on new posts, it's helpful to have focused discussions happening in the right places... It's all good, part of the natural evolution of an online community... enjoy the ride! :)

That's a good point.

Here's another socktopus (I think):
Neil
o.vulgaris Nov 6th, 2003, 07:22pm oh, I forgot to say my blessings on the feet thread, well I think that thread only had one path and that was being locked, I think I was the only one who posted against the posting of feet because it was a bit off topic after all this is a ceph forum not a feet forum, I clearly see that steve has a feet fetish and for that he should do a search about "feet fetish message boards" on google, it might serve it's purpose. :P
I intentionally joined this forum becuase I am a ceph enthusiast like most of you but I'm not a feet enthusiast, maybe the feet thread could have been posted in the supporter's thread and it might have never got closed, after all the supporter's thread is for all general banter. :)
Phil Nov 6th, 2003, 07:55pm Just a general thought, and aimed at no-one in particular.
Well, in my humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with off topic humour in a thread as long as it does not spread too far and permeate the whole of the site.
If 'Peoples Feet' appeals, excellent! Post there and have fun. If the thread does not appeal then there is no obligation to post there or even read it. There are enough serious reviews and articles on the site to read without having to get too worried about one stupid topic. Nonetheless, one would not want to see the Ceph Care and Science sections made frivolous.
In other words, why not have a silly thread here? Better that people are silly in one or two amusingly directionless threads than be silly in areas that it would be totally inappropriate.
By the way, I really want to see that tin-can belemnite. Perhaps a pair of tights cut in half could make the shells of two orthoconic nautiloids? :D :nautiloi: :nautiloi:
um... Nov 6th, 2003, 08:05pm By the way, I really want to see that tin-can belemnite.
Me too! I'm bursting with anticipation. (at least, I hope it's anticipation...)
Neil
joel_ang Nov 6th, 2003, 08:13pm Btw, I am trying to make a paper mache' cuttlefish but its not that easy.I would also like to see the belemnite. :D
Phil Nov 6th, 2003, 08:17pm Cool Joel,
I must admit about a year ago I tried making some home-made miniatures out of clay for the 'Insecta' combat game I mentioned in the 'Cephs in Board Games' thread.
Trouble is, the belemnites just came out as looking.......well, obscene, quite frankly.
That idea I condemned to the dustbin.
Phil
tonmo Nov 6th, 2003, 08:20pm Phil, good points, good points... I'm all for having fun and engaging in some off-topic banter in the right environments...
Without getting too into it here publically, there are two ways content can be off-topic:
1) A seed note and all its children are completely off-topic (e.g., People's Feet)
2) A seed note is on topic (about cephs) but a reply (or string of replies) wanders into a discussion about something totally different.
At this point, I have little tolerance for type 1 (perhaps blame it on the arm/back pain), and type 2 I don't care too much about, the community will self-rule in those instances.
However, regardless of type 1 or 2, as Webmaster of TONMO.com, I feel I have an obligation to ensure that people who come here to discuss (and read discussions about) cephs are finding what they're looking for. So, I'm publically musing here whether all type 1 discussions should be relagated to the Supporters Forum, if only to keep such discussions from spreading over a wider area (as seems to be happening... for example, we're seeing lots of cross-references between forums, etc.)...
ANYway... I certainly am rambling... but we'll address it... Really, all I want is to take a little break!!
I'll be back! (pun ruefully intended)
Jean Nov 6th, 2003, 08:26pm I can't wait , don't have the time/energy to make a socktopus! but I have beaded an octopus book mark (as the other cephalopodic beadophile can tell you :D )
So here t'is (sorry about the quality but I just scanned it in, I don't have a digi camera , I may have mentioned this before :D :D :D )
J
tonmo Nov 6th, 2003, 08:30pm Jean: awesome!
Interestingly, my 4yo son came home today with an octopus he made at school... four intersecting popsicle sticks made up the 8 arms, and a fuzzy ball for the head and two googly eyes... The sticks were painted red... ah well... here it is!

o.vulgaris Nov 6th, 2003, 09:10pm oh that's nice, anyone else with creative masterpieces? :D
Jean Nov 6th, 2003, 09:57pm Hey Tony,
Tell your son......I LIKE it. It's very cool! Do we have another cephalomaniac in the making?????
J
joel_ang Nov 6th, 2003, 10:47pm Clay eh? Sounds like a good idea, maybe I'll make me a clay cuttle in my spare time. :)
Steve O'Shea Nov 6th, 2003, 11:48pm Utter, utter, utter jibberish; that's what I think of my own post.
Queen Sheetal rocks!
Steve O'Shea Nov 6th, 2003, 11:56pm A little bit of humour. 29,000,000 google hits on feet (the world has a foot fetish); a search 'within results' gave 44 entries linked to www.TONMO.com, most of which referred to dimensions of squid, or water depths, but sadly not a single hit on 'peoples feet'.
joel_ang Nov 7th, 2003, 12:44am Interesting debate there Steve O, I'm with u on that. Well back on the topic, here's another view of the #2 socktopus. I also like the plural form Socktopi, which was mentioned on the site where I got the pic.
Steve O'Shea Nov 7th, 2003, 12:55am .... best I can do at short notice.
8 little toes (arms) and 2 big toes (tentacles),
Squid foot puppet!
joel_ang Nov 7th, 2003, 01:30am I have made an important find, a new species of ceph. I have named it Sepia toenailus. I took a picture of it before I cooked it. Surprisingly, it has only 5 arms and is tentacleless.

joel_ang Nov 7th, 2003, 07:21am Well, but that isn't exactly a socktopus either :?
um... Nov 7th, 2003, 07:40am Well, but that isn't exactly a socktopus either :?
It's a wind sock. Yeah, I'm reaching just a little bit. There don't seem to be enough (highly accessible) pictures of actual socktopuses online... yet.
o.vulgaris Nov 7th, 2003, 06:53pm ...Tony, as the villian responsible for the foot-fetish thread..
haha, did you take my advice steve?
Steve O'Shea Nov 7th, 2003, 07:01pm .... and which particular gem would that have been?
tonmo Nov 7th, 2003, 07:14pm :periscop: my counter-rubbish was rubbish
tonmo Nov 7th, 2003, 09:04pm ...and to umm...'s earlier point, the description of The Octopus' Den is now "General cephalopod and community event discussion forum."
This shouldn't change the Type 2 style of posting, so post away to your heart's content!... for all Type 1 / so-called "pointless threads", see the Supporter's Forum...
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, good! No worries, on with your business...
Thanks!
tonmo Nov 8th, 2003, 06:49am Thanks to Kat for two new smilies!

o.vulgaris Nov 8th, 2003, 01:41pm .... and which particular gem would that have been?
to do a search on google for "foot fetish meesage boards" of-course.
o.vulgaris Nov 8th, 2003, 01:45pm I must say I do like the new smilies, it's good to have a touch of humor on the boards but not too much if you know what I mean. :P
pardon me for using this smily for no reason since we are on topic but I want to give it a first try lol. :feet:
joel_ang Nov 8th, 2003, 07:01pm Well, we are not exactly on topic, now, ya know what I mean  . Just for...well...nothing, S.toeailus is still on my foot, I didn't realise the marker was permanent. :?
um... Nov 8th, 2003, 07:21pm Well, we are not exactly on topic, now, ya know what I mean  . Just for...well...nothing, S.toeailus is still on my foot, I didn't realise the marker was permanent. :?

This is not exactly on topic, but it's not too far off:
Octopus Craft (http://www.dltk-kids.com/animals/moctopus.html)
TaningiaDanae Nov 8th, 2003, 07:54pm Just one question: Why is the Tintenfisch Is Cruel To Me thread any more on-topic than the late lamented People's Feet thread? From what I can see, TTFICTM is mainly about Neil Diamond and has nothing whatsoever to do with Cephs. If that one is permitted to exist, why not PF?
:twocents: ,
Tani
President and Founder, PFIZER
("People's Feet" Is Zowie and Endures, Regardless)
joel_ang Nov 8th, 2003, 08:13pm Thats one good point there Tani, coincidentaly, the thread was also started by :oshea:
tonmo Nov 8th, 2003, 08:22pm Fully valid point, Tani. That, and "Yawl", and many, many others (I believe all are in Octopus' Den) currently fall under the same umbrella.
Without going into a long(er) justification, at this point, I'll chalk it up to timing -- this had to happen one way or another, and People's Feet was in the wrong place at the wrong time. i.e., because of its high activity at the time, it attracted negative attention from a community that was growing increasingly aware that our collective focus was drifting away. Several comments, from "newbies" and long-timers (such as yourself) alluded to the fact that recent TONMO.com community discussions were increasingly drifting away from cephs.
It's the people that make TONMO.com what it is, so banter and unveiling of personalities are enthusaistically encouraged, as they have ever been. However, not at the expense of the subject matter that brought us together in the first place. For waaayyyyyy off-topic seed posts, going forward, they are encouraged, but should be relegated to the Supporters' forum.
For all the rest of the historical threads here in the Octopus' Den and elsewhere in the public forums, I think they're fine as an historical record, and if they themselves become an issue (through increased activity) they'll be managed accordingly. People's Feet was capped because it was continuing without end; and was even migrating far off the trail of feet for goodness sake, and, it wasn't founded on anything cephy. As I said in an earlier post somewhere, I considered moving it to the Supporters' forum, but that wouldn't be fair to the non-Supporter participants.
If TONMO.com were not a managed community, obviously none of this would be an issue. But, for better or worse (and I'd happily argue it's for better), it's a managed community. I've been part of lots of communities, and have literally managed dozens, and TONMO.com is the best I've seen. It doesn't take much to knock an online community back on its heels, and in fact it takes a lot to keep it standing. That's a collective effort; we all do our part in making it work!
um... Nov 8th, 2003, 08:38pm As I said in an earlier post somewhere, I considered moving it to the Supporters' forum, but that wouldn't be fair to the non-Supporter participants.
Poor non-Supporters, they're going to miss out on some great lunacy.
TaningiaDanae Nov 8th, 2003, 08:43pm Well, here's good news for Supporters anyway: Hie thee to the Supporters Forum where awaits my new thread, "People's Feet, the Forum That Will NEVER DIE!!!!!!!" (Title copycatted from TTF)
Let's get this show on the road again!
:D
tonmo Nov 8th, 2003, 08:46pm Poor non-Supporters, they're going to miss out on some great lunacy.
Yeah, I mean, to elaborate, if I posted pictures of my feet (or any commentary really) in a public forum, and then had my own comments (or photos of my feet heaven forbid) moved behind a for-pay only wall, I might not take too kindly to that. "You mean now I gotta pay to see what people think of my feet??" :goofysca:
um... Nov 8th, 2003, 11:22pm That's funny, the Tanster stole my idea (the  in my earlier post). She did a better job than I would've, though, so it's all good.
I'm going to post there a lot.
joel_ang Nov 8th, 2003, 11:24pm Poor non-Supporters, they're going to miss out on some great lunacy.
Indeed, poor me :(
Steve O'Shea Nov 9th, 2003, 01:37am Joel, can you speak nicely to your folks .... maybe they'll help you out. They've got to be pretty impressed with & proud of you; it's Xmas coming up; maybe this could be a pre-Xmas treat (and you could ask them for the real giant/colossal squid next year  ).

Melissa Nov 17th, 2003, 09:39pm :nofeet: I turn around for a minute to call some aquariums about TONMOcon and look what happens! There aren't even socktopuses in this thread anymore. :nofeet:
