Just thought we'd paste online our latest acquisition (proudly sponsored by Stabi-Craft boats and Discovery Channel).

Expect to see live squid soon :)

It doesn't have a name yet. Anyone with any suggestions?

I think it can only be:

CTHULHU

(or some variation thereof... Perhaps Great Cthulhu or Call of Cthulhu or even Cthulhu Cruises...)

All hail the dead but dreaming lord of all Cephs!

...and imagine the confusion at the wharf as they try to figure that one out. :cthulhu:

Congratulations on the boat!

Hmmm.

Alecton deux? No, that probably wouldn't fly with American audiences. (Our government encourages us to hate the French.)

Hell, if Condoleezza Rice can have a supertanker named after her (true story), then that there jet-screamin' Stabicraft vixen ought to named Tintenfisch.

You are kidding about the tanker, right??? OMG....

Anyway, call the boat the Pequod...

Hee hee... Just pulling your leg. Hmm.... How about the Maelstrom? The White Squall? The Ancient Mariner?

About about "Fujisawa's Sake"?

Yeah, didn't think so...

Good luck!

Sweet Caroline

The Don Estelle?

This has the potential for a good poll if anyone feels inspired.........

Clem
Oct 10th, 2003, 10:38pm
Phil,

I cannot accept the burden of winnowing down the suggestions to a manageable, poll-friendly number. Got too many enemies already.

Is Mr. Boat friends with Tugger, Russell Crowe's talking tugboat?

HMS Scylla
Steenstrup's Folly
USS The Sullivans' Squid
USCGSS Nostonmo
Ika-Maru
HMS Mantle (sister ship of the Hood)

Steve, why not name her for this Queen Sheetal you and Colin refer to?

Steve O'Shea
Oct 12th, 2003, 01:38am
..... do you not know who Queen Sheetal is Melissa? Those were the days (as Mary Hopkins used to sing) .... it was dangerous to log on to TONMO then - you never knew what whispy green mists and tutu-clad tane toads would appear.

.... it all started a long, long, very long time ago, when Colin was knee-high to a grasshopper, sitting alone in some bar (or was it Phil?) .... it was so long ago

Melissa
Oct 12th, 2003, 10:54am
I don't know of Queen Sheetal, but your description evokes the little girl in the Australian cane toads documentary with her pets, cane toads, all dressed up for tea. My cat is worried that she will be subjected to dress up, like the toads and the cats mentioned in

I hope no one will post pictures of their octopus in costume!

.... actually, I quite like Queen Sheetal as a boat name.

The RV Queen Sheetal

We'll post a poll of the best/more appropriate names soon, but keep up the suggestions for the time being.

Cheers
O

Ps, Phil, I think the RV Don Estelle has both elegance and sophistication too.

Yeah! I was also going to suggest something like Crunchy Graneledone, but I thought that would be too obnoxious.

And if Steve had, you know, more of a porn star thing going on you could use something like Naughtylust. Just about any species (http://tolweb.org/tree/eukaryotes/animals/mollusca/cephalopoda/cephIndex.html) is ripe for dirty punning.

Wait a sec, this isn't groaners...

I was trying to decide how the rod holders stood with the probable aim of the craft. Admittedly it would look great off Rangitoto but on the Chatham Rise it would probably look a bit out of position!

My choice of name after studying the photos carefully (and the person standing alongside her) is "The Shiny Bugger"

Phil and I agree....this is what you should buy and use for future expeditions....

I'm still getting to grips with the hippo/Archi Face Off in your avatar and you go post something like that!!

90 mill!

There's a lot you could do with a ship like that, as far as decking her out with tanks was concerned, and the near-endless research opportunities. You would have to wonder how seaworthy she was, and what sort of money was involved refurbishing her for the luxury/tourist market. You could be purchasing one COLOSSAL albatross ......

As far as naming the boat is concerned (the smaller one), I've kind of settled of the R.V. Don Estelle (thanks Phil). Additional signage goes on before 15 Jan (3 other sponsors), and when that's done I'll find a place to put her name.

There will be no loose lips aboard this ship.

Phil

Oh wow! The Don Estelle! :notworth:

If anyone is wondering who Don Estelle was, these links should be of some help:

Steve, if you were to buy the aircraft carrier as a huge floating laboratory then I think you should leave the catapult launch mechanism intact. It could be used for irritating reporters or certain ranting fishermen......

I will not have gossip on the hanger deck.

Steve,

If you cannot afford the aircraft carrier, how about this for an ideal laboratory for you? This is one of the weirdest ideas I have ever seen:

You'd need to hang a lot of curtains, and you'd need to hire someone to pull them all at night.

Not sure if I'd want to live in it; it'd sure be different. Perfect extroverted bachelors pad.
