View Full Version : Tonmocon I
o.vulgaris Aug 30th, 2003, 07:29pm So what about it, wouldn't it be good to meet all the people involved with TONMO, and to buy and sell any aquarium equipment/saltwater animals?
If we ever have one (looking forward to going if it's arranged) make sure to try and spot someone(Me) with a green t-shirt with a NRCC logo on it.
cheer's
cthulhu77 Aug 30th, 2003, 08:11pm I do believe that Tony (Tom?) is arranging a get together in 2004 in Baal-tigh-more...
Tonmocon it is!
tonmo Aug 30th, 2003, 08:51pm Correct... details to come.... :heee:
o.vulgaris Aug 30th, 2003, 09:07pm tonmo, we should get one going soon, next year sound's real good, if you need help i can make room in my schedule to help you out with some thing's, when it does happen be sure to pm me lol, so im prepared and ready also how about selling some tonmo apparel or clothes, I think that would be cool, a Tonmo t-shirt or something, how about a tonmo membership card, yeah that's cool, I should be the marketing director, hehe.
cthulhu77 Aug 30th, 2003, 10:32pm Oh please! Have you not been to the Tonmo shop???? Tony has everything from diapers to doughnuts there!
tonmo Aug 31st, 2003, 07:50am The TONMO.com Apparel Shop was closed a few months back, due to the fact that I was the only patron. I have a couple of good mugs and t-shirts... :-)
Will keep all posted as soon as I can nail some things down... will definitely take some time though... promises to be fun! Happy to take anyone's input into consideration, so feel free to PM me if you're inclined...
octapush Aug 31st, 2003, 03:00pm I would love to go to a convention!!! Count me in if you have one. Where would it be held as i live in canada??
tonmo Aug 31st, 2003, 03:09pm Pretty sure TONMOCON I will be at the Baltimore Aquarium... sometime 1st or 2nd quarter 2004. Will keep you all posted!
cthulhu77 Aug 31st, 2003, 03:11pm The consensus seems to be riding with Baltimore, MD...lots of local activities, etc...and Tony is happy there...
so we have that going for us! :D
Jeez...maybe they will do a Discovery special on us or something!!!
Greg
Clem Aug 31st, 2003, 04:56pm Tony et al,
I have two questions about Baltimore:
1. How deep into the wee-hours do Baltimore's finer pubs remain open?
2. Have Baltimore's finer pubs outlawed the awful habit of smoking?
If the answers are "12am" and "yes," there could be trouble.
Clem
WhiteKiboko Aug 31st, 2003, 08:07pm im pretty sure its 2am and other than a county the borders DC, i dont recall anything prohibiting smoking......
:cthulhu: :x Blue Laws
tonmo Aug 31st, 2003, 09:12pm Yes Clem, the night scene is an important consideration.
:glass:
Bald Evil Aug 31st, 2003, 11:36pm I live near Baltimore, and have good friends who are lifelong denizens of the place. If you give me a list of questions (including booze- and nightlife-related ones), I can certainly find the answers quickly. In fact, it would probably take less time to answer the booze-related questions than others. :P Party party!
o.vulgaris Sep 1st, 2003, 01:20am Yes Clem, the night scene is an important consideration.
:glass:
I say we meet at a bar or something, go wild and party all night, yeah!!!
tonmo, why not have the "convention" at the NRCC???
o.vulgaris Sep 1st, 2003, 01:23am I can help host it, yay!!!
tonmo Sep 1st, 2003, 07:54am tonmo, why not have the "convention" at the NRCC???
Would certainly be an appropriate place for a gathering, but I'm sticking w/ Baltimore Aquarium.
Tell you what, I'll let you know when further details are available! Will take some time for this to happen. [shooing the cooks from the kitchen...] :heee:
Bald Evil, sounds good, I'll be in touch, thanks!
corw314 Sep 1st, 2003, 09:01am Hey Tony!
Are you setting up a package deal? Hotel, Aquarium etc.? Will there be some sort of workshop? Should be great! I never got there cause of the blizzard last year.
Also, any word on your trip to the shore yet?
Carol
tonmo Sep 1st, 2003, 09:56am Shore trip... no word on that one yet (watch that thread in the Supporters forum for updates  ) I'll definitely let you know...
As for agenda and group rates, I'm thinking about all of these things, but nothing ready to announce at this time.

aww, I haven't subscribed yet, .....need to get the devil out (credit card), hehe, but serioully try and keep us updated, those of us who haven't subsribed yet lol. :)
How about greyhound, a bus trip sound's nice, I will personally make use of those extra flyer miles I have collected lol.You ahould take your time planning thing's for us,hehe, maybe a trip to a theme park or something, I don't really care, as long as we all meet up i'm fine with everything.
p.s. I don't believe in credit card's they give me the creep's... :goofysca:

As I work for the CANCER COUNCIL here in Victoria, I vote for a NON-SMOKING venue every time....
I'll be in Canada September/October next year - can you hold the convention then?
KRin
Steve O'Shea Sep 2nd, 2003, 12:05am ...... I'm a heavy smoker and even I'll cast a vote for a non-smoking venue (I can't stand the smell of other people's cigarettes). But I do need a drink.
We can always stand outside and have a wee drink (and gossip about those inside  ). Count us in (plural, singular?? who knows .... my Neil Diamond poster hasn't returned to its rightful place on the wall yet ... until it turns up Tintenfisch is on a slow boat to China).
Colin Sep 2nd, 2003, 03:59am I'll stand outside with you... hehehe As long as you can suffer the cigar smoke and understand a drunk scotsman from time to time LOL
Steve O'Shea Sep 2nd, 2003, 06:55am ..... a cigar would go down mighty fine right now, even though smoking is a wretched habit that we do not condone!!!! But Col, I had a hard time understanding you when you were sober!!
Tintenfisch's boat just took a U-turn south, and the Earth is flat!! Will she slip off into oblivion before her soul is saved? Personally I think so, for this most positively evil woman hid my keys in a ceramic peanut (the same ceramic peanut has a habit of disappearing), adding insult to injury to a tired old fella at ~ 10pm, still wounded by the untimely loss of his Neil D poster. This woman has no soul to lose.
cthulhu77 Sep 2nd, 2003, 07:56am So it sounds like Lady T is still being cruel...I didn't know they even made Neil Diamond posters still...hmmm. You must have loved the movie: "Saving Silverman"...
Re: Tonmocon...I think the aquarium idea is great...perhaps we could visit the lab also??? We should have enough time in the space of a weekend. The idea about lectures, etc is good too...or perhaps a free forum with a slide show or the likes of it. Pubs: smoke doesn't bother me, but I actually like the ones where you have to smoke outside...my eyes water in the real chimney bars, and I like the fresh air if I have to have a tobacco fix.
sounds like a good time!
Greg
Melissa Sep 2nd, 2003, 11:36am Booze, cigars, drunken Scots, I'll be right at home! Count me in! I don't care if the venue is a cardboard box, with or without smoking. That said, the aquarium is the best possible venue, and definitely doesn't allow smoking inside. Smoking inside is unpredictable, see today's news from Baltimore:
http://www.insidebaltimore.com/news/local/baco-smoking-ban0725.shtml
Melissa
Clem Sep 2nd, 2003, 01:41pm Tony et al,
Hmmm, this does sound pretty cool... (http://www.aqua.org/immersiontours_sharksleepover.html)
Maybe not quite as cool as a sleepover in the AMNH, but, still, pretty cool...
At least, it would occasion that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to call my friends and announce that I do, in fact, "sleep with the fishes" (but not, I'd hasten to add, in the Troy McClure sense of the phrase).
:goofysca:
Clem
o.vulgaris Sep 2nd, 2003, 04:55pm okay, so are we going to party or what, steve, i look forward to hearing about your recent discoveries and so forth, I think I might enjoy this "convention" if it does become a choice, colin i'll see ya there...you to clem, hehe. :)
p.s. I hope no one is faint at heart, hahaha....
tonmo Sep 2nd, 2003, 08:30pm Colin, will definitely be with you in the cigar lounge...
All, I'm not ready just yet to take attendence, but will do as soon as I can (need a date first, ay?)... I know there are lots of takers already...
KRin, honestly not sure if I can move it out to that date... but there'd be nothing stopping us from doing it again! :) Possibly, though... really, honestly not sure yet, will advise in due time.

The only place I'm going in the US itself is Washington to visit the Smithsonian ( a life long dream of mine). I'll be in eastern Canada mostly - a friend of mine died early last year and this is mostly a memory trip for me.
I love a good drink - nice glass of white sparkling for me. I'll be the one with the large "no smoking" badge - hey, it comes with the job! I'm sure you don't need me to trot out all the facts of why you shouldn't smoke. I don't care if you smoke (or set yourself on fire, take hard drugs, whatever) just don't stand near me...I'm quite easy to get on with, really.
KRin (whi is really getting fed up with being sick)
o.vulgaris Sep 3rd, 2003, 05:13pm krin, I totally agree with you, smoking has too many hazard's and I don't like being around other's who do it lol, I would rather just leave If I were in that situation.
Sedusa Sep 3rd, 2003, 06:29pm well, I think we can pretty much all agree on the pub tho! I wonder if the aquarium could be convinced to give a behind the scenes tour of the cephs if they know that a bunch of crazed ceph nuts are having a gathering...
o.vulgaris Sep 3rd, 2003, 07:41pm well, I think we can pretty much all agree on the pub tho!
That's what i've been saying all along. :D
TonmoCon in a pub with drink's on the house, ah *sigh*, life is bliss. :)
cthulhu77 Sep 4th, 2003, 08:56am I am sure we will get a tour from the aquarium, but I can guarantee there will be NO smoking there!
Greg
WhiteKiboko Sep 4th, 2003, 09:50am I am sure we will get a tour from the aquarium, but I can guarantee there will be NO smoking there!
yeah, theyve been harassing the dolphins to quit for at least a year now.... now if only someone was just brave enough to take the chewing tobacco away from the sharks....
o.vulgaris Sep 4th, 2003, 04:32pm yeah, theyve been harassing the dolphins to quit for at least a year now.... now if only someone was just brave enough to take the chewing tobacco away from the sharks....
hehe... :P :P :P :P
cthulhu77 Sep 4th, 2003, 10:38pm At least when THEIR teeth turn yellow they can fall out and push in the new ones!
Tentacular! Sep 4th, 2003, 10:51pm now if only someone was just brave enough to take the chewing tobacco away from the sharks....
Wean them off the tobacco using nicotine infused seaweed jerky? I'm currently trying to quit smoking by chewing copious amounts of gum. My jaw is aching but its 72 hours and still going strong.
:goofysca: :chillpil: :heee:
The Moog Sep 5th, 2003, 01:11pm Why do you arrange a get-together now, when I'm back in the UK??!
Ah well, only 1000+ tonmo posts to catch up on, been busy coming home, getting engaged and trying to get on with new job.
I'm sure the colour of the page has changed, or is it my crappy university monitor?
Ali
Melissa Sep 5th, 2003, 01:52pm You have good eyes for color: http://www.tonmo.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1089&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Maybe we'll be able to lure you back for TONMOcon!
Melissa
o.vulgaris Sep 5th, 2003, 07:34pm ....I still have my hopes up that TonmoCon will be held in a pub, I'll be the first to lecture you guy's on how to slurp properly, hehe. :grad:
Clem Sep 5th, 2003, 09:56pm Ah well, only 1000+ tonmo posts to catch up on, been busy coming home, getting engaged...

cthulhu77 Sep 5th, 2003, 10:09pm I here ya Moog...I am tying the knot in November...YIKES!
o.vulgaris Sep 5th, 2003, 11:38pm good thing I'm not in a serious realationship...geez, you guy's make it sound horrid and very frightening, hehe.
here's my though's on commitment: :goofysca: hehe, j/k.
tonmo Sep 6th, 2003, 08:50am Hey, congrats on all the pending wedding vows out there. I'm a big proponent of it! :D Enjoy!
cthulhu77 Sep 6th, 2003, 09:21am The most frightening thing about it is the the Mother-in-law and her need to spend an excessive amount of money on the wedding...we had planned on something small, and the whole affair has taken on a life of its own, like a shoggoth gone out of control!!!
Perhaps I shall just shout "teke-li-li" and just give in...
We are going to have a plush Cthulhu on the altar though...don't worry, I will send in some pics!
Greg
corw314 Sep 6th, 2003, 10:36am Congrats to both of you!!!!
Carol
Phil Sep 6th, 2003, 01:14pm Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage, sister.
I should be there; I'll check my shift patterns.
Phil
BTW, You too Greg!
o.vulgaris Sep 6th, 2003, 05:48pm Congrat's to everyone who is officially tying the knot! :D
cthulhu77, you should just give in, we guy's never win, hehe. :P
...plus when it's a mother and daughter thing it's a bit overpowering, they triump all the time lol, j/k.
cthulhu77 Sep 7th, 2003, 09:20am Oh trust me...I threw in the towel on that whole operation a loooong time ago! (how can a dress you are going to wear ONE time cost so much??? )
Ah, its ok anyway...makes her happy, makes me happy, right?
Besides, she wants to get cuttlefish...how wrong could she be?
Greg

hahaha, I ask myself the same thing, "how can a dress be so expensive when she's only going to wear it one time", It's one of those mysteries of life I guess  , one thing is for certain, us guy's don't know the answer to that lol.
dave :)
Steve O'Shea Sep 7th, 2003, 05:03pm ..... why don't you get married at TONMOCON?
cthulhu77 Sep 8th, 2003, 09:29am Oh, the look of suprise on her mothers face would be worth a million dollars to me ...I shall have to suggest that at our next dinner...hehe...
greg
o.vulgaris Sep 8th, 2003, 09:38pm hehe, I would be surprised if her mother didn't have a heart attack or something at dinner, I don't think she would like such a wonderful and special ceremony to be held in the convention, especially if the convention is taking place in a rugged old pub somewhere lol. :P
tonmo Sep 8th, 2003, 09:56pm Ok, I can see this thing is coming together...
Agenda:
1pm Arrival
2pm Cocktails
4pm Greg's Wedding in the Baltimore Aquarium lobby
5:30pm Rousing chorus of "For she's a jolly good fellow" for Greg's mother-in-law
6pm Dinner at some sushi bar, Fujawis Sake's choice
8pm Smoking break
9pm Octopus discussion at some Baltimore pub
3:30am Group collection to help bail o.vulgaris out of county jail
8am Breakfast
10am Visiting hours for o.vulgaris (since we only raised $12.85 the night before)

oh god that is so funny, im trying to gasp for air, im rolling on the floor at the moment for this is one of the best jokes I've heard in my life, persay it includes me, hehe.
best regard's,
-dave
o.vulgaris Sep 8th, 2003, 10:59pm this thread is going to be a first on my favorites list, yup!
... you guy's could only raise $12.85, that's not fair. :P
You guy's know that if we behave like party animal's we might actually get arrested considering that we are a pretty big group, he, at least you'll know i'll be the first to get the free hospitality at a local police station, ah I can see it now, 3 meal's a day, life is bliss. :jester:
Sedusa Sep 9th, 2003, 03:53pm Hey, we're going to spend the rest of our cash at the pub! Can you blame us? Be glad we didn't tip better or there wouldn't even be $12.85! :)
Steve O'Shea Sep 9th, 2003, 04:08pm .... doesn't sound like 2 days is enough to me ... you'll need to run a few parallel sessions (general frivolity, penal [note spelling] reform, live animal's and culture, science and misc nonsense, fossils [come on Phil], news and content updates .....) ... and then fit in trips to prison, staggering sesions at some pub, trips to aquaria, prize evening for the most ludicrous costume and hair do ....
Should you not be looking at a 3-day schedule at the very least... ? I'd hate to get there and then say "hi/bye" (despite a few of you definitely appearing to be social misfits  ).
Colin Sep 9th, 2003, 04:48pm I agree, a long way to go for just one session or two with 'the falling down water'....
o.vulgaris Sep 9th, 2003, 05:03pm I say 4 day's is about right lol, We should all go on a tour or something, greyhound anyone??? :)
Sedusa Sep 9th, 2003, 06:08pm do we have a tentative timeframe yet? I'm planning on bailing out of the country sometime next year and I want to make sure I can make it to Tonmocon :) Altho I have plenty of time and no plane tickets as of yet!
tonmo Sep 9th, 2003, 08:17pm I plan on having more information about timing after October... at the moment I anticipate sometime during the first 6 months of 2004... more specifically, late Q1, early Q2, but I really can't be sure at this time.
There is a certain TONMO.com member who will be helping drive this come November. Details should be available during that month. Hope this works for people!
o.vulgaris Sep 10th, 2003, 04:34pm I should make a thread titled "tonmo cookoff" , I suppose we're going to eat something along the way right, don't want to starve myself, hehe.I'm hungry right now, you see that, now you got me talking about food. :P
Melissa Sep 10th, 2003, 05:00pm Food is my favorite subject! I'm happy to help with snacks. We should have trilobite cookies.
Melissa
Steve O'Shea Sep 10th, 2003, 07:17pm .... I'll bring the squid (one of these things should be enough to feed ~ 1200 members).
Is the $12.85-man bionic (cheap parts)? Will he rust? Does he need batteries? Maybe if we get to play 'pin the tail on the $12.85-man' we could raise $13.82.
cthulhu77 Sep 11th, 2003, 09:30am Ahh...the delicious aroma of ammonia arising from the deli table, with pickled octopus arms, trilobite cookies, and sun-dried loligo poppers...enough to make one drool!
All with the strains of Neil Diamond in the backround...and T'fisch will be missing it all!
Greg
octobloke Sep 11th, 2003, 01:08pm How about getting some T-shirts made up for the convention. Could revive the tonmo store. We could then get our names printed on the back so everybody knows who everybody is.
Phil Sep 11th, 2003, 01:54pm How about getting some T-shirts made up for the convention. Could revive the tonmo store. We could then get our names printed on the back so everybody knows who everybody is.
Do Moderators get their name printed in black with everyone else in blue? Perhaps Tony could wear a Crown of Loligo too, so we know who is in charge.
Tani gets a sedan chair, by the way.
Tintenfisch Sep 11th, 2003, 05:51pm Perhaps we should have T-shirts made with 8 sleeves - moderators could have two extra for tentacles! And Steve's will need to be made of sturdy canvas, with lots of shiny buckles on the back. ;)
:tentacle:
Jean Sep 11th, 2003, 05:56pm Morning Kat :D I see we slaves to obsession are at the office earlyish (I've been here about a hour but couldn't put together anything coherent til I had some CAFFIENE)
And Steve's will need to be made of sturdy canvas, with lots of shiny buckles on the back.
Might I suggest some tranqs in his :wine: specially if anyone mentions deep sea fishers!! (yep, I watched the interview on Sunday!!!!!)

Steve & Kat,
Have you two noted the proximity of the Aquarium to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane? It's been boarded-up for years, ever since Dr. Chilton went missing and the funding dried up.
Clem
cthulhu77 Sep 11th, 2003, 09:39pm "do, dah...etc...from transylvania...ahhuhuh"
WAaaaaaaay too much to-do about clothing...!
T-shirts would definitely be in order...

tonmo Sep 11th, 2003, 11:01pm TONMOCON ROLL CALL
If you're seriously interested in TONMOCON I (to take place sometime during the first half of next year), join the new TONMOCON Usergroup to express your interest. Joining this group DOES NOT MEAN you are signing up or that you are committed or anything like that. It's just an indicator for those of us interested in knowing which members are interested in attending.
So... how do you join the group? Click on the "Usergroups" link at the very top of this page, in the right-hand box. Then select the "TONMOCON Groupies" group, and then click the Join button.... here's the link right into Usergroups for your convenience:
Usergroups (http://www.tonmo.com/phpBB/groupcp.php)
After joining, I get an email, and then will approve you and you'll be added. I'll get to this each night, Eastern Time. Thanks!
o.vulgaris Sep 12th, 2003, 01:05am how about hat's? :)

And I have just found you a really neat design for the T-shirt!
I still get the ocassional science fiction (NEVER call it sci-fi in my hearing) and just got a copy of the final issue of MIMOSA. On the front cover is a giant squid being interviewed. Its by fan artists Peggy Ransom and Teddy Harvia - its great and would look wonderful on a shirt.
I have contacted the zine editors for an email address. The picture is a little large to scan and show you and is on blue card but if I get permission to show it to you I can scan a bit of it.
It's one way I can be involved in the convention as I can't be there, sniff.

I'm going to Canada mainly next September and October with a side trip to the Smithsonian. A friend of mine died last year, I'll visit her grave in Ottawa with a friend, she her folks in Halifax, got to a charity auction in Toronto and maybe see a few sights.
I'm already excited!

Picture is at home. Will send weekend.
Artist has had some small stokes so will not be able to redraw the squid but the other artist involved I know and he may redraw it.
KRin.
voltron Sep 18th, 2003, 09:25am if you need help with getting that pic ready for the shirt i would be glad to help. I´m a designer and just finished some shirts for band merchandise, i got a little experience in these things :madsci:
o.vulgaris Sep 18th, 2003, 06:35pm it's been a rough day for me today, blasted co-student's kept nagging at me to join a ecology club, I had no choice but to join lol.
So krin, do you have tonmo's consent to make/design the t-shirts. don't want to violate anything, in case his logo is patented or protected, Im mean if you make 100k in profit (very likely to happen, hehe) by selling tonmo t-shirt's he might want some of his money lol, becuase technically if he doesn't know about it and you decide to go through with it and his logo is patented well you can get in big trouble mister. :grad:
Just some advise lol.
Just in case you decide to do this have tonmo's consent first lol. :)
Sedusa Sep 18th, 2003, 07:09pm One doesn't have to mark up the price on CafePress items, altho if whoever decided to make them did, I suggest that all of the money go back into Tonmo (or at least a Tonmocon drink fund)
Sedusa Sep 18th, 2003, 07:15pm A contest for logos actually might be rather fun.... I envision a massive ceph with pints in it's 8 arms.... Oh, and Tony definitely has the final say on whose design goes! Altho maybe he'll let us all vote?
TaningiaDanae Sep 18th, 2003, 07:25pm My Dear Mr. Sedusa,
I was most disappointed in your avatar photo. You bear absolutely no resemblance to a hideous, gelatinous tentacled abomination from the depths of the Abyss, as you represented in a self-description posted earlier. Accordingly, you have been denounced to the RPD (R'lyeh Police Department) for commission of a 666.6, Impersonating An Old One.
They're coming to get you. Pack your water wings, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
:cthulhu:
PS: Cute pic! :)

Believe me, I know about artists consent! My late husband was a cartoonist and I am the executor of his estate...attached is the cartoon squid I thought might be a nice T-shirt design.
The artists are Peggy Ranson and Teddy harvia. Peggy is one who has had the stokes. I can get hold of Teddy for permission to redraw the cover. Until I know if there is interest, I haven't done any following up yet. It needs to be simplfied for a T-shirt. I just liked the idea of a squid being interviewed...
Any extra details can be added by the final design artist.

Steve O'Shea Sep 19th, 2003, 10:00am I equate; picture matches online persona; as an aside, nice to see a face as an avatar too; may there be more, soon!
You learn a lot from a face (I maintain)

o.vulgaris Sep 19th, 2003, 05:06pm for some reason people mistake me for wolverine from the movie x-men, they say I look like him except im younger, go figure, I was alway's a dark and secretive figure in the mist of darkness.
o.vulgaris Sep 19th, 2003, 05:16pm oop's, just noticed we got off-topic, so will there be free tonmocon patches, I say that when we go to tonmocon we all should have those stick-on patches so we know who we are, you know the one's that say, "hello my name is":, ill write $12.85 so you'll be able to recognize me and get a chance to get to know me better before they whisk me off to the local Police station. :P
these apparel issues might result in tonmo underwear, yikes!

Ar, I am so in lust with Wolerine from XMen2 so that explains why I was taken with your photo! At my age these movie stars crushes are just weird and disturbing!

The "hotties" thread in the Supporters' Forum is all about movie star crushes. :D What's not to like? You're unlikely to be in a position to embarrass yourself in front of a movie star. It's just too easy to make a fool of yourself if you (I mean me) have a crush on a real person. Fortunately, I haven't heard of squid crushes, even on TONMO!

Sedusa Sep 22nd, 2003, 03:24pm Well, I just got sick of having the same old avatar and wanted a change without violating anyone's copyrights (and photos on my digital camera are definitely not violating anybody else's!). Yep, that's me (In human form, muahahaha!). I do agree, it's nice to see people's faces. On topic, you'll all recognize me at Tonmocon. Hooray for steering off topic posts back on track! hehe...
Steve O'Shea Sep 22nd, 2003, 04:21pm Aye; right back at ya .... O on a bad day (he's since shaven).
