With all of the documentary activity going on in the Squid Cave (Steve and Kat's laboratory), and the promise of yet more exciting discoveries to come, perhaps Hollywood will finally get around to developing a property or two about big teuthids and the men and women who love them. If that happens, who should play Steve O'Shea, and who should play Kat Bolstad?

WK,

Alan Cumming is an inspired choice, and certainly has the vocal chops to pull off "Song Sung Blue."

OK, first of all, if Johnny Depp's involved, I'm playing my own sweet self.
But I have to say, it would be cool if Julia Stiles would do the honors, since her film career seems to be tracking my life anyway (with a few exceptions) - first Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You and now a student at Wellesley, in Mona Lisa Smile. People keep telling me I look like her, but for the record, I'm older, so she looks like me. She's my stunt-double, you know. :P
And we did come up with someone for Steve not too long ago... there have been suggestions of Tom Cruise, but I'm sure someone much more suitable has also been mentioned...

But of course.

For those really dangerous jobs, like crossing the office to remove certain articles featuring certain entertainers from certain bulletin boards.

And we did come up with someone for Steve not too long ago... there have been suggestions of Tom Cruise, but I'm sure someone much more suitable has also been mentioned...

Steve: You...complete...me.
Kat: You had me from "Sort through these stomach contents."

I'll update the poll as suggestions come in.

Emily Watson is FAAAABULOUS! My favourite actress, actually. Amazingly talented. She's been in Breaking the waves, The boxer, Hilary and Jackie, Red Dragon, Punch drunk love, and others I can't remember right now. She hasn't done anything hugely mainstream, so its easy not to have heard of her.

Windsor Davies and Gillian Anderson.

Phil, who is Windsor Davies?

Steve, Johhny Depp would do you proud; he incarnated Hunter S. Thompson in Terry Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," Ed Wood in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" and a polymorphously perverse pirate in Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Carrribean."

I just hope the parts aren't taken by some irksome real-life couple eager to blur the work/home boundaries. Ford and Flockhart, Affleck and -Lo, I'm looking in your direction.

I've made a few adjustments to the poll, and removed my own bit of perversity, the Benigni & Paltrow pairing. Don't want to give Harvey Weinstein any ideas.

Headfoot,

Jackman, yes, yes, I can see it. I'm sure Steve would appreciate having integrated adamantium claws, especially during those grueling colossal squid necroscopies. No more heartbreak over dropped scalpels. As for Kidman, well...I can't easily imagine her elbow-deep in a sperm whale's lunch; then again, she has worked with Lars von Trier, which I hear is pretty much the same thing.

What happened here today?

Why can't Steve play Steve & Kat play Kat? Couldn't get any more real than that! Mind you, what makes you think that there's a story worth telling?

There's something we're going to try and do this year that'll knock your socks off. If we can pull this off then there's a story worth telling, but not a movie (a movie would have to have a sad ending). We'd have to achieve something pretty mighty to warrant a movie. Right now all I seem to do is spend an inordinate amount of time dreaming about what we could do ... if only .... If ...).

Isn't Roger Whittaker great! He'd have to feature in the movie ... along with Neil.

Off to buy Lotto ticket.

Have they made a movie about John Denver (probably a ton of documentaries). That's a life that would make a great movie.

That's a terrific Python album! Also includes a song who's title can't be posted here due to this being a family-friendly site (for the most part) that is fall-down funny. Plus the parody of All Things Bright and Beautiful that, if I recall, includes the line "each beastly little squid".

Back to the thread, how about Jude Law and Cate Blanchett, as they appear to be in every film currently being released anyway. Incidentally, how about a "Young Steve" adventure where he's portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe? The hair is similar at the moment...

Hmmmmmm. Let me count the ways we differ. 1, 2, 3, 4 .... 1,000,001, 1,000,002, 1,000,003 ..... 10,000,001, 10,000,002, 10,000,003.

And he's tall, has black hair, and is Brittish (is that with 1 t or 2?). British, Brittish. Hmmmm. Stephen Fry would know (so make that 10,000,004). He's a fantastic actor for sure, but not quite the right person for this cast.

I say we do the movie but crystal-ball gaze - make a movie based on hypotheticals 30 years down the track. That way we can get Lauren Bacal and Robert Redford doing it, and we could make it exciting, let our imaginations run wild, and at the same time, have a sad and fitting ending (O passes away; assuming the blood pressure, cholesterol & smokes don't get him earlier); TTF on the other hand will still be chasing GS when she's 120.
