So, I'm the ceph expert now, apparently...in an aquarium. Also, argonauts.

Argonauts!

So apparently, one of the staff members at the aquarium I work at regularly goes out fishing and sometimes trawling to look for new specimens. He showed me this funny shell and said "I wonder what kind of snail uses this kind of shell, it looks pretty thin."

I took a look and was suprised, it was an argonaut shell. I've asked about it and apparently, he had a whole bunch of them from the same trawl (he said they probably traveled in schools (groups?) A few of them were kept at the aquarium for several days before they died.

So me and the rest of the guys were wondering, how long do they generally live? Do they require any special needs like a squid does (i.e circular tank, dim lights, tank should reach a particular size/height...etc.)

    Yikes Eric,

You are so lucky... There was a member that had kept them (in Southern California), I will try and remember who he was...

Here's another question off the top of my head, anyone know what species would be common near Hong Kong?

If I remember right, it only lived a short time and aquarium success is zero, looking for the reference now (I think it was marinebio_guy while he was in CA).

Here is one of the discussions I found on Nautilus

Here is a reference I found on Argonauts but it just references the paper he wrote but we don't seem to have it posted in articles. Here is his journal about catching and keeping an argonaut.

The telling line about the short life span in aquaria is this one:

She passed away last week. She lived for 17 days which might be a new record for being held in captivity. I'm not sure why she died she was doing fine and eating but then one day she was not able to stay neutrally bouyant and just laid on the bottom of the tank and died 2 days later. It was awsome being able to have one even if it was for a short time. Maybe I will find another one someday.

You can look into the aquarium in Hawaii. I heard that they used to do a lot of work with argonauts. Not sure if you will get much info out of them but it's worth a shot.
