View Full Version : Let's play.... NAME THAT BIZARRE CEPHALOPOD!!!!
DocidicusGigas Sep 11th, 2003, 06:12pm Kind of self-explanatory, huh? Just try name a bizarre species of cephalopod! Either try to name the first one, or try to think of a weirder one... If you think of a good one, just give clues to it and try to get others to guess it!
Here's the first odd cephalopod:
*clears throat*
1. Lives veeeeeeery deep
2. Isn't as terrifying as its name suggests
3. Is no squid or octopus at all
4. There is no fourth clue. Muahahahaha!

Here's one back at you:
The male is tiny, the female huge
She has warts
DocidicusGigas Sep 11th, 2003, 07:39pm Vampyroteuthis? Whoah, you're good....
I'm guessing Moroteuthis. But that's quite a stumper.
Now...
1. Think Daddy Longlegs
2. Think really weird....
3. Think NEW....
4. Think BIG!
Sedusa Sep 11th, 2003, 07:46pm Steve: Ocythoe tuberculata?
DocidicusGigas Sep 11th, 2003, 07:51pm Nope. Guess again. (A description will work, I'm not sure if they've named it yet)
Clem Sep 11th, 2003, 08:02pm Here's one back at you:

Kondakovia longimana, could be...

Tintenfisch Sep 11th, 2003, 08:05pm 1. Think Daddy Longlegs
2. Think really weird....
3. Think NEW....
4. Think BIG!
Probably the one they were calling a magnapinnid? With the 'elbows' in the ten identical arms?
Steve O'Shea Sep 11th, 2003, 08:06pm Steve: Ocythoe tuberculata?
Bingo; just one clue for you next time!
Q: no eye lens
Clem Sep 11th, 2003, 08:22pm 1. Think Daddy Longlegs

Dosidicus,
It must be the "Mystery Squid," which I have not seen conclusively ID'ed or named, but has been linked to the Chiroteuthid line (which you can see more of if you click here. (http://tolweb.org/tree?group=Chiroteuthid_families&contgroup=Decapodiformes))
To see another big, thus-far-unknown squid, hie thee over to the "Physiology and Biology" forum and check out the photographs of "Mystery Squid 2." (http://www.tonmo.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=346)
Here's one for you:
What squid's name sounds like a mobile-telephone manufacturer?
:?:
Clem
DocidicusGigas Sep 11th, 2003, 08:34pm WHOA! Tintenfisch got it!!!!!!
Nice.
NickA5582 Sep 11th, 2003, 08:35pm Steve:It's got to be a nautilus. (I looked it up) :tomato: must... stop.. ..tomatoing........myself... :tomato: :tomato: :tomato:

Here's a new one (also one clue):
The most sexually dimorphic cephalopods.

Steve O'Shea Sep 11th, 2003, 09:52pm WHOA! Tintenfisch got it!!!!!!
She's got skills; shame she's got a one-way ticket on a slow-boat to China.
Nautilus wasn't actually the one I was thinking about ... so there are 2 (you've got to find the other)
Tintenfisch Sep 11th, 2003, 09:58pm What squid's name sounds like a mobile-telephone manufacturer?
I suppose Teleoteuthis compacta (now Onychoteuthis) only counts as a mobile service provider... ;)
Clem Sep 11th, 2003, 11:32pm I suppose Teleoteuthis compacta (now Onychoteuthis) only counts as a mobile service provider... ;)
Oh my dear sweet Je--
That's damn good, Tintenfisch, but not the critter I was thinking of. You've got three of the letters in hand...you must be holding back.
Squid whose name sounds like a mobile-phone maunfacturer...
A squid who's trying to gobble up other squid's names and replace them with its own...
o.vulgaris Sep 12th, 2003, 12:13am ooh, nice, I wanna join in on this trivia game, me first, me first, hehe. :P

Aw, shucks.
Indeed... I think the name came up as a pun on another forum? I will let others guess. I suspect the answer is almost unique.. ;)
Steve O'Shea Sep 12th, 2003, 02:06am The most sexually dimorphic cephalopods.
:usa:
Hmmmmm. Could be any of Argonautidae (Argonauta spp.), Ocythoidae (Ocythoe), Tremoctopodidae (Tremoctopus spp.) or Alloposidae (= Haliphronidae, Haliphron ). I need more clues for this one.....
Re the telephone one .... first letter O, last letter A? (Tintentoontipplekakafish told me....)
DocidicusGigas Sep 13th, 2003, 01:26pm 1. Bermudan....
2. May not exist....
3. Enourmous- 200 feet long.....
Let's see you work this out!
PS- it's a loch ness monster kinda thing, so if you're researching, don't try cephalopod sites. You won't find it.

One of them is right, two more clues
1. Nobody has kept one alive in an aquarium for two weeks
2. The females egg cases are prized finds for beachcombers.
Now that Steve knows exactly which one it is, lets have someone else guess.

Clem Sep 13th, 2003, 03:29pm Squid whose name sounds like a mobile-phone maunfacturer...

A squid named named Onykia.

Is it that pesky old Octopus giganteus? Believed by some Bermudans (incl. "monster hunter" Teddy Tucker) to be responsible for various sinister acts, including serial lobster theft and malicious destruction of fishing equipment?
Clem
DocidicusGigas Sep 13th, 2003, 03:58pm Yep! It's octopus giganteus all right. I was thinking Lusca.... but that's just one of it's common names... Well done!

Amphibious.
Natural enemy is Sasquatch.
Habitat is being destroyed.
Only one link where you can find the answer, it's somewhere in this site...
DocidicusGigas Sep 13th, 2003, 04:54pm Chtulhu? Maybe...

Now that Steve knows exactly which one it is, lets have someone else guess.
Hmmmmm. I'll wait for someone else to pick it. I had them alive for > a week, but I can't remember exactly how long. It's all about procuring the right diet (they eat quite a lot of large, live fish and crustacean). We collected quite a few magnificent specimens in the upper 10 metres off the Wairarapa Coast, southeast North Island, New Zealand. Alive they are quite lovely!
At sea I had placed them in a recirculating system (rather than flow-to-waste), and when they died someone turned to me and said 'sorry, forgot to tell you but I've always thought that the ink of this think was toxic'. I wish that they had recalled this gem earlier on! That stuck, but I don't know who did the work to show that this was the case, if published (one did ink quite seriously during relocation); perhaps someone knows of a reference out there.
NickA5582 Sep 13th, 2003, 08:37pm Again, a non existent cephlapod. I'm looking for its specific name....

Melissa Sep 14th, 2003, 12:51pm Nick, we've seen pictures of the Silly Octopus, are you sure it doesn't exist? I thought he was Pale Hippo's drinking buddy - don't tell me WK is drinking all that beer without any help!

NickA5582 Sep 16th, 2003, 06:33pm Here's an extremely easy one that I made confusing...
Last name can quack........
Actually it's not that confusing either........
Phil Sep 16th, 2003, 07:43pm Hmmmm...........Architeuthis.....oh I don't know.
How about A.drake?
Yo, Kat, as for yours, how about Valbyteuthis?
Phil Sep 16th, 2003, 09:16pm Tintenfisch,
Ignore my post above.
Methinks yours may possibly be Onykia, possible juvenile specimen of Moroteuthis.
Do I win a coconut, or is it back to the books?
Tintenfisch Sep 16th, 2003, 09:50pm Wellllll... maybe third time lucky... ?
um... Sep 16th, 2003, 10:48pm Cirroctopus antarctica? No more clues?

Tintenfisch Sep 16th, 2003, 10:59pm  'Tis a squid

um... Sep 18th, 2003, 01:17pm Is it Promachoteuthis sp. D?
Sedusa Sep 18th, 2003, 02:27pm My only guess would be Asperoteuthis sp. B, maybe? but I can't find anything about that species being described in german...? I give up!
Tintenfisch Sep 18th, 2003, 05:28pm OK, one last set of hints.
 The tentacles, though unknown, will have hooks on them
 The species is characterized in part by its gelatinous tissue
 If Ghengis had married an Irishwoman, their child's Latin name would have gone something like this
 :squid: :?:
um... Sep 19th, 2003, 10:56am Enigmoteuthis odannyboykhani Bolstad, 2003? :x
Tintenfisch Sep 21st, 2003, 05:28pm OK, I'll tell ya. It's Chaunoteuthis mollis Appellöf, 1891. This is a species whose validity is currently under debate (on Tree of Life its current systematic status is given as Onychoteuthis Lichtenstein [sic] although there's no information given for a species of that name); it is generally agreed that Chaunoteuthis encompasses spent individuals of the other onychoteuthid genera. BUT certain dissimilarities suggest that it may also be its own kettle of fish; at the moment I'm translating Appellöf's original description from German and will post it here when it's done.
An enigma, indeed.
:grad:
NickA5582 Sep 21st, 2003, 06:14pm Another easy fake one.
Huge.
Lots of tentacles.
No beak, just teeth.
No suckers on the tentacles.

Aahhh..........obscure pub quiz moment.
Technically speaking, Architeuthis does not have the largest eye in the animal kingdom, though it has the largest eye of any currently living animal that we know of (except Mesonychoteuthis?).
In fact, the Jurassic ichthyosaurs Ophthalmosasaurus and Temnodontosaurus platyodon both had eyes that were larger. Temnodontosaurus had plates behind the eye that showed it had an eyeball of over 26cm.
There you go! Fact-o-rama.

NickA5582 Sep 30th, 2003, 09:30pm Guess not, here's an extremely easy one.
Here's a pic, no clues this time, making it all the more easy.
http://tolweb.org/tree/eukaryotes/animals/mollusca/cephalopoda/coleoidea/decapodiformes/lepidoteuthid_families/octopoteuthidae/taningia/TaningiaLarge.jpg
This should take about three minutes.

um... Sep 30th, 2003, 11:20pm Taningia Largea?

You should clarify that the squid, while perhaps ugly in death, is in fact most resplendent in life. Certain members must not be offended, unless you wish to incur the wrath of a world-class wit...
chrono_war01 Jan 15th, 2005, 12:18pm I say that it's a possible dinner to me...
erich orser Jan 26th, 2005, 12:09am The ceph many doctors argue should not be allowed to see patients as it never really attended medical school...

fluffysquid Jan 26th, 2005, 12:30am Zoidberg!
fluffysquid Jan 26th, 2005, 12:33am Zoidberg: "Well, if it isn't the hypochondriac... what's wrong with you today?"
Fry: "Well, my lead pipe hurts a little."
Zoidberg: "That's normal, next patient!"

Their patients include gulper eels
erich orser Jan 26th, 2005, 06:00am I appreciate ANY Futurama reference, of course, but that's not quite it...
Maybe my hinting is a little too strange... heck, it's what automatically pops into my mind whenever I see it written or hear this genus mentioned aloud, but...
chrono_war01 Jan 26th, 2005, 08:10am I have no idea, since I'm no expert...Plus, I can't spell except for Archisomethingthis and O'lMessie
