View Full Version : One on the way! mosthated Oct 23rd, 2007, 06:09pm I just ordered me a octo from liveaquaria.com i will be posting pics when it arrives, hopefully thursday! anyone considering i paid 95$ for octo/shipping simple Oct 23rd, 2007, 07:32pm tell me how it goes, i was thinking about getting it, but i chickened out, since i didnt know what species i'd get. Keep us updated. mosthated Oct 23rd, 2007, 07:40pm yeah i was going to let my lfs order me one but i just couldnt wait! simple Oct 23rd, 2007, 10:45pm as soon as you get it please tell me what type it is, because i might get one. Thanks mosthated Oct 24th, 2007, 10:40pm Here are a few pics of the sump i just setup for the octo tank, the water is still a bit cloudy because i just moved all that sand in the sump from the old 29gl fuge, 75gl tank with 55gl sump, what do you all think? I made tops for the 75 out of window screen kits you can buy at home depot, i just got a roll of the screen (fiber glass) and four of the little metal rail things and the plastic roller to put it in all in all the lids cost about 10$ and 30mins! that was way to easy.. i can post pics of them as well if anyone wants to see them... mosthated Oct 24th, 2007, 10:43pm the room and wires are still a mess, i just got finished removing the old sump/fuge and installing this one, so please excuse the mess. simple Oct 24th, 2007, 11:12pm I'd love to see pics of the top, because i have a roll of window screen and i was trying to see how i could build the top out of that. I didnt want to just superglue it on though.. mosthated Oct 25th, 2007, 05:59pm very cool octo! mantel length is approx 1". it inked twice after i put it in the tank but i scooped most of it out! this is the only picture i took while it was acclimating,, any id's on its id? Animal Mother Oct 25th, 2007, 06:07pm I'm going to bet it's Abdopus Aculeatus, but mostly because of the "Indo-Pacific" thing... couldn't tell by the picture, which is a good picture by the way. Thanks for sharing. Your tank setup looks great too! Maybe not cosmetically so much, but that's a great filtration setup. Congratulations and good luck! :) simple Oct 25th, 2007, 06:42pm Awesome! i think im gonna order mine right now...but before i do, does he seem healthy? is he active? has he eaten yet? how shy is he? Sorry for all the questions just want to know what i'm getting into... mosthated Oct 25th, 2007, 06:57pm he was active when i had him in the acclimation tank, i put him in the 75 and he has disapeared into the rock. looked fine to me, he was really cool to watch him swim through the tank when i first put him in there. I "think" he has all of his legs. I did not do a full examination of him, i just go home from work and my girlfriend has had him drip acclimating for 4 hours before i got home so i just took a quick snap shot and sent him into the tank, he was however healthy enough to run from my net and climb onto the capet before i picked him up. i fed the tank mysis, dont know if he ate or not the lights are out. he is sharing his tank with the basic clean up crew of crabs/snail and some stompella's and two dragonets. o and a lawn mower blenny, those fish should not ever bother him i wouldnt suspect, but if they ever become food for the octo i would be ok with that. mosthated Oct 25th, 2007, 06:59pm think i am going to name him BUD Animal Mother Oct 25th, 2007, 07:18pm Hah, how fun. Sounds like you got a spunky one. The Dragonets shouldn't be any threat no, but I wouldn't be so sure about that Blenny. They like to nip at things. Might not do it more than once though. :) Since they are generally sand and rock dwelling peaceful fish they probably won't last long. simple Oct 25th, 2007, 07:22pm Ok i think ill get me one too...It will be my first. cant wait! Im sure hell be more thank happy in 110 gallon =D monty Oct 25th, 2007, 07:30pm :welcome: Bud! Bud looks very speckled in that pic, almost like granite... is that his normal coloration? mosthated Oct 25th, 2007, 07:38pm dunno, that was my first time seeing him, and only time i might add! lol i just got him, my girl told me he was bright white when she opened the box he came in, but when she put him in the acclimation tank, aka plastic storage bin, lol he turned the color in the pic, i guess to match the carpet. simple Oct 25th, 2007, 08:21pm still hasnt come out? shipposhack Oct 26th, 2007, 02:10am Some octos hide for a while before they will interact. If the octo you received is Abdopus Aculeatus, it should be pretty interactive. Try to get another few pictures of him when he comes out again. simple Oct 27th, 2007, 12:14pm any updates with BUD? mosthated Oct 27th, 2007, 07:10pm he came out late last nite and was out this morning i didnt get any pics because my camera is dead, or the batteries are.. i gave him a piece of krill but i dont think he liked it. he just carried it around for a min, and droped it, it seemed interested in some of the hermit crabs but i didnt see him eat on, it was very cool watching him climb around, i just got home and i dont see him, i am sure he will venture out later.. simple Oct 27th, 2007, 07:24pm awesome. Hopefully mine is active as well.. mosthated Oct 27th, 2007, 07:27pm i was very impressed by his color changing, and the textures he shows. the textures are really wild.. i cant wait to get some pictures! someone talk Thales into letting me use his camera! lol mosthated Oct 27th, 2007, 07:44pm Should i worry about him not eating the krill? the tank is full or hermits and snails of all sizes so if he got hungry he would get him one right? mosthated Oct 27th, 2007, 07:48pm lol i found him, he doesnt like getting his picture taking! maybe it reminds him of capet surfing! simple Oct 28th, 2007, 12:26am do you think his diurnal or nocturnal? Or is it too early to tell? dwhatley Oct 28th, 2007, 03:54am Glad you bought some batteries! Good shot of the texture but I am afraid that you would need to borrow Thales as well as the camera to get the quality of pics he posts  I would try some live crabs or shrimp rather than counting on the snails and hermits (none of my mercs will touch krill, hermits or snails but they are more pickey than the larger octos). Small crabs seem to be the most widely accepted. mosthated Oct 28th, 2007, 07:28pm i feed him some raw shrimp, i think he ate some of it but its hard to say, he crawled off with it where i couldnt really see him, then finally found it laying in the sand it looks like he ate some of it, but like i said its hard to tell. I am going to order some crabs. "Should have already" how do you feed fidlers? i mean i am going to remove the pinchers but do you just drop them in the tank? "want they die if not eating immediatly?" or do i need to drop them in front of him? Bigpapa Oct 28th, 2007, 07:42pm I am curious bout that one too, oh and no they dont die--since my tank has had about 3 of them when I dropped them in for the octo and he didnt get em. Animal Mother Oct 28th, 2007, 09:03pm I would throw the fiddlers in one at a time where the octopus can see you dropping them in. If it's hungry it will immediately snatch the crab up. If they seem small you might drop in a second one after the octo is finished with the first one. If you put in several you run the risk of them dying in the rocks where you don't know they are dead and they foul up the water. mosthated Oct 28th, 2007, 09:10pm how long will they live underwater? DHyslop Oct 28th, 2007, 10:07pm They'll live a few weeks underwater. simple Oct 28th, 2007, 10:11pm I will be collecting my crabs on the beach in miami, will there be any problems with this? Also, in case of an emergency (ran out of crabs and i cant get to the beach) is it ok to buy crabs that are sold as bait at fishing store? Or are these treated with some sort of chemical? Nancy Oct 28th, 2007, 11:22pm Live crabs are inverts and are quite sensitive to chemicals. I've never heard of live crabs in a bait store being treated with chemicals. I believe others on this site have purchased crabs from bait stores. If you put them in your saltwater tank, the'll live a few weeks. If you give them a little habitat in a low plastic container with sand and a brackish "pond", they can live for years! Nancy simple Oct 28th, 2007, 11:39pm ok thank you, ill keep that in mind as an alternative. simple Oct 29th, 2007, 07:00pm ok well my crab collecting trip didnt exactly work out... all the crabs just kept running into little holes never to be seen again. Any one have any advice on catching them? Animal Mother Oct 29th, 2007, 07:07pm Bait and trap. Maybe a cup with a raw fish or shrimp in it. I dunno. simple Oct 29th, 2007, 07:11pm ok thanks i will try that. mosthated Oct 29th, 2007, 07:35pm lol i just order 10 fiddler crabs from aquaculter.com for 13$. about how often should i feed him? everyday or everyother day? Nancy Oct 29th, 2007, 07:55pm Feed him something every day. Give him a crab one day. See if he will take a piece of thawed frozen shrimp the second day. (I'm assuming these crabs are farily small). Watch to make sure he eats the whole thing within an hour or two, then remove the uneaten food. You can adjust the food - if some is uneaten, give him less the next time - although I know that's difficult with crabs! Nancy shipposhack Oct 29th, 2007, 08:52pm how long will they live underwater? A couple weeks. |
