o.vulgaris Sep 23rd, 2003, 09:52pm hmm, I say to myself, will we have tonmo sticker's to put on our car????
....it will alway's remain a mystery....unless tony stop's by and post' the answer lol. :P
Melissa Sep 23rd, 2003, 09:59pm You'll have plenty of time to set up stickers. It'll be in the spring, and stickers don't take that long to print. But you might start thinking about family-friendly designs.
Melissa
tonmo Sep 23rd, 2003, 10:04pm Melissa, good answer! Now, o., will those stickers come before or after the t-shirts and hats you're having made up for us? :D Hmmm, that $12.85 is starting to look a little steep... :D :D
Sorry o. and all that I haven't been posting much as of late. I'll be back... just engrossed with work, and am battling some carpel tunnel... :x a few nights off is good for me... I shall return!
cthulhu77 Sep 24th, 2003, 09:25am I hear ya!! Work,stress....yikes. I am actually looking forward to a weekend of cleaning snake cages. kinda sad.
Don't worry, Tony...we always know you are there...like big brother or something. :D

who me, you want me to design the shirts, I thought we agreed that melissa would do it hehe, with 12.85 maybe I can get a few stickers printed but that's about it lol. Well all I know is that when we get to tonmocon we can work on the stuff there lol. I've been rather busy too, i'm online one day and the next im not lol....the result is work overload, or shall I say school-work overload, it's a hard knock life for a 23 year old.Yup!
I shall return also, with sticker ideas in mind! :talker:
corw314 Sep 25th, 2003, 07:03am Pens.... Will there be pens with the Tonmo logo on them?????

Hello OV
Trust me, no one wants me to design anything! This is all far enough in advance that you can work on stickers over your winter break :P
Melissa
Sedusa Sep 25th, 2003, 03:49pm Speaking of stickers, Cthulhu77, was it you that had the "Here, fishy fishy..." sticker idea? I think you should sell those on cafepress.com... I know I'd buy more than a couple! (And that could make a good shirt as well)
Saul
Sedusa Sep 25th, 2003, 03:49pm NOTE: I didn't mean that would be a good idea for the Tonmocon, I;d just like to see those stickers available!

Hi melissa, so a immediate course of action is due then, I don't know how to design vinyl graphic's....oh where's a sticker expert when you need one.
cthulhu77 Sep 25th, 2003, 07:19pm Saul...the stickers and t-s will be available shortly...just working out the bugs, and making sure that Tonmo gets its due also!!!
o.vulgaris Sep 28th, 2003, 12:34pm hmm, tonmo portrait's anyone??
krin Oct 5th, 2003, 04:07am I've done a design for a con badge - flat, in felt, of a comic style squid.
Do I now send one to you Tonmo to get it approved? I haven't a digital camera so am unable to send a picture.
KRin
tonmo Oct 5th, 2003, 07:59am Sure, PM me and we'll coordinate, thanks!
o.vulgaris Oct 5th, 2003, 01:54pm krin, send one my way too lol. :D
rachibelle87 Oct 5th, 2003, 03:14pm HI all, I am new to tonmo (just a few weeks on), and am currently working on my tank. Can anyone tell me what goes on at a convention and about how much it would cost? I am only a teen so any help would be great.
tonmo Oct 5th, 2003, 03:24pm Hi rachibelle87, and welcome to TONMO.com!
The "TONMOCON" convention represents an "official" meeting of people who visit TONMO.com and are interested in octopuses. TONMOCON is something we've been discussing on and off for a long time now, well over a year. We're finally ready to begin planning.
The agenda has not yet been laid out, but we're making some headway in pulling this together. What gets covered will be somewhat dependent on who signs up. For example, if we have tank owners and experts in our presence (and I'm quite sure we will), we'll set aside some time/sessions to discuss tank ownership and related issues.
No price is set yet, and the timing isn't confirmed, but we are targeting springtime of 2004 for our first convention. We're strongly considering the Baltimore Aquarium and Marriott hotel for the location.
Details will follow in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
lotus101 Oct 5th, 2003, 05:30pm I actually think it would be neat having it around the time TONMO was actually put on, like an aniversary type thing???
o.vulgaris Oct 5th, 2003, 09:44pm well since I'm 23 and going for my Master's degree in Marine biology spring break would be okay, I could settle for the marriot instead of cancun.  :heee:
Fujisawas Sake Oct 7th, 2003, 04:15am TONMOCON sounds pretty wild... Probably better than Anime Expos last year...
Wow, Baltimore? *sigh* I guess Monterey Bay is a longshot. Oh well...
Sounds like a great idea!
Sushi and Sake,
John
Chamkeeper Oct 8th, 2003, 03:15am Im in,
Baltimore is about 3 or so hour from home. If we want to see the aquarium as a group, which should prove interesting, we need to get tickets ahead of time. My last trip the the National Aquarium, I waited 3 hours before they would let me enter, tickets are time stamped (for entry) so folks can actually enjoy the experience. Lots of fun stuff at the Inner Harbor, where the aquarium is located, some old US Navy & Coast Guard boats, a huge sports network pub, (ESPN zone for those in the colonies), and great resturants abound.
Melissa Oct 8th, 2003, 10:01am Chamkeeper, thanks for telling us this. Aquarium visits will be set up far in advance, and this just emphasizes how important that will be. Oops, now that I've said that, I'd better make sure it happens. :talker: The best part is that we'll see you there!
Melissa
Castor Oct 8th, 2003, 10:18am You can add one more warm body to the list. Sounds great!
krin Oct 9th, 2003, 06:13am You can add one more warm body to the list. Sounds great!
Sorry, I had a weird mental picture of a warm body when I read that. It comes from having a late husband who was a cartoonist - I tend to think in pictures. I don't think he ever drew a squid but he did draw Cathulu(sp?) making a phone call...
I sent the squid badge to Tonmo today - sorry, the letter got left out. The badge should have a safety pin sewn to the back.

Not really - I suppose I could just put it on the scanner and see if it will scan. I don't have access to a digital camera...
KRin
Melissa Oct 13th, 2003, 02:31am KRin, we can wait as long as it takes for you to make friends with someone with the camera or for it to get to Tony and for him to say "Oh my, this is too good for all these yabbos!" I have every confidence that your embroidery is just too good for us. We'll be grateful for whatever you send!
Melissa
tonmo Oct 15th, 2003, 09:31pm Oh my, this is too good for all these yabbos! :heee:
Just got it today. I'll keep y'all in suspense, consider it incentive to come to the convention! I'll share with the staff... I say it's a winner, Krin, Melissa and/or I will be in touch via PM in the coming days/weeks re: next steps... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An aerosol can, a 12-headed cockroach, and a big foot :heee:
Sedusa Oct 16th, 2003, 06:25am Are we approaching a more approximate date? (I am trying to figure out how I can cram my Thai savings [I plan on documenting the native ceph species] with my Tonmocon expedition [I plan on draining many pints] and hoping to do a 3-6 month foray to the atlantic next year if I can [of course dealing with cephs])...
the future looks very squishy but vertebrae are for the weak :)

Melissa Oct 16th, 2003, 11:15am Hi Saul
A more approximate date is not before April, maybe May. Nothing is settled. I hope this approximation is helpful for you.

o.vulgaris Nov 7th, 2003, 07:58pm so any new info about the tonmo convention, anything for certain at the moment melissa/tony that you can tell us? :)
Melissa Nov 7th, 2003, 09:09pm I'm really glad that so many of you are enthusiastic for TONMOcon. :) Those of you who have mailed me with your great ideas and suggestions for TONMOcon, please keep them coming!
There's a fair bit of logistics to planning such an event, like getting the conference rooms, arranging other details, and making sure that key presenters and exhibitions are able to be there. As soon as we have dates, locations and so on arranged, this is where the information will be announced. I promise to be loud enough so that you'll all know!
Sorry if you feel I haven't kept you in the loop. I have a fair bit to do before Monday, and then news will start coming as we settle the first details. I'm really excited about this event.

Woo-hoo!

Melissa Nov 19th, 2003, 10:18am Great! We are all really pleased to hear that. The catch is that you're on the planning committee! You get a $20 long distance phone card and the numbers for the key people at various aquariums.
There is a NASA event at the aquarium in Coney Island on Sunday the 30th. Let me know if we should try to go together.

anything I could help with mel?
hmm, I want to be in the planning commitee too hehe. :P
Maybe it would be proper to set up a mailing list of tonmocon attendees, a yahoo group maybe?
sound's like a good idea, we can talk about the coodinating of the event?
TaningiaDanae Nov 20th, 2003, 11:04pm Melissa, unfortunately I can't make it on the 30th. However, I do want to get together (will PM you) and find out about this phone card thing as well. Funny, I thought the venue was decided upon already (Baltimore Aquarium)?
I finally read this entire thread and was surprised at how little I missed  I was under the impression that the dates, location, etc. were a done deal. That's what I get for being outta da loop!
For my part, it would be best if the dates coincided with a time that school was out -- e.g., the week of Easter vacation, Memorial Day weekend, or early July. Otherwise Evan would have to take both a Friday and a Monday off, and that would of course depend upon his exam schedule.
Of course, if it is scheduled such that Evan cannot go, it presents other problems. He's still not an adult and doesn't have anyone to stay with, so Richard and I going alone is out of the question. In that case, I would have to go by myself, which presents yet another problem. I don't want to stay in a hotel room without a roommate, because that just isn't a good idea for a woman nowadays (I read the news a lot, and believe me, sh*t happens).
So it would really be helpful for me to know the exact schedule for the event. I suppose I'd have some say in this since I've been shanghaied onto the Planning Committee ("When it's least expected, you're elected.... :P "), but of course the consensus rules.
Anyway, that's how things stand with me now.
Tani
Melissa Nov 21st, 2003, 11:28am Hi Tani
Nothing is settled, not even location. We have to work with the location on scheduling, but all this should be settled soon. We are really close to settling these items.
After that, I'll beg for help, saying "We need someone to ----." Fill in the blank. Options include but are not limited to: give us suggestions on dining and nightlife in X, post this announcement on other ceph-related sites, negotiate group room rates at these hotels, make sure that this AV equipment will be in this room at this time, translate this announcement into Esperanto and so on. Lots of persnickety mundane tasks for all!
Dave, there is a group function here on TONMO and all of you who expressed interest in TONMOcon will receive messages about that. If you said you weren't interested in the poll, go back and vote again, this time saying yes, and you'll be added. (That's for YOU, Tani!)
Melissa
tonmo Nov 21st, 2003, 09:37pm Maybe it would be proper to set up a mailing list of tonmocon attendees, a yahoo group maybe? sound's like a good idea, we can talk about the coodinating of the event?
Er, no Yahoo groups, please... the functionality we need to communicate is right here!
Appreciate your enthusiasm, O... we'll get there soon enough, but we have to work deliberately on this to keep it focused, to ensure some level of success, methinks. Thanks!
supernick Nov 21st, 2003, 11:47pm Since being here for a bit, I've noticed that a lot of people are here in California.

But, anywhere on the wwest coast will work for me.
Melissa Nov 22nd, 2003, 12:55pm Hi supernick
TONMOcon should be so successful that we have to do another. It sounds funny to say that this is why we're not yet decided on the location, but every site offers something different and it's not clear which is the best for us. Second time around is always easier because you have a better idea right away of what's necessary.
That said, there's no need to wait for TONMOcon to say "I'm going to Monterey Bay, want to join me?" So, if I go to the west coast, I'll let you know!
Melissa
o.vulgaris Nov 22nd, 2003, 01:17pm I had my hopes on the National Aquarium In Baltimore. They have discount's for group's and best of all they give you a great tour!
I have no doubt one on thing, that I know for sure that will happen during tonmocon,...tonmo apparel. Those of us who haven't already bought apparel from the online store will be able to buy during tonmocon, it's obvious. :)

I just thought of the master plan! :D We go to monterey And Jared can arrange everything. The members get all non-members attending in as guests, all others get in free though Jared because he said he worked there. we all pitch in and have a big tonmo dinner in the dining room like buisness partys do. we can probably, at somepoint reeserve the ceph exibit JUST FOR US!!! i even thoughtr up great id card for us.
it is:
Hello my screen name is supernick but my real
is Nicholas! Tony can arrange that and the rst is in Jared's hands!
we'r counting on you! :notworth: :notworth:
Melissa Nov 25th, 2003, 11:42pm Hello Nicholas
What you describe is not that far off from what I'm doing: I'm calling the aquariums, saying "TONMO would like to have a meeting, a few lectures, a tour, and we expect approximately N people from TONMO but are happy to have the public in on this too" and so on. I'm asking about group rates, room reservations and rentals, and even catering. Then we have to compare what dates work for them with what dates work for us.
The exhibit organizers and curators are really interesting and enthusiastic. They'll make things go well, too, and I'll try to set up a tour with someone at the aquarium for us.
Sorry to bore you with these details - but maybe some of you will feel less out of the loop knowing what stage we are at organizing TONMOcon.
Melissa
tonmo Nov 26th, 2003, 12:03am Let me clarify here that no one should be calling any aquariums or any other facilities on behalf of TONMO.com or this initiative, except for Melissa and any designates. Thanks!

Fujisawas Sake Nov 30th, 2003, 03:50am Wow...sounds cool. But I, too, am short of funds, and couldn't make it... Have fun for me, though!

krin Nov 30th, 2003, 08:13pm All, please note that for technical reasons not worth getting into, I needed to delete the TONMO.com Groupies Usergroup... As of now, the list of members tentatively planning to attend are as follows. If you're not on the list but plan to come, just let us know by replying here, thanks!
I actually won't be physically at the convention as I'm not travelling until October-Nov next year. I will be sending one of my toy squids to attend on my behalf. I also want to help in any way I can from this distance. I still want to make the con badges.

o.vulgaris Nov 30th, 2003, 08:52pm tony is that the whole list, I swear I thought it was bigger, hmm, must have been a glitch I guess.
corw314 Dec 7th, 2003, 08:58pm Any updates????
Melissa Dec 7th, 2003, 10:58pm Hi Carol
We're working on dates, it looks like early April or mid-May in the northeastern US. Does sound possible for you? We're still talking with aquariums, and one person we need on this is in Japan for another week! When he returns, we can be more definite. Sorry to be so shy about the details but they're just not concrete enough to say "save the date!"
Melissa
corw314 Dec 8th, 2003, 06:47am Sounds very possible to me!!!! Actually I plan on it!!!
Carol :D

MelissaM, I beleive you mean northwestern U.S. :D
o.vulgaris Dec 13th, 2003, 05:42pm oh, if possible I will see if family want's to come to tonmocon with me too. :)
Melissa Dec 18th, 2003, 07:35pm We'd love everyone to bring their families! My mother and my 8 year old nephew, Darth Evan, will come with me.
How does April 2 - 4 sound to everyone? What do you all think of Boston? Nothing is definite, but it's getting closer. So don't buy your plane tickets yet, but you might consider clearing your calendar for those days...
Melissa
corw314 Dec 18th, 2003, 11:00pm Yesssss.... Already put in for timeoff from work and have a babysitter for the weekend!!! But... Now I'm wondering if we should bring Jess...There would be enough to keep a very precocious 6 year old busy???
Carol
Melissa Dec 19th, 2003, 10:35am Hi Carol
I'm sure the New England Aquarium would have plenty to amuse Jess. Some of TONMOcon will probably go over her head. I expect some of the info imparted by Steve O and Kat to go over my head. Tony plans on bringing his children. So while I would not be able to plan something parallel that was geared toward little ones, there could be enough children to merit thinking about that.
Would you regret any limitations on your time to spend with other TONMOcon attendees? In all honesty, I probably wouldn't bring my nephew without another adult, even though I know he'll be very, very interested. But that probably says more about me than TONMOcon or my nephew.
Melissa
Steve O'Shea Dec 19th, 2003, 12:31pm I expect some of the info imparted by Steve O and Kat to go over my head.
... no danger of that, at least from me  Coz I don't know many big words I resort to facial expressions (that nobody can understand) and poking fun at the audience. Kat knows heaps of big words', and where to put apos'trophe's in those words' so that people' ca'n under'stand (fortunately one need not worry about such matters in spoken English 8) ).
o.vulgaris Dec 19th, 2003, 04:39pm well, my brother has agreed to come along, can't say much about my mother or my father. :(
tonmo Dec 19th, 2003, 08:36pm Actually, if we go to Boston, I'm not sure whether my family will be attendance or not... If they do, they'll likely be doing other things for at least some of the time...
TaningiaDanae Dec 20th, 2003, 09:23am Yes! April 2-4 sounds great 'cause it probably coincides with our Evan's Easter vacation (Darth Evan? I love it!), and of course he will be joining Richard and me at TONMOcon. Richard is a retired high school biology teacher with an interest in nature photography and evolution, so there will be plenty to hold his interest. As for 15-year-old Evan, he is more inclined towards business, finance, politics, and history, but I think he'll have fun because of the good company and the fact that Boston is reputed to have kick-ass pizza. Besides, he's anxious to meet Steve-O' who he is convinced is a figment of my imagination (despite, or perhaps because of, seeing photos of him in the curly blonde wig).
Melissa Dec 20th, 2003, 12:14pm Tani, I'm really glad you can make it! I wondered whether anyone would bow out because April 4 is palm Sunday, but the fact that it is Easter/Passover/spring break for a number of schools is terrific.
I bet your Evan would love the Science Center in Boston, if he could be torn away from TONMOcon.
Melissa
o.vulgaris Dec 20th, 2003, 10:01pm I think I can make it for that date, and so can my brother, I will need to take a few day's of from school and my brother will call in sick I suppose, what's nice is that we are both undergrad's with a B.S. in oceanic biology so he will be up to pace in the discusion's too,... hopefully. :heee:
-dave :D
supernick Dec 21st, 2003, 12:29pm Yeah,
Just like O, i think i have school on those dates.
But i am willing to play hookie if it is in monterey 'cause it is so mucjh better than boston. Please! :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth:
corw314 Dec 27th, 2003, 08:31am Any more info???? :)
Carol
Melissa Dec 27th, 2003, 12:05pm We are all left hanging until after the holidays - I can't really expect to get the important people on the phone until after the new year. :( But the date looks good for enough people that we'll try to stick with it.
Melissa
