Hello,

My name is Michael Andres and I now live in the Galveston area, and am attending Texas A & M at Galveston :boat:. I was wondering if the NRCC was looking for an intern or volunteer to do grunt work or anything else.

Please if anyone knows anything let me know. Thank you.

Michael

Oh and I saw this Emoticon :notworth: and thought of Dr. O'Shea and Dr. Roper. So again :notworth:

hey, I go to A&M Galveston too! I only just found out about the NRCC, though. There is an article about it here in TONMO. See it here:

Yeah, I would also love to find something useful to do there...
What year are you at TAMUG?

Hi y'all,

I think the NRCC does hire students, but I don't know the requirements or any details.

Why not send a private message to ceph (Dr. James Wood), who occasionaly posts on this website, and ask him how to apply? (Look under the Memberlist under "c" and find "ceph"). He was recently in California giving a lecture, and I don't know whether he's returned yet.

You could also look on the NRCC website.

Good luck!

I exchanged emails with him last week, he said he was off to "sail across the gulf -- fair winds"... :)

Howdy,

When I went to the web site for the NRCC I notice that Phillip G. Lee, Ph.D. was the center's director. Does that imply that he is the one who gets the e-mail or should I still send it to Dr. Wood despite his absence? I have tried to contact both in the past to no avail. But I guess "if first you don't succeed, try, try, try again."

What got you interested in ceph's? And which ceph order is your favorite?

oh i've always had an interest in cephs. It started out with devouring any and all information about giant squids. And grew from there when I started reading into octopuses. I can't say which I'm more interested, octos, squid or cuttles. (and then there's nautilus and argonauts..... can't forget them)

but if i'm pressed to pick favorites...i guess they're in that order i listed them.

That’s cool. I got into cephs at an early age and my fascination started with Architeuthis as well. As a general rule of thumb I prefer squids but because I'm working with Dr. Roland Anderson on a octopus growth paper and my favorite species of ceph (at the moment of course) is the Tremoctopus violaceus (the Violent Blanket Octopus) I may have to rethink the squid thing.

I almost forgot to include Ocythoe tuberculata (the Football Octopus) they are interesting as well.

say....speaking of A&M galveston....You should join the Sailing Team. it's great fun and we'll teach you everything you need to know about sailing.

Is it a requirement to have sailed before? If so I haven't.

the only requirement is for you to know how to swim. and you might want some sandals that will stay on your feet (not flip-flops). we practice every week day from 3:30 until 6, but no one can ever make it five days a week. Most people do 2 or 3 days a week.

Is the sport like a year-round thing or is it seasonal?

it's an all-year sort of thing. we just put on more clothes during the winter.

So when would I sign up? Do you recruit at the New Student Confrence or during the year. My other problem is that I currently live in North Houston and have to commute every day to TAMUG, do you think this puts a kink in me trying out for the sail team?

oh wow....houston... no dorm-living for you? My roommate lives about the same distance as you from galveston, but she's lived on campus every year (of course, she's in the Corps so she is required to live on campus). But if you do live close enough it does make it quite a bit cheaper not to have to pay for housing and meals on campus. Well, depending on how many hours you're taking, you might just find it easier to make just one trip from home to school and one back when all classes/activities are over with for the day. You can use the time in between classes in the library or in the dorm room of a friend to study or just hang out.

oh you'll see a group of sailing team member recruiting at some time or another. you can't miss them actually.

I planned on only making a couple trips a day. I wasn't able to get a dorm on campus and so my mom is like just stay with me, it'll be less than getting your own place. I don't know about that it's probably going to cost about $270 a month for gas. So I guess we'll see.

Just a note, I believe that James Wood will be incummunicado for a while, as his ship ran into some difficulties on his trip to Bermuda.

Hi Colin,

I don't think it was the hurricane, altho I think it has been stormy; their engine died while they were sailing and they had to get it repaired. Last I heard they were on a waiting list to get the motor repaired in pensacola.

Hi Colin,

Well, James landed in Key West. Dunno if he'll be in communication soon or if he's travelling on to his new lab in Bermuda yet, but with that hurricane coming in now, who knows?
