View Full Version : Let's play.... NAME THAT BIZARRE CEPHALOPOD!!!!

Kind of self-explanatory, huh? Just try name a bizarre species of cephalopod! Either try to name the first one, or try to think of a weirder one... If you think of a good one, just give clues to it and try to get others to guess it!

Here's the first odd cephalopod:

*clears throat*
1. Lives veeeeeeery deep
2. Isn't as terrifying as its name suggests
3. Is no squid or octopus at all
4. There is no fourth clue. Muahahahaha!

Dosidicus,

It must be the "Mystery Squid," which I have not seen conclusively ID'ed or named, but has been linked to the Chiroteuthid line (which you can see more of if you click here. (http://tolweb.org/tree?group=Chiroteuthid_families&contgroup=Decapodiformes))

To see another big, thus-far-unknown squid, hie thee over to the "Physiology and Biology" forum and check out the photographs of "Mystery Squid 2." (http://www.tonmo.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=346)

Hmmmmm. I'll wait for someone else to pick it. I had them alive for > a week, but I can't remember exactly how long. It's all about procuring the right diet (they eat quite a lot of large, live fish and crustacean). We collected quite a few magnificent specimens in the upper 10 metres off the Wairarapa Coast, southeast North Island, New Zealand. Alive they are quite lovely!

At sea I had placed them in a recirculating system (rather than flow-to-waste), and when they died someone turned to me and said 'sorry, forgot to tell you but I've always thought that the ink of this think was toxic'. I wish that they had recalled this gem earlier on! That stuck, but I don't know who did the work to show that this was the case, if published (one did ink quite seriously during relocation); perhaps someone knows of a reference out there.

OK, I'll tell ya. It's Chaunoteuthis mollis Appellöf, 1891. This is a species whose validity is currently under debate (on Tree of Life its current systematic status is given as Onychoteuthis Lichtenstein [sic] although there's no information given for a species of that name); it is generally agreed that Chaunoteuthis encompasses spent individuals of the other onychoteuthid genera. BUT certain dissimilarities suggest that it may also be its own kettle of fish; at the moment I'm translating Appellöf's original description from German and will post it here when it's done.
An enigma, indeed.

Aahhh..........obscure pub quiz moment.

Technically speaking, Architeuthis does not have the largest eye in the animal kingdom, though it has the largest eye of any currently living animal that we know of (except Mesonychoteuthis?).

In fact, the Jurassic ichthyosaurs Ophthalmosasaurus and Temnodontosaurus platyodon both had eyes that were larger. Temnodontosaurus had plates behind the eye that showed it had an eyeball of over 26cm.

There you go! Fact-o-rama.
