Wasabe has finally been transfered to the new tank along with his lionfish friend. He is doing well and has grown quite a bit :) .The old tank is now being used to house another lionfish.

How long have they been co-habs Joel?

Ever see any aggresion or other interactions?

They've been together for a week. Absolutely no aggression or interaction for that matter. They don't even compete for food. :)

Well, wasabe inked about half an hour ago. I removed some of it using a fine net, wasabe and the lion seem to be doing fine but I was just wondering if sepia could be asorbed by filter feeders.

Sepia ink?

The wrost thing about it with filter feeders is that it sticks to the filter feeders and coats them with the slimy ink and prevents them from feeding.

Used to happen to my leather corals, I had to blow the ink off them with a turkey baster.

Think the Volitans made it ink?

Nope, It was actually my fault. I came to him with a the net containg his lunch and I guess he didn't realise I was there. I put my hand out, dropped a shrimp in and he inked. The protein skimmer has already removed most of the ink :) .
It's not gonna be easy on my feather duster worms as they always retract back into their tube. And whats more, their "feather duster" is also their gills :? .

I think Wasabe is a sepia bandensis, correct me if I'm wrong, which I usually am. Are you planning on buying one or just learning about them? :)

Well im learning at the moment.. but i would REALLY love to start a cuttlefish tank..

that being said.. are those types of CF's readily available int he US?

I really would like some Cuttlefish but i want them to be a deacent size and not too small

:welcome: to TONMO.com

Sepia Bandensis are the most commonly imported species to the US, however, it would take quite a bit of luck to find one. They will grow to about 3 inches ML. The problem is that because the US has no native cuttlefish species, the cuttlefish have to be imported.

Cuttlefish aren't good shippers and about 9 in 10 cuttles will die during transit. To make it worse, most of the cuttles that survive arrive as adults, which means they have a pretty short time left to live.

You could check with your LFS if they can get a cuttle, but I think bimacs are best for people who are looking for an interesting , colourful and diurnal cephs.

Wasabe can now be fed by hand, kinda like Colin's pic. I tried to get pics but the tentacles were too fast. Wasabe missed once and got my thumb, now I got a scratch mark on my nail from his beak.

Do you have a digi cam? I think you can make video's and get the specific frame you want when wasabe "shoots"

joel_ang

Yup I do but its kinda hard to get a good grip on a cam while pressing buttons with one arm stuck in the tank with shrimp wriggling like mad.

Too bad. :(

I saw a lionfish once. It was in a 300 gallon tank.

Wow ,that sucks. How do you suppose he got him without being stung, or was it dead beforehand?

joel_ang

Well, my parents said he was observing the lionfish for a few hours. And in the pic below, the spines were colllapsed and facing towards me, so I guess he got it from the front.

What else did he have to eat in five days? Who else fed him?

joel_ang
Nov 25th, 2003, 12:49am
I fed him a crab just before I left, other days he was fed fish and shrimp by my dad who also loves the cephs.

How long do you think your greedy cuttle had been planning this dinner party? We've heard of cephs observing the tank across the room, and your parents said that Wasabe had been sizing up the lionfish for a few hours, despite not being hungry. What triggers the decision to eat the neighbors?

Well, as of late, the lionfish has been competing with wasabe for food. Do cephs bear grudges? Well even after wasabe has finished a crab and the shell is on the coral, all i have to do is move it again with a stick and he'll get ready to attack again.

Ah too bad Joel, sorry for the L/fish...

But out of this i think that we can, hand on our hearts, tell everyone in the future that cuttles just don't mix with other non-sessile animals!

all the best

Well more bad news. A certain someone passed away while I was overseas at a ML of 2.5inches (Too bad no eggs Colin). I left it at home while I was away for 17 days, maybe the LFS might have been better.

Sorry to hear that, Joel. I'm eager to hear about what you'll have next. I thought of you when I was at the National Aquarium in Baltimore over the weekend because they had seahorses and seadragons on display. No cuttlefish, and if there were squids or octos, we missed them.

Happy new year to all who enjoy lion dances and firecrackers! My fabulous local Chinese restaurant was full of people having new year's dinner parties last night. Singapore might be very festive right now.

Thanks alot guys :) , it's really quite a pity, since I've had him the longest. Once I'm done changing the water and all that stuff, I'll be looking for either a latimanus or maybe an octopus (maybe a cyanea?) but that would probably be a bit too big.

I was thinking of switching it back to freshwater coz I kinda missed the arowana, but I think I'll just stick with saltwater.

Hi Joel... I know what you mean!

That's why i only have a freshwater tank just now... I think ceph keeping can be a bit stressfull compared to arowanas etc... However, my friend still has 10 baby cuttles for sale... i could syphon out that freshwater in about 10 mins LOL

Happy hunting!
