View Full Version : Olorin & Achilles Journal
dreadhead Mar 8th, 2008, 05:45pm I should of started this awhile ago,but better late than never.
They are both doing great. They come out every morning and every evening, and cruise a little in the afternoon.
They are both eating a wide variety food(shrimp, scallops, crabs, squid, and mussels).
Olorin is very interactive while Achilles is a little more stand offish.Hopefully Achilles will warm up one day.
here are a few photos of Olorin.I still can't get a good one of Achilles.
dreadhead Mar 8th, 2008, 05:46pm and one more.
dwhatley Mar 8th, 2008, 11:37pm Asher,
Are they in the same tank with a baffled divider? If I have not confused my octos (again) this was your plan but they interacted aggressively before you completed the divider and you separated them, expecting to put them back together as soon as the tank was secured.
dreadhead Mar 8th, 2008, 11:43pm No they have thier own tanks.I belive that was either AM or shipposhack.
Animal Mother Mar 9th, 2008, 02:22pm No they have thier own tanks.I belive that was either AM or shipposhack.
Nope, that was Simple. And we haven't heard anything about them since that happened.
dreadhead Mar 9th, 2008, 06:16pm Sorry for the confusion(I guess i was to lazy to actually look it up myself).
Jon Crossan Mar 9th, 2008, 07:57pm those are beautiful what species is that?
dreadhead Mar 9th, 2008, 08:29pm O. Briareus.(Caribbean reef octopus).tons O fun!
dreadhead Mar 10th, 2008, 06:13pm Last night I had some family over and they wanted to see Olorin and Achilles eat.So I thawed out some scallops and put on a show.Achilles ate no problem, however when I fed Olorin he grabbed the food and inked just a bit.The only other time he did this is when my brother and his wife were watching,I guess he doesn't like company over for dinner.
dreadhead Mar 10th, 2008, 09:26pm a friend of mine is a crabber, and he gave me a few small crabs today. Here are a few pics of Achilles eating a crab that may be too big.
dreadhead Mar 15th, 2008, 06:34pm Unfortunately I found Achilles under his tank all dried up.Not sure how he got out but I'm gonna find out,and double check Olorins tank to make sure he can't get out.RIP little one.
Nancy Mar 15th, 2008, 06:43pm RIP Achilles:angelpus:
So sad when they crawl out of the tank. Please check your water parameters to make sure they're OK. And yes, make sure that Olorin can't escape too.
Nancy
Animal Mother Mar 15th, 2008, 06:55pm :goodbye:
Sorry.
monty Mar 16th, 2008, 01:06am :angelpus: sorry.
dreadhead Mar 18th, 2008, 10:52pm I checked Achilles tank and one of the corners of the cover came loose.I re taped it and checked Olorins tank(it is sealed). It's a shame, and I feel terrible but it's a lesson to me and everyone else MAKE SURE YOUR TANK IS SECURE!!!On a positive not Olorin is doing well and getting bigger by the day.
dwhatley Mar 19th, 2008, 02:00am I am probably not the only one who is double checking the latches every night since you reported Achilles escape
Animal Mother Mar 19th, 2008, 09:09am Every night right after I go to bed I end up getting up and making sure. I'm probably about to add a few more layers of duct tape... and reinforce the screen somehow.... and probably add the rough side of some sticky velcro all the way around. Kalypso's strength is making me wonder how long it will be before she is man-handling everything.
dreadhead Mar 19th, 2008, 07:05pm I do like the velcro idea,I may try that myself along with the duct tape.
dreadhead Mar 20th, 2008, 09:27pm I just got a new tank mate for Olorin,a purple linckia,or a tamaria stria. It depends on whether my guy at the lfs knows what he is talking about or not.I do trust him but you never know,he said it was a purple linckia but I hear they are rare.
corw314 Mar 20th, 2008, 11:38pm I'm so sorry to hear.....:angelpus:
dwhatley Mar 20th, 2008, 11:53pm dh,
WHERE are the pictures of this rareity? I have never tried a linkia since they are not "supposed" to do well in aquariums - contrary to what I see, however. The Fromia are supposed to "do well" and I have never been able to keep one for more than a month (the last one lived longer than its counter parts at the LFS but still died where my commons from the keys have been with me two years).
Animal Mother Mar 21st, 2008, 01:48am Linkia's do well in larger tanks that don't get cleaned a lot. It's just hard to get them in good condition. Supposedly the lighter colored ones are more hardy.
dreadhead Mar 21st, 2008, 06:04pm I will try to get some pics tonight.
dreadhead Mar 21st, 2008, 06:36pm Here they are.
dreadhead Mar 21st, 2008, 07:59pm and some Olorin pictures.
Animal Mother Mar 21st, 2008, 09:49pm Very cool pictures!
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 01:01pm This morning when I got up Olorin was on the back glass. His arms had the corkscrew look and was very pale. Two (or so)hours later he was down in the bottom corner not doing much of anything, just swaying with the current and he is still there .I will keep you posted but I don't think he has much time left.:old:
monty Mar 23rd, 2008, 01:38pm  :fingerscrossed:
I'm sure you've checked that the water's OK, but it might be worth doing a water change and see if he perks up, if you haven't already...
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 01:45pm Yes,I checked the water and its fine.Did a 20% change and changed the carbon.
I ofered him some scallop but he refused it.
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 02:37pm Apparently he chewed two of his arms off with in the last hour or so.:(
Animal Mother Mar 23rd, 2008, 03:20pm :(
dwhatley Mar 23rd, 2008, 10:06pm dreadhead,
It is probably not something you have not checked but ... what is your salinity reading? I noticed Sisty and Dusa acting a bit strangly awhile back and thought to check the salt content. My other tanks are much larger and I have a given "formula" when I do my weekly water changes but I discovered that the smaller tank needed more monitoring for salt when testing showed a SG of 1.021.
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:00pm I did check salinity it was between 1.025 and 1.026.Unfortunatly Olorin has past, I can't believe it happened that fast.He has been acting a little strange the last few days but nothing I thought to be too concerned about. This morning he was out(no problem there)but his arms were corkscrewed,he wouldn't eat ,and he stayed out all day,I didn't think it would happen that fast.
God bless him he was great!
gholland Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:06pm RIP Olorin.
This has been a bad week or two for octos.
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:06pm I still don't want to take him out of the tank yet(I know i have to ),but that makes it finale. But I will before I go to bed.:(
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:09pm :boohoo::angelpus: RIP Olorin.
dreadhead Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:20pm I know it sounds bad that I lost two octos in one week,Achilles was a hard lesson in octo proofing ,I have to check the seal every day.Olorin on the other hand was old age.At least I don't see any other reason for his death.
Animal Mother Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:39pm :goodbye::sad:
dwhatley Mar 23rd, 2008, 11:53pm Dreadhead,
I know it is not much help, but if you review Biddle's post he went similarly. Carol mentioned slightly unusual behavior but nothing that shouted warning and then he passed away. It does seem that each animal is unique rather than a species generality as I also remember Greg saying there was a vast range in time and behavior of sesenence. I know what you mean about removing him, I sat and looked at Trapper a long time.
Animal Mother Mar 24th, 2008, 12:07am Einy was pretty quick too now that I think about it. I looked at him one night right before bed and he was all corkscrewed and twitching, seemed fine the night before. Dead the next morning. Didn't lose any arms though.

Strangely, Sisty has been out during the day, lost all ability to change color, stopped eating anything but Cyclop-eeze, and shown corkscrew arms. This week he is back to acting normally, only coming out in the dark and after 11:00 as well as taking shrimp with his Cyclop-eeze. I am delighted but have no clues as to why and how much longer ...
monty Mar 24th, 2008, 01:25am RIP Olórin :angelpus:
